The mobile market is substantially penetrated globally with approximately 6 billion mobile subscribers, or 87 percent of the world?s population. In the United States there are 325 million mobile subscriptions, a 103 percent penetration rate.

The rapid adoption of smartphones continues, representing greater than 50 percent of mobile handsets in the U.S. currently with further penetration gains anticipated. The smartphone is effectively a powerful mobile computer and its adoption and evolving use, along with tablets and e-readers, is resulting in new consumer behavior and expectations related to the consumption of information and the purchase of goods and services.

At the same time, the rapid emergence and consumer adoption of Facebook and other social networks is a sociological phenomenon unparalleled in human history.

Early in October the number of active users of the Facebook network surpassed 1 billion, one-seventh of the world?s population, and nearly half of global Internet users.

Each day, Facebook processes 2.7 billion ?Likes,? 300 million photo uploads, 2.5 billion status updates and check-ins, among other countless bits of data.

There are approximately 600 million people using Facebook on mobile phones and, as smartphones further penetrate, Facebook expects even more mobile usage and greater engagement. ?It?s just this massive opportunity,? said Facebook founder/CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Consumer services, including Facebook, Pandora and YouTube, among many others, are racing to monetize their very significant and rapidly growing mobile user base.

Mobile applications continue to proliferate and the mobile advertising market has finally taken off as advertisers, brands, marketers and publishers rush to deliver relevant targeted messages to mobile consumers based, in part, on location and type of device.

Similarly, retailers are adapting to shopping research on smartphones and tablets and in-store mobile usage while mobilizing their Web sites to optimize the mobile consumer and commerce experience.

As smartphones and tablets enter the global mainstream, an entire ecosystem of services and technologies are emerging to capitalize on the trend. We are in the early innings of a mobile revolution engendered by increasingly faster, more affordable mobile Internet access on a global basis.

How the iPhone changed the mobile game

The mobile revolution really started in 2007 with Apple ? s introduction of the iPhone. The iPhone radically and irreversibly redefined mobile devices with relatively fast and simple Web access, an innovative and intuitive touch screen, and the creation/promotion of mobile applications and a mobile app marketplace.

Previously, wireless devices largely functioned as wireless telephones or wireless email devices.

With the iPhone, the world?s first consumer smartphone, mobile devices became mobile computers that also serve as voice and text communication devices.

The iPhone, handsets powered by Google?s Android mobile operating system and other smartphones have provided consumers around the globe the first affordable, personal computer, driving one of the largest and fastest shifts in consumer behavior ever.

Equally importantly, while perhaps less well understood, is how Apple caused a fundamental shift in the balance of power among wireless industry behemoths, similar to how it upended the music industry earlier in the decade with the introduction of the iPod.

The iPhone enabled its users to directly surf the Internet through its mobile Safari browser instead of using the mobile carrier?s own portal, providing device manufacturers direct customer and revenue relationships.

By allowing Internet access and portal competition wireless carriers ceded control of their own customers, engendering the dumb pipes descriptor in the process.

The success of the iPhone has resulted in less control by the wireless carriers, more innovation in mobile operating systems by device manufacturers and developers and more affordable and increasingly more powerful mobile computing products for consumers.

The iPhone also led directly to Apple?s design and introduction in April 2010 of the iPad, its subsequent consumer electronic category creator and blockbuster.

Success of Android

The iPhone ushered in a new mobile era and growing unit sales continue to generate incredible financial returns for Apple. It also generated an immediate competitive response from Google.

In 2008, Google launched Android as an alternative mobile operating system through a no-fee, open-source licensing model, providing device manufacturers and mobile carriers significant freedom and flexibility to design products while relying on manufacturers to build and promote Android devices and the carriers and other retailers to sell them to consumers.

Google?s no-fee licensing model has resulted in rapid adoption in the smartphone market such that Android is now the leading mobile operating system globally.

In fact, the Android OS accounted for 72 percent of all smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2012. Samsung is the leading Android smartphone manufacturer by a large margin, accounting for 34 percent of global smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2012.

While Android is now the dominant smartphone OS, the tablet market has proven more difficult to penetrate.

