SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Police interviewed witnesses and looked for suspects Sunday after two men were shot and wounded following a San Francisco 49ers-Oakland Raiders preseason game, while the NFL and the mayors of the two cities jointly called for an end to "intimidation" and acts of violence at sporting events.
Saturday night's shooting in the parking lot at Candlestick Park evoked memories of another recent disturbing act of post-game violence involving two rival California pro sports teams ? the near-fatal beating this spring of a San Francisco Giants fan outside Dodger Stadium.
In Saturday's attacks, a 24-year-old man, who reportedly was wearing a "F--- the Niners" T-shirt, remained hospitalized in serious condition Sunday after being shot several times in the stomach. He managed to stumble to Candlestick Park stadium security for help despite the severe injuries, police said.
A second victim, a 20-year-old man, was treated for less serious wounds in a separate shooting, also after the game.
Sgt. Mike Andraychak said no arrests have been made and that police are looking for "a person of interest" connected to at least one of the shootings. He would not specify which shooting.
A motive for either attack ? including whether either was influenced by emotions surrounding a game involving fiercely rival teams ? also wasn't known.
Apart from the shootings, a third victim, a 26-year-old man, was also hospitalized in serious condition Sunday after he was knocked unconscious in a stadium bathroom during the game. That attack appeared unrelated to the other two, police said.
The victims' names have not been released as the violent spree overshadowed the 49ers' 17-3 victory over the Raiders.
The crimes prompted San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan to issue a joint statement saying that violence at stadiums in both cities will not be tolerated.
"The incidents ... are completely unacceptable and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," the mayors said. "Fans come to our stadiums to enjoy an afternoon of football, not to be subjected to intimidation or violence. These games are family events and the types of images we witnessed last night have no place in our arenas."
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello echoed similar comments, saying "we deplore the activities of a handful of fans at last night's game and pledge our full support to Mayors Lee and Quan and to state and local law enforcement agencies."
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who once was a coach in the Raiders organization, said he was saddened to hear about the violence.
"I didn't know anything was going on during the game. I wasn't aware of that," Harbaugh said. "I feel bad for the people who got injured and the people who had to see that, for those who had to witness it."
The team said that "these kinds of events are disquieting to everyone in the Bay Area community. We are working to assist the San Francisco Police Department in any way possible to understand how and why this happened."
Raiders CEO Amy Trask said in a statement that "the incidents at last night's game are not acceptable to the Raiders or to any National Football League team and our thoughts are with all affected."
Head Coach Hue Jackson also shared his desire for a safe fan-friendly environment "where we wish that people come out and enjoy a game and hopefully that those things don't happen."
On Saturday, Sgt. Frank Harrell said the man shot wearing the T-shirt drove his truck to a gate and stumbled to stadium security. A second man shot before that in the parking lot and had superficial face injuries, Harrell said.
He said the two shootings were being treated separately "but we believe they are related."
The attacks come nearly five months after San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow was severely beaten by two men in Los Angeles Dodgers gear outside Dodger Stadium after the archrivals' season opener in Los Angeles. Two men charged in the beating, Louie Sanchez, 28, and Marvin Norwood, 30, have pleaded not guilty.
Stow, 42, a Santa Cruz paramedic, suffered severe brain injuries and remains hospitalized in serious condition.
That attack drew widespread attention and focusing the spotlight on security at Dodger Stadium, and the intense rivalry among Dodgers and Giants fans.
Christian End, an assistant professor at Xavier University in Cincinnati, who specializes in sports fan behavior, said there are several factors for unruliness at sporting events ? including the magnitude of the game, if it is between arch rivals, adrenaline and alcohol. There's also "deindividuation," when fans supporting a particular team adopt a group mentality and may become uncivil.
"The anonymity of large crowds can afford some fans the opportunity to act in a way that they typically wouldn't because there's less accountability and less fear of repercussion," End said.
End said violence between fans of opposing teams can typically begin with light banter, followed by "one-upping" each other with statistics or other chatter that could draw a crowd.
"Then it could be taken up a notch where the fun aspect is gone and it just escalates," End said.
End said he doesn't believe fan violence has increased in the last 10 years but may appear that way partially due to new technology at hand.
