New Gadgets: Digital Golf Glove, Android Tablets

Yes, Apple has sold more than 5 million iPhones in the last two weeks (despite publicly acknowledging the deep flaws in its new maps app), but it isn't the only company releasing products and preparing for the holiday buying season ahead. From new Android tablets from Lenovo and Barnes & Noble to some unique gadgets, including a golf glove with a built in computer, the selection this week ranges from the downright practical to the extremely unique.

Golf gadgets are nothing new, but golf gloves with a built-in computer? Well, that's a first. SensoSoultions announced this week its SensoGlove, a golf glove with sensors that tells you if you are holding the club wrong. The little computer inside lets you set the pressure and warns you if you have swing too hard or not hard enough. The $89 glove comes for both the right and left hand and in men and womens sizes. ($89.00, SensoSoultions)

There are a number of mobile hotspots on the market (small devices that broadcast an LTE or 3G signal so you can connect to the Internet when there's no WiFi network nearby). But the new Liberate is the first to come with a 2.8-inch touchscreen. Made by Novatel Wireless, the Liberate allows you connect up to 10 WiFi devices to it to use AT&T's LTE network. AT&T says it will last 11 hours on a charge, but isn't sharing pricing or availability yet. (N/A, AT&T)

Barnes & Noble Nook HD and HD+

Barnes & Noble had no problem reminding everyone this week that its new Nook HD and HD+ tablets beat the other 7-inch, affordable Android tablets. The Nook HD, as Barnes & Noble says, is the lightest, high-resolution 7-inch tablet on the market. It has a 1440 x 900-resolution display, which it says is optimized for reading HD magazines and watching HD videos through the new Nook Video service. There's also a 9-inch version that weighs 652 grams. Both tablets run a redesigned version of Android 4.0 and have dual-core processors. We've got more info and a video on them here. (Starts at $199, Barnes & Noble)

But while Barnes & Nobles tablets are focused on consuming content -- reading, watching movies, etc. -- Lenovo's new IdeaTab S2110 is about creating. Well, at least if you snatch up the optional keyboard dock. The $399 tablet has an 10.1-inch screen, two cameras, and even an FM radio, but add on the $100 keyboard dock and you can write long documents and get double the battery life. ($399, Lenovo)

No, there isn't a bottle of champagne in there. The Libratone Zipp is a circular speaker, and not just any speaker: it's an Airplay enabled wireless speaker that can connect to any AirPlay-enabled Apple device. The company claims that the wireless connection allows for better streaming sound quality than Bluetooth, but there's also a wired audio option. The speaker does cost a pricey $399, but with dual tweeters and 360-degree sound, price equals big sound. ($399, Libratone)

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Bubba Watson wasted no time revving up Ryder Cup fans, booming a drive past the Europeans and walking off the first tee slapping every hand he could.

The Americans want to pad their 5-3 lead, and are counting on Watson and Webb Simpson for another quick start. Watson and Simpson, whose 5-and-4 blitz in Friday afternoon's match sparked a U.S. run, face Justin Rose and Ian Poulter, who holds the European record for winning percentage in the Ryder Cup with a 9-3-0 record.

Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson, Friday's stars after taking down Europe's two best teams, face another stiff test in Lee Westwood and Luke Donald. Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson play Sergio Garcia and Nicolas Colsaerts, the rookie who single-handedly kept Europe from being swept in fourballs with an eagle and eight birdies. Brandt Snedeker and Jim Furyk get another crack at Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.

30 years ago, the CD started the digital music revolution

7 hrs.

The digital music revolution officially hit 30 years ago, on Oct. 1, 1982. While you may be surprised to learn?that the heralds of the coming age were, in fact, the Bee Gees, it probably comes as less of a shock to learn that Sony was at the very heart of it. After years of?research and an?intense period of?collaboration with Philips, Sony shipped the world's first CD player, the CDP-101. Music???and how we listen to it???would never be the same.

Today the CD player might be seen as something of a relic, since our smartphones, iPods and satellite radios provide seamless access to not only our entire music libraries, but to nearly every artist or track available. We can dictate any song or album to an app and have it playing in seconds, or download a new single by visiting an artist's Facebook page.

In such a world, the idea of carrying around a disc loaded with just 10 or 12 tracks and switching it out every hour sounds positively stone-age.?But the MP3 and streaming media are not just the CD's replacements, but its descendants. The future of music in fact made its unofficial debut, believe it or not, in the hands of the Bee Gees.