In the third quarter of 2012, the Apple iPad maintains a 50 percent market share, followed by Samsung at 18 percent and Amazon at 9 percent (both Samsung and Amazon use the Android OS).

The recent introduction for the holiday selling season of the iPad Mini and a slew of new Android-based tablets will make for interesting market share comparisons in January.

Apple is a manufacturer and retailer and generates revenue and a solid margin on the sale of each and every Mac, iPod, iPhone, iMac and iPad.

Google generates no direct revenue through the adoption by manufacturers of the Android OS.

On the other hand, all these devices are optimized for Google applications generating an enormous amount of consumer usage data that Google then monetizes through the sale of advertising.

Google also generates revenue through third party and direct sales of Nexus smartphones and tablets, although these Google devices are contract manufactured by third-parties.

Mobile subscriber stats

As noted earlier, at the close of 2011 there were approximately 6 billion mobile subscribers on a global basis. This represents a penetration rate of approximately 87 percent based on a current global population of 7 billion.

Developed countries represent 25 percent of these subscriptions with 122 percent penetration, while developing countries represent 75 percent of the subscriptions and 78 percent penetration.

Global subscribers are forecasted to grow at 5.4 percent from 2012-2016 according to Portio Research.

Smartphone and tablet subscriptions growing rapidly

In a June 2012 report from Ericsson, at year-end 2012 there will be approximately 1 billion smartphone subscribers and 250 million mobile PC and tablet subscribers globally.

These segments are projected to grow at 30 percent and 25 percent CAGR, respectively, through 2017 such that smartphone and mobile PC/tablet subscriptions (data-heavy devices) total 3.8 billion in 2017, 43 percent of mobile subscriptions.

The segment identified as HT smartphones refers to High-Traffic devices, which typically generate 5-10 times more traffic than low-traffic devices. It is estimated that the HT share of total smartphones reached 50 percent at the end of 2011, and will represent the vast majority in 2017.

The Ericsson report also tracks and forecasts mobile broadband subscriptions, which includes those devices using a Wi-Fi network and a declining number of feature phones with a mobile Web browser. This subscriber base is also anticipated to grow at a 30 percent CAGR through 2017 to 5.1 billion, a 57 percent penetration rate of total mobile subscriptions.

In the U.S. there are approximately 115 million smartphone and 74 million tablet users currently.

Smartphones now comprise in excess of 50 percent of the mobile handsets in the U.S., while tablets have penetrated to approximately 31 percent of the U.S. Internet population ages 8-64 and are found in approximately 25 percent of U.S. homes.

Substantial growth in both smartphone and tablet unit sales remains for the U.S. market, although projected growth outside the U.S., particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, is even greater.

Over the next five years mobile subscriptions will continue to grow modestly, while the penetration of smartphones, HT smartphones and mobile broadband subscribers is forecast to increase rapidly and substantially. Consider that slightly more than half of the world?s population will have access to the Internet on their mobile device by 2017.

Mobile data overtakes voice

As smartphones have penetrated the consumer market global traffic on mobile networks has changed dramatically since 2007.

Consistent with the shift in usage to Internet access and information/entertainment consumption, voice traffic has grown modestly, while data traffic has exploded with rapid growth commencing in the second half of 2008. Mobile data traffic now exceeds mobile voice traffic by a four times multiple.

Mobile traffic reflects individual usage, which derives, in part, from the screen size of the mobile device.

Generally, the larger the screen the more time spent watching video, one of the most traffic consumptive activities.

By the end of 2011, an average mobile PC/tablet generated approximately four times the mobile data traffic produced by an HT smartphone, which, in turn, generated two times the traffic of an average smartphone.

Mobile data traffic is expected to continue to grow rapidly, increasing at a 60 percent CAGR from 2011 to 2017, while voice traffic remains stable.

Forecasted data traffic in 2017 will be 15 times greater overall compared to 2011, reflecting both subscription and usage growth, particularly of mobile video, a significant bandwidth hog.

On average, a mobile PC generates approximately four times more traffic than a HT smartphone.

By the end of 2011, an average mobile PC generated approximately 2 GB per month versus 500 MB per month produced by HT smartphones.