"There are more cameras covering games and more fans using their smartphones," End said. "Any acts of aggression have a higher probability of being captured and being shown over the Internet and on television.
"It would give the impression that, 'Boy, fans are engaging in all of this aggressive behavior.' But you have to remember that a vast majority of them are not."

How to Pick the Best Email Marketing Software
Before you start down this potentially thorny path, figure out exactly what you want out of your email marketing campaign.
Instructions
1
So, you?re on the edge of starting an email marketing strategy but are completely overwhelmed by the software choices out there. Which is the best? Which is the best for you?
We?re here to help and walk you through the most important, most critical criteria to consider before signing your life away to an email marketing software company.
Goal Setting
Before you start down this potentially thorny path, figure out exactly what you want out of your email marketing campaign.
Always start with the mission of your business. What do you do? What do you provide? What kind of experience you want your future subscribers to have?
So, without further ado, here are some questions to ask yourself before choosing an email marketing software:
What do you want to achieve out of the email blast?
Where do you want to drive traffic to? Website? Physical store location? Social media sites?
Do you want to inform your subscribers about industry trends and news?
Do you want to use the email blast as a way to announce new products?
How about offering promotions, discounts or coupons?
Do you want to have to ability to receive subscriber feedback through surveys?
Ultimately, also consider how an email marketing campaign will affect your bottom line.
Will it increase sales? What are you hoping to achieve? Do you want to raise brand awareness, grow your customer base or reach new markets?
Best Practice
?
Essentially, lay out clearly and thoroughly what you want out of your email marketing software even before looking. This will help you make an informed decision while supporting your business.
Okay, all that is covered, let?s move on to what to really look for in email marketing software. As with anything business-related, put your potential vendor through the paces.
Criteria 1: Is it easy to use?
?
Time is valuable. Your time is valuable.
Ensure that whomever in your business ultimately uses the new software is easy and doesn?t chew up their time.
Best Practice
Email marketing software systems aren?t meant to be clumsy. Get in and get out as fast and effectively as possible.
?
Criteria 2: Can you customize it?
?
Are there standard email design templates? What about a function that allows you to create
Some businesses may one need, and quite frankly, want a standard email design template to work with.
But not having the option to customize templates is a big no-no.
Even if you don?t use it immediately, having the option down the road to customize is incredibly valuable.
Best Practice
?
After you?ve selected your email marketing software, take the time to customize. Design your email marketing campaign to reflect your business. Since, if this is your first foray into the awesome world of email marketing, then start off with a bang and on the right foot.
Criteria 3: What is the cost?
Is there a flat rate, say, for monthly or yearly use? Is the price depended upon the number of subscribers in your list? Are you able to create a plan that works for your bottom line?
Is there a clear upgrade system that is laid out and understandable?
Use the example of mobile phone carriers: many customers are shocked when they open their bills because of all the hidden charges. The best email marketing software companies lay out all of the costs upfront rather than playing hide-in-seek.
Best Practice
?
Figure out internally how much of your overall marketing budget is allocated to email marketing. Keep in mind, industry insiders are saying that for 2011, budgets are increasing from email marketing campaigns because of their incredible return on investment, effectiveness and total value.
?
Criteria 4: How is it managed?
?
How easy is it to access your account? Can you change or update your email marketing campaign on the fly?
Is there any oversight from the email marketing software company into your account?
Essentially, how easy is it to get in and out of your account?
Best Practice
?
Know that you?re in charge of your account. If you want to get into it at, say 3 AM, can you?
The next part of our series dives a bit deeper into the criteria to consider when comparing email software options.

UTG Partners with Mitel to Successfully Implement Unified Communications Solution for Definition 6
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 07, 2011
United Technology Group (UTG), a trusted provider of IT solutions in the Metro Atlanta area, recently partnered with Mitel, the leading provider of Unified Communications (UC) solutions, to streamline internal telecommunications for Definition 6, a unified marketing agency, with an internet-based phone system connecting offices in NY and Atlanta more efficiently. This system implementation was rolled out during the first half of 2011 and serves as the initial phase of a fully managed voice solution project by UTG for Definition 6.