It was on the BBC show Tomorrow's World in 1981?that the Bee Gees publicly?demonstrated CD technology (and a new album, Living Eyes) for the first time. Artists were excited about the format ? the prospect of a high-quality, track-separated, non-degrading medium was enticing, though many were still skeptical of digital encoding. But music industry heavies like David Bowie and renowned conductor Herbert von Karajan were quick to embrace it, and soon the likes of Dire Straits would hit a million sales and cement the CD's position?as the new standard for music.

That triumph was a long time coming: development of the format began in the '70s, when both Sony and Philips were independently doing research on an digital,?optical disc format to replace cassette tapes and records. Early work at Sony was led by Norio Ohga, who bravely bore the skepticism of his comrades in order to create and demonstrate the earliest versions in 1976 and 1978.

Meanwhile, Philips was on the same track, so to speak. Their original version, an evolution of the laserdisc, was a whopping 20cm in diameter, but after reflection they brought the size of their prototype down to 11.5cm ? the same size, measured diagonally, as a cassette tape.

In 1979, the two companies decided to work together. They set up a task force of less than a dozen people ? engineers who didn't know if they could trust each other. After breaking the ice, however, the team worked for a year and?managed to arrive at a set of standards, called the "Red Book." The manufacturing process and method of encoding were contributed by Philips, while Sony created the digital error-correction that made reading the data reliable.

The new technology was privately inaugurated in 1980, and the first modern CD pressed was Richard Strauss's "Alpine Symphony." The next year, the Bee Gees went on the BBC, and the year after that the CD as we know it today was born.

That October of 1982, the CDP-101 made its debut in Japan alongside the first run of CD albums, led by Billy Joel's 52nd Street. The device was expensive: ?168,000, ?about $730 at the time, or almost twice that when adjusted for inflation. But home audio wasn't cheap then, and there was a market eager to snap up the new, high-fidelity audio format.

The engineers behind it?had really had a task: everything about the system was brand new. As Jacques Heemskerk, one of the senior Philips engineers on the project, told the BBC in 2007:

It was revolutionary in many fields???the optics were new, the disc was new. At the start of development there wasn't even a laser that would work well enough for our needs.?The most advanced laser at the time had a lifespan of only 100 hours.

So the cost was justified by the complexity and novelty of the hardware. Other manufacturers, like Toshiba, Kenwood, and of course Philips, would produce variant CD players over the course of the next year.?

The first CDs to market, with the notable exception of Billy Joel, were mostly classical. In fact, the capacity of the CD was raised during development from 60 to 74 minutes in order to accommodate Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The creators of the format knew that classical music lovers were more likely to appreciate (and more likely?to pay for) the increased quality of the CD system.?

The pop and rock market, however, was still in love with cassettes, which were more portable and more ubiquitous than ever. 1979 had brought the first Walkman, and cassette players were now standard equipment in car radios. The CD was, for the moment, strictly for the home, where your nice speakers and amp would make the improved fidelity sing. Even there, to this day, some audiophiles swear by vinyl records and an all-analog setup.

It wasn't until later in the '80s that things really took off. Dire Straits'?Brothers In Arms?sold a million CDs in 1985, suggesting that the format had finally hit its stride. It wasn't long before other artists were selling millions upon millions of their albums in CD format. The Discman, introduced in 1984, and the CD-ROM format, enabling computers to read the discs, further accelerated uptake.

The rest, as they say, is history. Since that time, hundreds of billions of CDs have been shipped and sold ? the numbers are near-impossible to track, since the easily duplicated?digital data led to an enormous increase in piracy and counterfeiting, not to mention the billions of copies and mix-CDs made by normal users.

Music CDs?peaked in 2000 with global sales estimated?at around 2.5 ?billion. Soon (legal) digital downloads began to replace physical media for many music buyers. Though its numbers are on the decline,?CDs are still produced today on the order of hundreds of millions, and it will be many years yet before the world's CD factories shut their doors.

The size and shape of the CD, as well as its capacity, portability, and versatility, have been a major factor in how music has been developed and consumed for decades. Albums were written to fill it, new formats like the DVD were made in imitation of it, and entire new trends in media resulted from it. The Compact Disc started the digital revolution for music in the '70s, and we're still feeling the effects.

Dr. Claire McCarthy is a primary care physician and the Medical Communications Editor at Boston Children?s Hospital. Along with her blogs here on Thriving, you can find her at the Huffington Post and Boston.com. Follow her on Twitter @drClaire.