An average smartphone generates approximately one-half the volume of an HT smartphone. By the end of 2017, it is estimated that a mobile PC/tablet will generate 8 GB of traffic per month, and a smartphone just above 1 GB, such that mobile PCs/tablets generate slightly more than one-half of mobile data traffic in 2017.

In 2017, approximately one-third of the installed base of mobile PCs is estimated to have a broadband subscription, with the remaining using Wi-Fi or Ethernet to connect or assumed not to connect.

At the same time, approximately one-half of tablets are expected to have a built-in broadband modem, though not all will have an active subscription. It is estimated that currently only 13 percent of tablet users worldwide have a data subscription, choosing to connect via Wi-Fi rather than the cellular mobile networks.

Entertainment and mobile video rules

There are a number of ways to express consumer behavior on mobile devices. One way is to analyze the type of traffic generated by mobile devices.

From this perspective and measuring traffic during peak period, real-time entertainment is the dominant traffic category on the mobile network, accounting for 49.9 percent of all bytes sent and received, followed by Web browsing at 16 percent and social networking at 10.5 percent.

Social networking apps typically generate far less traffic than real-time entertainment apps that stream audio and video, underscoring further their popularity and usage.

YouTube has become the dominant app on mobile networks (Netflix dominates on fixed networks) with a 28 percent aggregate traffic share, Facebook is ranked fourth with an 8 percent share and Pandora is now ranked sixth in upstream-downstream traffic usage. Facebook accounts for 15.4 percent of the upstream traffic on the mobile network, the largest single share.

From a traffic perspective, Cisco estimates that mobile video will grow at a 90 percent CAGR between 2011 and 2016, the highest growth rate of any mobile app category forecasted, generating over 70 percent of mobile data traffic by 2016. The mobile Web is forecast to generate 20 percent of mobile data traffic in 2017, the second largest category after mobile video.

Cloud apps globally will account for 71 percent of total mobile data traffic in 2016, compared to 45 percent at the end of 2011. Mobile cloud traffic is projected to grow 28-fold from 2011 to 2016, a compound annual growth rate of 95 percent.

How we spend our time

Mobile traffic is one means of identifying consumer mobile behavior, but since different apps generate greater/lesser amounts of traffic it is also important to understand how much time we spend on each app.

According to eMarketer, time spent on mobile devices has increased from 22 minutes per day in 2009 to an estimated 82 minutes a day in 2012, a nearly four times increase.

In October 2011, McKinsey & Co. published minute-by-minute mobile device usage based on findings from its iConsumer survey.

Out of a total of 119 minutes of reported daily use in the U.S., 32 percent of time was spent on entertainment, nearly one-third of that playing games, while another 32 percent of time was spent talking or instant messaging.

Further, we spend 10 percent of our time on social networks and a nearly equal amount, 8.4 percent, either browsing/searching on the Internet or shopping/researching and searching locally.

Across most retail categories, mobile accounts for about a third of online consumer research and 44 percent of the time this research is done inside the physical store ? to check out the competition, to compare prices, or to use mobile-specific tools such as bar code scanners.

Usage does differ modestly from one country to the next and varies considerably by demographic.

Demographics matter

American youths, ages 13-34, have digital lives distinct from older U.S. consumers.

According to another McKinsey report using the same iConsumer survey data, this age group prefers smartphones or tablets and eschews PCs and many laptops. Landline telephones are considered almost a curiosity as are CDs and most hard-copy media such as newspapers, magazines and books.

Compared to consumers ages 35-64, the younger age group is 1.5 times to two times more likely to own a smartphone, tablet, Internet-enabled gaming console or Internet video box.

Similarly, the 13-34 age grouping is more than 1.5 times more likely to go online to communicate through social networks and VoIP/video chat or to access entertainment online or on-demand.

Further, compared to the 35-64 age group, this cohort uses their mobile devices 3x longer each day and, as a proportion of aggregate time spent, spends twice as long engaged with applications on mobile versus on the PC.

This tech-savvy cohort is entering its prime spending years and the cultural and consumptive behavior of this younger generation has important implications for emerging and established information, lifestyle and technology brands, in particular.