Definition 6 faced a telecommunications hurdle after it acquired its New York office, which consisted of a PR agency and video/post production company. The company struggled with two separate phone systems that were expensive, incompatible and antiquated, making it difficult to bridge the communication between its employees in both NY and Atlanta offices. The phone systems were also highly susceptible to frequent outages, and were unable to even transfer calls or messages between offices.
In order to correct this problem, Definition 6 selected UTG as their trusted IT partner to provide an advanced, modern voice solution. UTG in turn partnered with Mitel to develop a turnkey strategy for addressing Definition 6’s short-term communication issues, while providing a long-term platform for future growth. Through the smooth implementation of the flexible Mitel 3300MXE controller and a new MPLS data network, the agency now boasts a seamlessly integrated voice system that provides all the functionality necessary to maximize collaboration between the two offices.
Additional flexibility within the voice solution includes both Mitel’s Nupoint Messenger IP and Mitel Border Gateway, which are plug & play programs that fully enhance productivity with mobile and remote employees.
“We required a voice solution that unified our offices, was cost effective and was fully managed outside of our hosting infrastructure that we protect and maintain for our client hosted solutions and video content,” said Jeff Katz, President and Chief Operating Officer of Definition 6. “UTG has professionally addressed all of our short-term voice issues and paved the way for the future expansion we anticipate with our company.”

The amount of myths about weight loss is actually staggering and some are more stupid than others. The problem is that if you actually believe these myths and put them into practice you may have a really hard time losing weight. As you read through this article you will find many of the myths that are just not true.
Exercise will melt away the calories so it actually does not matter what you consume. This is not really accurate. Everyone is aware that physical exercise is an important part of weight reduction but you must understand that what you eat is also. When you eat to many calories or even sugars you will not have the ability to burn it off with physical exercise. You have to continue working out but you also need to be cautious of how much and what kinds of foods you eat.
Cutting out carbs out of your diet plan will help you slim down faster. This is an additional bogus statement. You can consume proteins, fat and of course you may also eat carbohydrates. Just what will matter is the total calories which you eat every day. This really is easy mathematics, when you eat a lesser amount of calories than you?ll be able to burn them off quicker, however if you consume more calories than you burn off you will end up gaining bodyweight. If you cut out all of your carbs the only thing you will be consuming is various meats and eggs, and you definitely won?t be obtaining the nutrition you need. Attempt to take in fruit and vegetables as they are lower in calories and possess plenty of nutrients. When it involves consuming junk foods, you will discover that you will still be hungry and you?ll actually be adding on the calories.
Cut out just about all fat to get rid of bodyweight. This misconception pretty much will go along with the misconception previously mentioned. You have to cut back on your calories, where you receive these calories from does not make a difference. You will discover that fats help to produce hormones our bodies need and you will also discover that cutting out fat can make you somewhat moody. Consuming too little fat can make you unpleasant and you will not be very lively. Attempt to eat wholesome fats, like those found in avocados or even nuts, instead of unhealthy ones, found in junk food.
If your a smoker don?t quit when you?re trying to lose weight as you will gain weight instead. This is another very popular myth. While it is true that some people will gain weight, others don?t it just depends on the type of person you are and how your will power is. However you will find that there are some people who quit smoking that end up losing weight. While you will find that nicotine can boost your metabolism a little the effects are not even worth mentioning. If you want to quit smoking, then quit, but don?t let that effect the amount of calories you take in every day.
If you want to lose weight you need a lot of exercise. Another false statement. Any type of exercise burns calories no matter how hard or easy the exercise is. Taking a swim is a great way to burn calories or you can even burn calories by just taking a walk. A lot of exercise will help you to burn off more of the calories, but you will find that you can lose the weight with just a moderate amount of exercise.
To slim down consume just fat free meals. This is actually partly correct. Again you have to keep track of your calories and some fat free food items even have much more calories than other food items. Concentrate on the number of calories you eat, as these foods will have calories. Don?t forget fat free foods possess calories and feeding on too much of these food types will make you gain pounds.I have no idea where all these misconceptions came from but we merely went over a few, there are plenty more of these myths floating around. By consuming a lesser amount of calories than you burn off everyday is the perfect approach to take about losing weight.

SAN DIEGO ? With her thick, wavy gray hair and heavily lined face, Felicitas Gurrola defies the image of today's typical Mexican smuggler.