If we really want to decrease childhood obesity, do you know what we need to do?

Fight parental obesity.

I?m serious. We?ve known for a while that what puts a child at biggest risk of being obese is having an obese parent, and just recently a study was released that said the same thing. Having an obese parent is a bigger risk factor than watching tons of TV or having a bad diet or never exercising. If we could get parents to a better weight, the researchers said, we could cut childhood obesity in half.

That?s why ads like the ones from Minnesota make sense:

They are short and worth watching, but in case you don?t have time: basically, overweight parents have embarrassing ?aha? moments, realizing that their (overweight) children are imitating their unhealthy habits (buying junk food and eating huge quantities of unhealthy foods). ?Today is the day we set a better example for our kids,? says the tagline.

These aren?t perfect ads. I get that. The biggest reason is that they shame people, and that?s not a nice thing to do. That?s why a lot of us were really uncomfortable with the Georgia ads that featured obese kids with taglines like ?It?s hard to be a little girl when you?re not.? Shaming kids crossed a line. But shaming parents?well, that may be necessary.

Critics say that fat doesn?t necessarily equal unhealthy, and I suppose that?s true. If you are overweight but exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, you could very possibly be healthier than a skinny couch potato who lives on Doritos. But in general, being overweight is not good for you. It raises your risk of heart disease (a lot), diabetes, cancer, orthopedic problems, mental health problems and even economic problems. It?s certainly not something we strive for?or want for our children.

And while there are certainly overweight people who eat healthfully, the parents in the ads didn?t. That?s who the ads are targeting: parents who really do need to take a hard look at what they are putting in the grocery cart or on the dinner table. Yes, we need campaigns that are aimed at encouraging healthy habits; the fun Blue Cross Blue Shield ?Do Groove? video does just that, encouraging people to get moving. (I keep hoping to see people dancing in waiting rooms like the guy in the video, but it hasn?t happened yet). But as someone who spends a lot of time talking in detail with families about what they eat, I think we need more of those ?aha? moments. Since talking until I?m blue in the face isn?t helping, maybe shaming people (grownups, not kids) is what we need to try next.

It?s also true that we?ll never conquer the obesity epidemic if we don?t face some hard truths about grain subsidies and other economic (and marketing) factors that are contributing to it. Everyone should be able to afford healthy food?and have access to safe and affordable exercise options. There are real social justice issues here, and we need a groundswell of indignation and action.

But we can?t waste time waiting for the perfect ad, the perfect approach that changes behavior without offending anyone. Lives are in danger, and things aren?t getting any better. Just yesterday I was reading about how the military is getting involved in the fight against childhood obesity, because one in four Americans weighs too much for military service (makes me wonder if this is some sort of silver lining?obesity could end up forcing peace). The implications for the future health of our children, and of our society and our economy, are staggering.

We aren?t going to get anywhere in the fight against childhood obesity if we don?t deal with the biggest risk factor. To me, it?s worth hurting some feelings if we save some lives.

Begin Your Internet Marketing Adventure With These Amazing Tips ...

Begin Your Internet Marketing Adventure With These
Amazing Tips

Every so often, the perfect business opportunity comes to mind. Thankfully, the Internet is a
highly effective channel through which you can market your business in order to help it grow.
The following techniques will help you use Internet marketing to its full advantage.

Always make sure your webpages are informative and contain relevant information. If your
website is a single page, only showing hours and an address, you will not see much traffic.
For instance, you can allow your customers to read various product reviews written by real
customers, or articles explaining your business and your product. Your goal should be to
inform people, not only to sell them on a product.

Thinking Outside The Box With Internet Marketing How To Market On The Internet Like An
Expert Customers in today's world aren't that gullible. Most are looking for some type of
authority figure to give them the gist of the product before they entertain purchasing it. If you
are the boss of your company, let people know! A label such as President or CEO is a great
way to let people know that you are the one in charge.

Internet marketing can help promote your small business, but make sure you fully understand
and pay attention to the the types of information you provide to consumers. Strive to make
your content valuable and unique. You need to keep good information on your site so that
people can stay updated.

When you do not regularly update or revamp your website, consider keeping things fresh
with a company blog. Feeding the search engines original content is key. Without it, your site
will drop in the rankings. With a blog, you can add fresh and exciting content as often as you
wish without affecting the business page at all.