Tablets are not as mobile as smartphones

According to the Online Publishers Association, tablet owners are slightly older, more female and wealthier compared to smartphone owners.

The average age of a tablet owner is 34, compared to 30 for smartphones, while smartphone owners skew more male at 56 percent male ownership compared to 51 percent male ownership of tablets. Tablets are more of a shared device and less ?personal? than smartphones while the larger screen enables more multimedia consumption.

According to Nielsen data, 70 percent of consumers? time spent with tablets occurs at home. Tablets are used an average of 13.9 hours per week and more frequently at night, particularly during the 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. prime-time television viewing hours.

Forrester Research has recently reported that 85 percent of U.S. tablet owners use their devices while in front of the television, while 57 percent of smartphone and tablet owners checked email, 44 percent visited a social network and 19 percent searched for product information while watching TV.

Tablet usage behavior goes beyond interaction with the TV. Research indicates that 30 percent of tablet users actually spend more time reading news compared to before purchasing the tablet.

While free streaming makes up the majority of content consumed across all platforms, TV has the highest share of paid content (35 percent), followed by the tablet (29 percent), smartphones (19 percent) and PCs (17 percent).

Consumers spend more time using tablets for more immersive activities with games, social networking and entertainment categories accounting for 86 percent of consumption.

Smartphones claim a higher proportion of communication and task-oriented activities with social networking (24 percent), utilities (17 percent), health and fitness (3 percent) and lifestyle (3 percent) commanding nearly half of all usage on smartphones.

Social networking is altering the way users communicate. Games are the most popular category on both form factors with 67 percent of time spent using games on tablets and 39 percent of time spent using games on smartphones.

More broadly, social networking is altering the way users communicate.

According to McKinsey, since 2008 social networking has almost doubled its share of consumer communications time, from 15 percent to 29 percent, mostly at the expense of the phone.

This change in behavior is even more pronounced when generational differences are considered as consumers under the age of 25 spend nearly 40 percent of their communications time on social networks, double the rate of those over age 45.

Wrap-up and looking ahead

The rapid proliferation of smartphones and tablets is profoundly changing the way that we behave, consume content and conduct commerce.

The ubiquity of wireless connectivity combined with increasing functionality and speed of connected devices and mobile networks will further drive consumer demand for media, content and advertising while monetization models continue to evolve.

The smartphone and tablet are going mainstream. We have watched mobile usage and uses grow dramatically since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007, the Android OS in 2008 and the iPad in 2010.

The research of Cisco, Ericsson, Sandvine and others provides reasonable visibility regarding continued growth and adoption of smartphones and tablets, their population and household penetration five years from now and growth in data consumption. We know that time spent on these devices has increased substantially and that mobile consumption of video and social networks will continue to expand.

The McKinsey study on the digital consumption behavior of the 13-34 age grouping provides insights as to consumer behavior in the future.

We know that consumer behavior on a smartphone is different than on a tablet. We know that tablets are increasingly becoming available in different sizes, potentially representing additional distinct consumer use cases.

It is also apparent that mobile consumers are becoming active mobile shoppers. As smartphones and tablets go mainstream and consumers spend more time engaging on their devices, publishers continue to explore various monetization models, while advertisers, brands, and marketers shift increasing advertising budgets and spend, both response and brand, through the mobile medium.

Media, entertainment and information companies are investing to mobilize their Web sites and in new services and technologies to capitalize on resulting fundamental shifts in consumer behavior.

Established and emerging mobile advertising technology companies are also developing and providing solutions to enable marketers and advertisers to reach cost-effectively this vast mobile audience on a targeted basis at scale.

The mobile market is complex, fragmented and both growing and evolving rapidly. We are in the early innings of a mobile revolution engendered by more affordable mobile computing and Internet access on a global basis.

Dealing with Valentine's Day in a Long-Distance Relationship

With Valentine?s Day approaching and an unavoidable amount dinner specials and flower bouquet deals, some couples will be forced to share the romance hundred of miles away.

But for them, the distance is just part of the daily frustration that comes with being in a long-distance relationship.

?Making a long-distance relationship work depends greatly on who the people are. Each relationship has its own demands,? Dr. Bruce Derman, a relationship expert and clinical psychologist in California said.