At 84, she directed a female-dominated ring that prosecutors say led 80 people a month to the Los Angeles area ? and she managed to hang on to the family-run smuggling business for more than 40 years when most mom-and-pop rings were driven out by increasingly violent men guiding illegal immigrants along perilous routes.
In an almost inaudible voice, the Spanish-speaking octogenarian pleaded guilty Friday to charges that she directed a smuggling organization that guided migrants across the heavily fortified U.S.-Mexico border by giving them imposter IDs to present to immigration authorities at the crossing in San Ysidro, Calif.
As an interpreter explained that she faces the maximum penalty of five years in prison, Gurrola stared ahead with a calm, almost expressionless face, glancing at the back of the tattooed Guatemalan man who stood in front of her on charges of sneaking into the United States, in a separate case. Her 56-year-old daughter, Hilda Moreno, and another woman in the ring also pleaded guilty to the charges. They face up to 15 years in prison, a stiffer sentence in part because of their younger age, defense attorneys said.
"Imagine being 85 years old and incarcerated for the first time," said Gurrola's attorney, Tom Matthews. "To say this is difficult for her is a gross understatement."
At his request, Judge Nita Stormes agreed to support keeping Gurrola jailed with Moreno so her daughter can help her. Matthews said he plans to ask at a Nov. 9 sentencing hearing for the judge to consider Gurrola's age and health issues, which include arthritis in her hands, elbows and knees, and gout.
The route Gurrola's ring used from Tijuana, Mexico, to San Diego is the busiest U.S. border crossing in the world. Matthews said she ran her business for four decades without hurting any of her clients ? unlike many of the traffickers who have left migrants stranded in the desert's searing heat or drawn them into fast-moving Rio Grande waters, where they have perished.
"She was not shoving them in car trunks or building compartments," he said. "This was a far cry from that. For what it counts, she passed them safely. Everyone involved had a chaperone and looked after them. Safety was always their concern. It was an old-school operation. She apparently ran it efficiently and safely and now she's paying the consequences. Even a short sentence will end up being a life sentence for her."
Under an agreement with prosecutors, the government will seek no more than three years and one month in prison, Matthews said.
When she began, Gurrola and her family were typical of other smugglers at the time.
Decades ago, Mexicans in small towns and villages who wanted to seek work in the United States often would hire a trusted family member or neighbor who had already been and who would agree to guide them for a small fee.
But mom-and-pop organizations have faded away with the dramatic increase in border security. Migrant smugglers started charging thousands of dollars in fees to pay for risking the journey through increasingly remote areas to avoid detection, and the illegal industry has become a booming, billion-dollar business attracting violent, organized crime networks ? and even drug cartels ? that muscled smaller competitors aside.
Despite all that, Gurrola continued to work, with the help of her daughter and others. She met migrants at Tijuana's Suites Royal Hotel where she would give the migrants immigration documents belonging to others and told them to memorize the information, according to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement affidavit. Her ring ? of almost all women ? would then take the migrants to a beauty salon to look more like the photos on the documents.
Guides accompanied them to the San Ysidro border crossing and then on commercial buses to the Los Angeles area, where they got paid in cash by the migrants' families, usually around $3,500 a person, according to an affidavit.
The organization handled between 60 and 80 migrants a month during peak times and between 40 and 60 a month during slower patches, the affidavit says. That amounts to monthly revenue of about $280,000 in peak times.
Gurrola, who lived in the San Diego suburb of Chula Vista, and 10 others, including her daughter, were charged in April with immigrant smuggling. Gurrola was earlier indicted for immigrant smuggling in 1982 but fled to Mexico, according to the affidavit. She boasted that she smuggled immigrants for more than 40 years in one wire intercept during the ICE investigation that began in 2009.
Debra Hartman, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in San Diego, and Daniel Zipp, the prosecutor handling the case, did not respond to messages seeking comment.
Gurrola's 51-year-old niece, Maria de Los Angeles Rios, flew in from Culiacan, Mexico, along with several other of her family members, many of them senior citizens, to attend Friday's hearing. An 81-year-old friend who declined to give her name said she was so nervous she almost forgot her pills, pulling out a bag of medicine from her purse.
Los Angeles Rios said her aunt is a caring, hard-working person who supported her family and was always there to listen. She said she does not believe the charges, saying Gurrola made her money renting houses in Tijuana.