Invaluable Internet Marketing Tips For Your Business One online marketing strategy is
encouraging your visitors to purchase your product by offering discounted prices. You can
display both the original and sale price to show your customer the deal. People will be more
likely to order your products if they feel like they are getting a good deal.

Don't put the cart before the horse when it comes to SEO. A good site drives good rankings,
not the other way around. All online businesses should begin with this idea. Making your site
look good and operate well from the beginning means less work as time goes on to re-do or
fix mistakes.

Avoid spamming whenever you can. Although it can be cost efficient to spam sites with your
information, it always ends up drawing negative feedback towards you site and it never ends
well. If you do not add some sort of personal touches to your advertising, your potential
customers could be turned off by your generic messages.

Split your website into sections, and have a map from which people can choose the products
they'd like to see. You should always keep your website structured no matter how different
your content is.

One method for getting new customers is setting up a landing page that allows users to opt-
in. This will encourage visitors to enter their email addresses. To help get visitors to give their
email offer a free item. This service will help both you and the visitor.

Creating videos that go viral can generate an enormous amount of traffic for your website.
Viral videos can be difficult to create, but when you strike it big you're looking at view counts
in the thousands or millions. If you accomplish this task correctly, you will have a huge impact
on your sales compared to using any other campaign strategy.

You have just learned about strategies that will dramatically improve many aspects of an
internet business. Now you should apply them to see how well they'll work for you. Do not be
afraid to make adjustments, and tailor them to your business. Do not be afraid of trying new
things when you are going about it.

Former Olympus executives plead guilty in accounting fraud trial

Former Olympus executives plead guilty in accounting fraud trial

Three executives from troubled imaging giant Olympus have pleaded guilty to artificially boosting the company's true value in 2007 and 2008 by concealing losses in financial statements. Former chairman Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, ex-auditor Hideo Yamada and former VP Hisashi Mori were charged with fraud in the scandal, which was brought to light last year by ex-CEO Michael Woodford. He was fired by the Olympus board for blowing the whistle, but reportedly received a large settlement for his troubles. The company has since confessed to cooking the books as far back as the '90s to hide investment losses, and revealed in 2011 that it had a billion dollars less in value than previously stated. That, along with the poor performance of its camera division, has forced Olympus to seek a partner or raise capital to survive.

Economists: Real Estate Prices To Increase 15.2% Through 2016 ...

A new survey of 113 real estate economists, experts, and investment strategists shows a growing confidence in the long-term prospects of home prices in the real estate market. ?Added to the most recent Case-Shiller Home Price Index, showing home prices up 1.2 percent nationally compared to one year ago, the gradual appreciation of real estate prices is looking more and more likely.

The study was put on by Pulsenomics and reported by Inman News this week. ?These same economic experts had forecast flat or slightly decreased prices over the past year, but have shown increasing bullish attitudes on home prices as more market statistics support that position.

The economists? current forecasts (these are cumulative increases over the years, not yearly increases):

2012: ?2.3 percent increase

2013: ?4.7 percent increase

2014: 8 percent increase

2015: 11.4 percent increase

2016: 15.2 percent increase

From the Inman article:

This quarter?s survey results show optimism has increased among the participants, who in the second quarter had predicted a 0.4 percent dip in home prices this year, followed by modest increases starting in 2013 and through 2016.

Economists now forecast home prices will rise 2.3 percent in 2012 from fourth-quarter 2011, and see further cumulative rises of 4.7 percent in 2013, 8 percent in 2014, 11.4 percent in 2015, and 15.2 percent in 2016.

That?s an expected annual growth rate of 2.9 percent between 2012 and 2016, slightly under the 3.6 percent annual growth rate experienced in the prebubble years between 1987 and 1999.

The most pessimistic quartile of survey respondents expect home prices to rise 0.3 percent this year; the most optimistic, 4.4 percent.

Squeeze light 'till it hurts' on a quantum scale: Researchers push the boundaries on ultra-precise measurement

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? An international team of physicists has pushed the boundaries on ultra-precise measurement by harnessing quantum light waves in a new way.

It is one thing to be able to measure spectacularly small distances using "squeezed" light, but it is now possible to do this even while the target is moving around.

An Australian-Japanese research collaboration made the breakthrough in an experiment conducted at the University of Tokyo, the results of which have been published in an article, "Quantum-enhanced optical phase tracking" in the journal Science.