Motivational speaker David Coleman, also known as ?The Dating Doctor,? admits that these relationships have a low probability of succeeding. From what he?s observed, two out of three don?t make it.

?People end up fighting because they have nothing new to talk about and they don?t really know what they?re saying to each other,? Coleman said, noting that it is sometimes difficult for humans to spend that much time apart and still have the same affection for each other.

Yet many are not letting the distance or the time apart deter them from a romantic evening.

?Communication is definitely key, as clich? as that is,? University of California ? Los Angeles junior Monica Shei said. ?But in a situation where time zones get to be a huge obstacle, a simple call or text makes all the difference.?

Shei has been with her boyfriend, Yan Man, a senior at Oxford University for three years.

Their secret? Planning their schedules the night before and calling each other every morning.

?Different time zones doesn?t really give us a lot of space to be spontaneous so we typically plan our schedules the night before and tell each other when we?re free to talk in order to avoid confusion or disappointment,? Shei said.

Man?s formula for success is much more straightforward: ?Try not to make Monica mad at me.?

Each relationship and situation is different, but according to experts, the key to success is effort.

?You have to put out that extra effort, that extra commitment,? Derman said. ?You can?t just have a natural flow, it?s not just ?I?ll just see you when it?s okay for me.? All get-togethers are a project that?s going to require a lot of planning. You have to be willing to meet that demand.?

Qigong Improves Quality of Life for Breast Cancer Patients | Psych ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on January 26, 2013

Qigong Improves Quality of Life for Breast Cancer Patients New research has found that qigong, an ancient mind-body practice, has been found to reduce depression and improve the quality of life in women undergoing radiation for breast cancer.

The study examined qigong in patients receiving radiation therapy and included a follow-up period to assess its benefits over time, according to researchers.

?We were [...] particularly interested to see if qigong would benefit patients experiencing depressive symptoms at the start of treatment,? said Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., a professor in the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center?s Departments of General Oncology and Behavioral Science.

?It is important for cancer patients to manage stress because it can have a profoundly negative effect on biological systems and inflammatory profiles.?

For the study, Cohen and his colleagues recruited 96 women with stage 1-3 breast cancer from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in Shanghai, China.

About half of the women ? 49 ? were randomly assigned to a qigong group consisting of five 40-minute classes each week during their five-to-six week course of radiation therapy. The remaining 47 women comprised a control group receiving standard care.

The program incorporated a modified version of Chinese medical qigong, which consisted of synchronizing one?s breath with various exercises, the researchers explained.

Participants in both groups completed assessments at the beginning, middle and end of radiation therapy and then one and three months later. Different aspects of quality of life were measured, including depressive symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and overall quality of life.

According to the researchers, patients in the qigong group reported a steady decline in depressive symptom scores beginning at the end of radiation therapy, with a mean score of 12.3, through the three month post-radiation follow-up with a score of 9.5. No changes were noted in the control group over time, the study found.

The study also found that qigong was especially helpful for women reporting high baseline depressive symptoms, Cohen said.

?We examined women?s depressive symptoms at the start of the study to see if women with higher levels would benefit more,? he said.

?In fact, women with low levels of depressive symptoms at the start of radiotherapy had good quality of life throughout treatment and three months later regardless of whether they were in the qigong or control group. However, women with high depressive symptoms in the control group reported the worst levels of depressive symptoms, fatigue, and overall quality of life that were significantly improved for the women in the qigong group.?

As the benefits of qigong were largely observed after treatment concluded, researchers suggest qigong may prevent a delayed symptom burden or expedite the recovery process, especially for women with elevated depressive symptoms at the start of radiation therapy. Cohen notes the delayed effect could be explained by the cumulative nature of the treatments, as the benefits often take time to be realized.

According to the researchers, the findings support other previously reported trials examining the benefits of qigong, but are too preliminary to offer clinical recommendations.

They note that additional research is needed to understand the possible biological mechanisms involved and further explore the use of qigong in ethnically diverse populations with different forms of cancer.

The study was published in the journal Cancer.

On Mars, Dry Ice 'Smoke' Carves Up Sand Dunes

The seasonal thawing of carbon dioxide ice near Mars' north pole carves grooves in the region's sand dunes, three new studies reveal.