"She's been an inspiration that at her age she still worked, while being there for her children, and had so much energy to do it all," Los Angeles Rios said. "I have always seen her as a great example of a complete woman."

The following is a guest post from Amanda of Not Just Cute:
As I?m putting the finishing touches on my ebook, How to Have Your Cake and Eat It, Too ? all about being a mother and pursuing your own passions ? I?m reposting some of my favorite posts from the archives! If you want to be notified when the ebook is ready, just submit your email address here.
All parents should homeschool their children.
What I just?wrote may surprise some people, particularly given the fact that I have taught in the public school system and have my own son registered to begin kindergarten this?fall at our local public school.? But I?ll still stand by it.
Let me?explain.
Many parents are very conscientious about the decision to?enroll their children in private,?public, charter, or home school. They consider factors such as school quality, child personality, family situation, and so on.? Different families arrive at different answers.? Some families even arrive at different answers for different children.? There isn?t one perfect answer for everyone.
And yet, every child should be homeschooled.
This doesn?t mean you need to?throw out?the furniture in your front room and replace it with a row of desks and a blackboard.? What I mean is that the choice to send your children to a school outside of the home does not absolve you of your responsibility as a parent to teach your children.
The home is not just the first place a child learns, but it is where a child learns to value learning.? Here are some ways you can convey to your child that you value education.
Even if you choose not to teach your children full-time yourself, you need to be involved in your child?s education. Know what?he?s learning and check for understanding.? Supplement if necessary.? Work as an advocate for your child and a partner with his teacher.
I know of a woman?who believes that teaching is the teacher?s job, and so she doesn?t spend ?her time? on ?that stuff?.? Even homework and reading, she feels, is not part of her job.? Not surprisingly, her son struggles incredibly at school.? She may think that she is giving more to her son by being the ?fun? mom, but if she was fully aware of what challenges she was choosing for her son, I can?t imagine she wouldn?t change her ways.
No school can address your child?s every need. I often talk about the ?whole child? a common term?used in educational and developmental literature.? It refers to the education of not just the cognitive aspects of a child, but also the creative, and physical, and so on.? And yet, you will not likely find much spiritual education in a public school.??Spirituality is a part of the whole child, and shouldn?t be neglected.? In public schools, you will find character development, perhaps, but not real morals. References to religion, on occasion, but little on faith.? This is your job.? Tend to it intentionally.
Schools are also bound by numbers on a greater scale.? Number of children, numbers in budgets, numbers in legal liabilities.? You are able to zero in on your child?s passions and offer expansion and experiences a school can not. If you see that your daughter is fascinated by sea life, don?t wait for that marine biology unit to come along- go to the library, the aquarium, the beach!? Make dioramas and write your own books.? Teach your children that we learn because we want to, not because we have to!
I?ve had several friends ask me for my thoughts on homeschooling versus public schooling.? Each family must make their own choices.? But I tell my friends that for me, the choice is both.? I believe we must think of our homes as schools, or it will matter little what we?choose instead.
What choice have you made for your family? How do you embrace education at home outside of formally homeschooling

EDINBURGH, Scotland ? Royal Dutch Shell PLC said Thursday an operation is under way to stop the leak at its Gannet Alpha platform following the worst North Sea oil spill in more than a decade.
About 1,300 barrels of oil has spewed into the sea since a pipeline at Shell's Gannet Alpha platform was found to be leaking Aug. 12, the company said, though it claims that after shutting the well, only one barrel a day is leaking from the installation to control the build up of pressure in the pipeline.
The pipeline at the Gannet Alpha platform, around 110 miles (180 kilometers) east of Aberdeen, Scotland, still contains up to 660 tons, or 4,620 barrels, of crude oil and needs to be stabilized before it can be shut down.
In the first phase of the operation to shut down the leak, engineers have lowered five giant concrete "blankets" on to a stretch of pipeline to place it back on the seabed after it lifted 4 feet (1.2 meters) off the sea floor.
Work is ongoing to lay concrete blankets to secure the pipeline, Shell spokesman Steve Harris said.
"First, we have to make a risk assessment ... to make sure that we can find a safe way to shut it off," he told the BBC. "We expect the result of the risk assessment very quickly and then divers will go down 300 feet (90 meters) and turn off the remaining amount of oil that is leaking into the sea."