Leader of the international theoretical team Professor Howard Wiseman, from Griffith University's Centre for Quantum Dynamics (pictured), said this more precise technique for motion tracking will have many applications in a world which is constantly seeking smaller, better and faster technology.

"At the heart of all scientific endeavour is the necessity to be able to measure things precisely," Professor Wiseman said.

"Because the phase of a light beam changes whenever it passes through or bounces off an object, being able to measure that change is a very powerful tool."

"By using squeezed light we have broken the standard limits for precision phase tracking, making a fundamental contribution to science," he said. "But we have also shown that too much squeezing can actually hurt."

Dr Dominic Berry from Macquarie University has been collaborating with Professor Wiseman on the theory of this problem for many years.

"The key to this experiment has been to combine "phase squeezing" of light waves with feedback control to track a moving phase better than previously possible," Dr Berry said.

"Ultra-precise quantum-enhanced measurement has been done before, but only with very small phase changes. Now we have shown we can track large phase changes as well," he said.

Professor Elanor Huntington from UNSW Canberra, who directed the Australian experimental contribution, is a colleague of Professor Wiseman in the Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology.

"By using quantum states of light we made a more precise measurement than is possible through the conventional techniques using laser beams of the same intensity," Professor Huntington said.

"Curiously, we found that it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Squeezing beyond a certain point actually degrades the performance of the measurement, making it less precise than if we had used light with no squeezing."

Vizualized Bay Area bids adieu to Space Shuttle Endeavour

NASA and the US government may have moved on from the shuttle program, but it's clear that the American people are still in love with our nation's cosmic cargo planes. An estimated 20,000 people showed up at the Ames Research Center/Moffet Air Force Base in Mountain View, California this morning to see Endeavour buzz the tower. With so many folks itchin' to see Endeavour's farewell tour firsthand, the line to get in was lengthy, but we braved the crowds to bring you some shots of the action. Enjoy.

[Thanks to Chris Williams for helping with some of the crowd shots]

Update: Canon/RED guru and LA-based DP Vincent Laforet caught the shuttle's final approach and landing at LAX. You'll find the slow-motion clip, shot at 5K resolution on a RED Epic at 96 frames-per-second with an 800mm Canon f/5.6 lens, just past the break.

I Review and Ramp-up All My Advertising

In the online business world, traffic levels are all over the place
on the weekends, Friday Nights can be low, Saturdays are decent,
Sundays are quiet, but then a significant increase Sunday PM.

One thing I have noticed on weekends, regardless of traffic levels,
many newcomers (by the thousands) are searching, discovering,
and entering the online advertising and business world.

If you are building an online business, promoting and selling
anything online, newcomers entering is always a good thing.

Plant seeds, reach out, connect and engage, you will soon reap.

By the way, the Worldwide Internet continues to grow at
hyper-frenzy-hoopla pace. If your online business is not growing
and thriving, it is certainly NOT because of a lack of fish out there.

The oceans are massive, full of fish and growing, get into a daily
routine, go fishing, just do it, soon your net will be overflowing.

And this is what Your Traffic Hoopla is all about, the Business of
Online Advertising. View Your Traffic Hoopla as your intro and
guide to current best advertising resources. Join and use each to
promote Your Business and Your Traffic Hoopla.

No Love for Romney or Science Fiction

151670260 Salman Rushdie

Photograph by Jemal Countess/Getty Images.

Salman Rushdie cites a wide range of literary influences on his writing, from The Arabian Nights to the fiction of Philip Roth, Saul Bellow, and Bernard Malamud. But one genre he says he has little appetite for is science fiction.?

Rushdie sat down recently with Slate?s Jacob Weisberg for a wide-ranging interview in advance of the arrival of his latest book Joseph Anton: A Memoir. During their conversation, the British-Indian author answered a series of Slate reader questions, offering his take on the 2012 presidential race, tips for young writers, and a reflection on how he came to be a nonbeliever.

You can watch Part 1 of the interview, in which Rushdie explains why he wrote his memoir in the third person. In the second segment, he discusses how he survived a decade of living under threat of death, after a fatwa was issued by Iran?s Ayatollah Khomeini in the wake of publication of The Satanic Verses.

>> i got encouraged to always reach for the water, have it right by me.

>> reporter: after the year, the kids getting the non-calorie drinks gained four pounds on average, than those not getting it. the study concentrates on the emerging understanding on how some people are disposed to putting on weight.