The discovery, made using observations from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft (MRO), reinforces that the Red Planet's surface continues to be transformed today, even though Mars' volcanoes have died out and its liquid surface water apparently dried up long ago.?

"It's an amazingly dynamic process," Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz., lead author of one of the studies, said in a statement. "We had this old paradigm that all the action on Mars was billions of years ago. Thanks to the ability to monitor changes with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, one of the new paradigms is that Mars has many active processes today."

MRO photographed dunes in Mars' far northern latitudes using its High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera, or HiRise. The images revealed a number of grooves appearing in the dunes as the northern spring took hold and progressed. [Dry Ice 'Smoke' Moves Mars Sand (Video)]

The phenomenon is driven by the springtime thawing of a surface layer of frozen carbon dioxide, also known as dry ice.

This thawing occurs first on the ice layer's underside, which is in contact with the warming ground, researchers said. The dry ice sublimes from a solid state to a gaseous one, and pressure builds as more and more gas is produced and trapped.?

Eventually, cracks form in the ice and some of the carbon dioxide gas breaks free, forming temporary grooves in the dune as it hisses out.

The escaping gas also carries sand, which forms dark streaks as it spills across the dry ice covering the dune. These dark fans disappear as the seasonal ice evaporates, and Martian winds erase most of the newly formed grooves before the next winter and springtime roll around.

The grooves are smaller versions of the "gullies" MRO has spotted on other, steeper Martian dunes, which were apparently formed in a similar way, researchers said. And similar processes have been observed near the Red Planet's south pole.

"It is a challenge to catch when and how those changes happen, they are so fast," Ganna Portyankina of the University of Bern in Switzerland, lead author of another one of the studies, said in a statement. "That's why only now we start to see the bigger picture that both hemispheres actually tell us similar stories."

The three new studies, which appear in the journal Icarus, were based on observations made by MRO over three Martian years, or about six Earth years. The papers document a variety of seasonal changes on Mars, including the dune grooves and the distribution of water frost, which is blown around by springtime winds.

India: 35-year term not enough for Mumbai plotter

NEW DELHI (AP) ? India expressed disappointment Friday with the 35-year sentence given to an American who admitted his role in the 2008 Mumbai attack, saying he deserved more prison time for the terrorism that killed 166 people in the country's financial capital.

David Headley was sentenced Thursday in a U.S. federal court in Chicago. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said he would have possibly received a "more serious and severe" sentence had he been tried in India.

"The 35-year sentence is a beginning. We will continue our efforts to ensure that he is extradited and brought to India for trial," Khurshid told reporters.

Headley, 52, was born in the U.S. to a Pakistani father and an American mother and changed his birth name from Daood Gilani. He admitted that he helped plan the attack and videotaped targets that were later attacked.

In the three-day rampage, 10 gunmen from a Pakistani-based militant group fanned out across Mumbai, attacking a crowded train station, a landmark hotel and a Jewish center, among other targets.

Headley was arrested in the U.S. in 2009 and entered into a plea bargain with U.S. investigators under which he provided information about terror networks.

The U.S. State Department on Friday defended the handling of the case, saying that from Washington's perspective, it was a "very positive example" of U.S.-Indian counterterrorism collaboration.

The department ruled out Headley's extradition.

"He's been tried, convicted, and will serve in the United States," spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

Sundance: ?American Promise? offered filmmakers unusual access ? to their son

Sundance ? The film chronicles two Brooklyn boys over 12 years.

Few people wait longer to star in a Sundance film than Idris Brewster. It?s been 13 years since his parents, Joe Brewster and Mich?le Stephenson, began filming the documentary that turned into "American Promise."

"From when I can first remember, I had a camera around me. So I don?t think I had a choice," Idris Brewster said.

?

?American Promise?

The documentary screens Wednesday, Jan. 23, 7 p.m. at Redstone Cinema 2, Park City; Thursday, Jan. 24 at 2:45 p.m., Broadway Center Cinema 6, Salt Lake City; Friday, Jan. 25, 11:15 a.m., the MARC, Park City; Saturday, Jan. 26, 3 p.m., Yarrow Hotel Theatre, Park City.