Harris added "work is going on so we can move to the second phase." No time-scale for a full shutdown was given.
Shell's director of exploration and production activities in Europe, Glen Cayley, asserted Thursday the company is "making good progress," but has not yet stopped the remaining leak. The leak is on a relief valve on the pipeline. The pipeline is a "flow line" that carries oil away from the well on the ocean floor.
Cayley said after inspections with remote-controlled submarines and divers, the company expects to "finalize our assessment of how best to close the relief valve safely" later Thursday.
The leak created a slick of about 30,000 acres ? or 27,000 football fields ? at its greatest extent, and the oil company has been criticized by environmental groups for a lack of transparency about the extent of the pollution.
Shell said Thursday the sheen of oil has receded to just 60 acres and will dissipate entirely without reaching shore.
Scottish Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said he has asked the British government and the company to be more forthcoming with information. On Wednesday, he said damage from the spill to fisheries is expected to be limited, and a single oil-smeared bird has been found so far.
The slick has remained at sea and there have been no repetition of scenes following the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, where sea life and birds were caught in thick red sludge.
Still, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds urged Shell to involve the Scottish government and environmental groups in the British government's investigation of the spill, warning that puffins, razorbills and guillemots on the open seas were at risk.
The organization's Scottish director, Stuart Housden, said the agency wants details of when Shell's infrastructure in the area was laid and how well it has been maintained.
"The inquiry must be broad enough to cover the preparedness and investment needed by government and industry to prevent future occurrences," he said in a statement Thursday.
Richard Dixon, director of the World Wildlife Fund Scotland, said the oil is toxic if ingested and could harm marine life and mammals.
"It is hard to understand why they took so long to be open about what is happening given what happened to BP in the Gulf of Mexico," he said. "The public has a right to know what is going on and need confidence in the organization instead of this culture of secrecy."
Dixon said birds and sea life would be damaged by the toxic slick and predicted heavy oil has come to rest on the seabed.
Harris said contingency plans were in place in case of further spillage including planes loaded with detergent ready to tackle a bigger slick.
Kim Blomley, Shell's spokesman in London, said the company has "tried to be as open as is reasonable and possible, given the situation." He pointed to daily media updates and the company's Twitter feed.
The last major spill in the North Sea occurred in 1993, when the oil tanker MV Braer ran aground in the Shetland Islands, spilling around 620,000 barrels of crude into the sea.

Surviving Menopause with Soy
When the Battered Are Men
Examining Links Between Violence and Substance Abuse
Raising Awareness in the Korean Community
Joan Clark was on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for 10 years, but after hearing about the dangers of long-term HRT use, she immediately stopped taking the drugs. She wasn?t prepared for what came next.
?Women now are advised to taper off the drugs, but I just stopped cold,? she explains. That was in August of 2001. ?The symptoms of menopause came back ? full force ? in just two weeks.?
When a co-worker told Clark about a Johns Hopkins School of Nursing trial testing the potential of soy to lower cholesterol levels and alleviate menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women, her interest was piqued. Clark?s main concern was easing her hot flashes and mood swings, but when enrolled in the trial, she was alerted to a serious health concern.
?My cholesterol had crept up to 260! I see an internist every year, and I had no idea it was that high,? says Clark, a Hopkins employee since 1965. Clark qualified for the NIH-funded study ? the Beneficial Effects of Soy Trial (BEST) ? led by Jerilyn Allen, ScD, RN, professor and associate dean for research at the School of Nursing. The study looks at postmenopausal women with slightly elevated levels of cholesterol. Though such levels would not necessarily require medication, they might increase lifetime risk for cardiovascular disease. Researchers aim to enroll a total of 180 women in the study.
?Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality and disability in postmenopausal women,? Allen says. ?Lack of estrogen from menopause can cause increases in bad cholesterol and decreases in good cholesterol, which can lead to narrowing of the arteries and increased risk for heart attack.?
Previous clinical trials have shown that soy protein containing isoflavones (a plant hormone that resembles a weak version of human estrogen) can offset high cholesterol. According to Allen, what sets this study apart from others is that recruitment targets equal numbers of African American women and white women.