The documentary will air either later this year or in early 2014 on PBS?s ?P.O.V.?

Shot over 12 years, "American Promise" follows Idris and his best friend, Oluwaseun "Seun" Summers ? a couple of Brooklyn kids ? as they attended the prestigious, historically white Dalton School on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Gifted students, Idris and Seun soon faced new challenges, as did their parents.

Joe Brewster, a Harvard- and Stanford-trained psychiatrist, and his wife, Mich?le Stephenson, a Columbia Law School graduate and filmmaker, began working on the project in 1999. It?s about growing up, as well as class, gender and generational issues, with a particular focus on African-American boys. "I think when we started, we didn?t really know what this journey was going to be," Stephenson said.

And they didn?t really begin to decide when they began the editing process, about a decade after they began filming. They had acquired 800 hours of footage, and the first draft of the film came in at about 32 hours. Now it screens at 142 minutes.

The filming took place over a dozen years, but sporadically. "It?s not like we had the camera on [on] a consistent or constant basis," she said. "It was a very structured thing and as discreet as possible."

But not always discreet enough for her son once he hit high school."I didn?t want to be that kid with the camera following me around," Idris Brewster said. "But now, in retrospect, I?m really glad. And I?m coming to terms with people knowing me from the movie, and I?m ready to enjoy it."

This isn?t a look back through rose-colored glasses. Joe Brewster and Stephenson aren?t perfect parents, and the film reflects that.

"There were times when we were looking at the footage and wondering, ?Did I really say that to my son???" Joe Brewster said. "And then to have the editors tell you that you need to improve on your parenting skills, that was a bit much."

According to Idris Brewster, a lot was expected of him by his parents and the Dalton School. "My parents have always been hard on me, so I was sort of used to it," he said. "But there were a lot of sobering moments where it was just hard and I didn?t want to do it anymore. But I stuck with it."

story continues below

It couldn?t have been easy when your father "went into this process thinking that our son would graduate summa and become president of the United States of America," Joe Brewster said. "And only after a number of years into the process we began to tamp down on our expectations."

Brewster?s and Stephenson?s feature film "The Keeper" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1996, and they?re elated to be back with "American Promise." They rented a house, and about 20 people who participated in the film in one form or another are joining them to celebrate. "It?s really a validation of this long process, and we are just beside ourselves with this opportunity," Stephenson said.

(AP) ? South Korea's new president will not tolerate North Korean provocations but will continue to push for dialogue with Pyongyang, a special envoy to President-elect Park Geun-hye said just hours after the North's top governing body declared it would continue atomic tests and rocket launches.

Park is strongly urging North Korea to refrain from conducting a nuclear test that could only worsen the tensions on the Korean Peninsula in the wake of a provocative long-range rocket launch in December, envoy Rhee In-je told The Associated Press and selected news outlets in Davos, Switzerland.

"President-elect Park makes it clear that North Korea's nuclear ambitions and further provocations against the South will not be tolerated," Rhee said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on Thursday. "In particular, she strongly urges North Korea to refrain from further worsening the situation by conducting a third nuclear test."

North Korea responded Friday by warning South Korea of "strong physical countermeasures" if Seoul takes part in U.N. sanctions aimed at punishing Pyongyang for the rocket launch.

"Sanctions mean war and a declaration of war against us," the Committee for Peaceful Unification of the Fatherland said in a statement carried by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency.

The latest warning comes in the wake of a U.N. Security Council decision Tuesday to condemn North Korea's Dec. 12 rocket launch as a violation of a ban against missile activity. The council, including Pyongyang ally China, also expanded sanctions against the regime.

North Korea's National Defense Commission responded by declaring that the regime is prepared to conduct a nuclear test in defiance of U.N. punishment, and it made clear that its long-range rockets are designed to carry not only satellites but also warheads aimed at striking the United States.

The commission, North Korea's top governing body led by leader Kim Jong Un, pledged Thursday to keep launching satellites and rockets and to conduct a nuclear test as part of a "new phase" of combat with the United States, which it blames for leading the U.N. bid to punish Pyongyang. It said a nuclear test was part of "upcoming" action but did not say exactly when or where it would take place.