?There is very little research [involving] African American postmenopausal women. Many of these women prefer natural remedies as opposed to medication,? explains Allen. ?This is a group that is eager for alternatives to hormone replacement therapy.?
As an initial step, each woman in the study is given a health assessment. Then BEST provides an hour?s worth of nutrition and diet counseling so that the participants can make healthier choices. The women then begin the four month program, taking a daily shake-like drink, which may or may not contain a soy protein. The women are randomly assigned to one of the two groups, and the study is double-blind, so neither participants nor researchers know which women are receiving the soy supplement and which are taking the placebo. At the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of the four months, each woman?s cholesterol levels are measured and each completes a questionnaire about her symptoms of menopause.
Unlike Joan Clark, BEST participants Brenda Joyce Johnson and Jean Headen weren?t too concerned about easing the symptoms of menopause. They were primarily interested in soy?s positive effects on cholesterol. Both women learned about the study from a flier posted at their jobs.
Johnson says she began trying to improve her health last year and decided to participate in the study because she knew that consuming soy, along with eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising, and avoiding salt, was good for her health.
With a total cholesterol level at 280 mg/DL, Headen?s doctor considered putting her on medication, but Headen resisted. ?The hardest thing for me to accept about getting older is taking medication,? she says.
So Headen started watching what she ate and exercising more, and she participated in the BEST pilot study, in which 17 women were all given a daily soy supplement. Her cholesterol dropped to 160 and she enrolled in the larger study.
Participants in the study are given the opportunity to receive a free three-month supply of soy supplement once they complete the trial, and program coordinator Carol Curtis says most women take advantage of this offer.
But Headen chose not to. ?I was able to drink the supplement every morning while I was in the study, but after a while, it just got boring,? she says.
Allen says that boredom with the regime and non-compliance points to an important ?next step.? ?A logical extension of the study, if effective, is how to incorporate soy into everyday foods,? she explains. ?This will present a problem with some women, particularly low-income women, because soy products, like tofu, may not be readily accessible in low-income areas.?
Most women are glad to have participated in the trial, says Curtis: ?The women tell me they like being part of a study that may lead to ways to help our daughters and granddaughters survive menopause without taking hormones.?
Recruitment for the study continues and final results will be available next year.

In spite of common belief, victims of domestic violence are not always women. Michael Relf, PhD, RN, ?01, a professor at the Georgetown University School of Nursing, authored a study on the prevalence of battering victimization among gay men, published in last December?s issue of the American Journal of Public Health. His research found that gay men living in big cities are as likely to be battered as heterosexual women and that two in five urban gay men were abused by a partner sometime in the last five years.

Are domestic violence and substance abuse related? Assistant Professor Benita Walton-Moss, DNSc, RN, ?78, intends to find out. She is principal investigator of a study that was recently awarded grant support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The research focuses on abused women who are also substance abusers. Walton-Moss examines the relationship between intimate partner violence and the physical and mental health of women entering substance abuse treatment.
Walton-Moss will also adapt and implement a cognitive behavioral therapy specifically for abused women in drug treatment and obtain initial results of the therapy?s effectiveness in reducing substance use, improving health outcomes, increasing safety behaviors, and preventing further violence.

After a grueling So You Think You Can Dance season, which included both a Top 20 and the All-Stars, the four finalists -- Marko, Melanie, Sasha and Tadd -- faced off for the last time. So who came out the winner of Season 8?
Before we get to the results, the Top 20 returned for an intense leather-clad group number. Sasha and All-Star Kent took the stage next with the contemporary dance backdropped by the wall, and finally fan-favorite pairing Melanie and Marko performed the NappyTabs hip-hop number.
What's on your Watchlist? Create one and add favorites like So You Think You Can Dance
Among the other judges' picks for favorite routines of the season: Tadd and Lauren's jazz number to "Another One Bites the Dust"; Melanie and Neil's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" contemporary piece; Marko and Allison's contemporary dance to "I Know It's Over"; and Sasha and Twitch's heartwarming hip-hop dance to "Misty Blue."
For the group numbers, host Cat Deeley chose the Top 8 Circus number. The Top 10 girls also came together for the "Pop Drop and Roll" jazz number from Sonya Tayeh, while the boys teamed up for the "Velocity" piece with the doors.
Capping off the night, Melanie and Marko wowed the crowd with the contemporary statue piece from Week 1 that judge Nigel Lythgoe hailed as Emmy-worthy. The top two ladies took on the "Game On" jazz number before the champion of Season 8 was announced.
So You Think You Can Dance performance photos
And the winner is... contemporary dancer Melanie, the 19-year-old Ginnifer Goodwin doppelganger whom we called a frontrunner from the beginning. In tears, Melanie could only muster up a "thank you," before being engulfed by her fellow dancers.
Sasha came in as the runner-up, while Marko and Tadd came in third and fourth, respectively.

As many metal detecting enthusiasts know, seashores are some of the most favored spot for most hunters. The often-packed sands aren?t something that will daunt an enthusiastic detectorist, expert or otherwise. Because of this extremely popular status, they tend to become jampacked for metal detectorists as well.
Usually, metal detecting hobbyists are usually seen swaying their metal detectors on a solo search. It?s, usually, a solo activity. You will find a few who want to hunt in pairs or in groups. Additionally, from time to time, you will find exclusive events such as club hunts in which an entire team descends on a pre-specified spot for a planned out quest. However these are all exceptions to the general rule.
How then, should hobbyists conduct themselves when tracking on the same spot of terrain? Let?s say you?re dealing with the same seashore as another metal detectorist? In the peak of summer or over the vacations, it is really possible that yours isn?t the only metal detector sweeping through the sand.
To begin with, no matter if you are new for the activity or not, let the rules of manners and good sense advise you. Firstly, be considerate. The other individual is taking pleasure in a pastime, like you are. Treat them as you would wish to be dealt with-if you are not feeling chatty, that is okay, but be courteous, return a greeting if you get it or give one if you find the opportunity.
Try not to encroach on each other?s area. I would not want to hit metal detectors with anyone else, not even if I went to the beach with hunting partner. He-or she-can hunt way over there and we can holler to each other if or once we find anything fascinating or possibly just evaluate notes after our quest.
As with every little thing in this world, you may come across individuals who may try your persistence. They are there, even in the hobby of metal detecting. Therefore, take this into account lest you get caught unawares, get angry, and you might get enticed to use you metal detector as bat. You will find unpleasant characters even out there on the beach. In case you do come across them, it is recommended to simply go on your way and enjoy your activity.

Great leaders know how to inspire and motivate all types of people. The employees are motivated in different ways. Need to find out what makes sense for every employee in its nature. Why come to work? Why travel? What are their dreams and desires? I coach a number of "old" managers who are sometimes puzzled by the mentality of their younger colleagues.
How well do you know your younger workers? With a technical approach and learn to ask powerfulQuestions can often reveal what really counts.
How can managers of the potential of young workers? What is needed to help young people, the boomers are out of date and out of touch should believe leaders ask themselves the following questions:
1st What do you want from my employer, employees and professional experience to work?
2nd As salary, benefits and promotion opportunities to influence the loyalty?
3rd Since my direct reports to define theirIdentity?
4th My new workers believe in paying their membership fees for as long as it takes, or are motivated by challenges and self-realization from the beginning?
5th How will my relatives younger workers? There you can take care of themselves?
For the younger generations of future work has never been so difficult and uncertain. As a leader, one of the major tasks is attracting, coaching and retaining talented employees. You mustdevelop empathy and learn to play the role of young people without seeing prejudices or opinions, even if it's human nature, as inexperienced and naive.
Bridging the gap
The generation gap has never been greater. On one side we have an entrenched group with 30 years experience in the work, often with few companies. Most believe that there is only one way to do things, including that of carrot and stick motivation.
On the other hand, we havehave a great group of people who have entered the shadowy job with a degree, superior technical skills and life in general and working strategies.
The gap can and must be completed. If you are a manager in the older group, you must learn to make adjustments in order to justify the large population of young workers. Your challenge is simple, but complex: it is necessary to determine which individual differences are superficial and that beliefs are deeply rooted. Then,to reconcile with the traditional beliefs of staff valid hierarchical model. Each group must be a concerted effort to understand the other teams so they can discover and define the best paths to success in the workplace.
Are you ready for the challenge? You should consider working with a coach who can communicate effectively with employees at all ages.