"We do not hide that a variety of satellites and long-range rockets which will be launched by the DPRK one after another and a nuclear test of higher level which will be carried out by it in the upcoming all-out action, a new phase of the anti-U.S. struggle that has lasted century after century, will target against the U.S., the sworn enemy of the Korean people," the commission said, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said he has seen no outward sign that North Korea will follow through soon on its plan to conduct a test. But that doesn't mean preparations aren't taking place.

"They have the capability, frankly, to conduct these tests in a way that make it very difficult to determine whether or not they are doing it," Panetta told reporters in Washington.

North Korea claims the right to build nuclear weapons as a defense against the United States, its Korean War foe.

Their bitter three-year war ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, in 1953, and left the Korean Peninsula divided by the world's most heavily fortified demilitarized zone. The U.S. leads the U.N. Command that governs the truce and stations more than 28,000 troops in ally South Korea, a presence that North Korea cites as a key reason for its drive to build nuclear weapons.

North Korea is estimated to have stored up enough weaponized plutonium for four to eight bombs, according to scientist Siegfried Hecker, who visited the North's Nyongbyon nuclear complex in 2010.

In October, an unidentified spokesman at the National Defense Commission claimed that the U.S. mainland was within missile range. And at a military parade last April, North Korea showed off what appeared to be an intercontinental ballistic missile.

In 2009, Pyongyang declared that it would begin enriching uranium, which would give North Korea a second way to make atomic weapons.

The National Defense Commission's allusion to a "higher level" nuclear test most likely refers to a device made from highly enriched uranium, said Cheong Seong-chang, an analyst at the private Sejong Institute in South Korea. Experts say North Korea must keep testing its atomic devices so it can make them small enough to mount as nuclear warheads onto long-range missiles.

North Korea tested atomic devices in 2006 and 2009 after receiving U.N. condemnation for launching long-range rockets.

The U.S. envoy on North Korean issues, Glyn Davies, urged Pyongyang not to explode an atomic device.

"Whether North Korea tests or not, it's up to North Korea. We hope they don't do it. We call on them not to do it," he told reporters in Seoul after meeting Thursday with South Korean officials. "It will be a mistake and a missed opportunity if they were to do it."

White House spokesman Jay Carney on Thursday said North Korea's aggressive stance is unnecessary and warned against any further testing.

"North Korea's statement is needlessly provocative and a test would be a significant violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions," he said. "Further provocation would only increase Pyongyang's isolation, and its continued focus on its nuclear and missile program is doing nothing to help the North Korean people."

He said the recent U.N. resolution is a "strong message of the international community's opposition to North Korean provocations and these tightened sanctions will impede the growth of weapons of mass destruction programs in North Korea and the United States will be taking additional steps in that regard."

Carney did not elaborate on what those steps might be.

Despite her firm stand, Park, who takes office next month, wants to leave the window open to constructive dialogue with Pyongyang and will continue to provide food and medical aid as part of a "trust-building" policy for the two Koreas, envoy Rhee said.

"It is a gradual process based on mutual trust and respect, which can begin with keeping promises," he said.

She also advocates returning to the six-nation disarmament negotiations, Rhee said. North Korea walked away from those talks in 2009 and has said future disarmament talks are out off the table.

Droopys Felton clear favourite for Gala Coral Puppies at Hove - Bettor

Droopys Felton clear favourite for Gala Coral Puppies at Hove

Although there are five speedy hounds in Thursday?s Gala Coral Puppies at Hove, they will find it very difficult to get the better of Droopys Felton, who has been given the highest price of 10 to 11.

The bookies have made the right move by declaring him clear favourite. The black dog surely deserves the highest respect, as he is in very good form at the moment. After doing the goods at Monmore and Henlow, S. Cahill?s charge did plenty of damage at Romford.

On his penultimate trip, the son of Droopys Robinho was mighty impressive. He displayed a dominating performance, leading the proceedings all the way through. With the help of a superb act, he secured the first place by six and a half lengths.

The maverick hound perpetuated his marvellous work, and did well last time out. It was nothing more than unlucky loss for the big fellow, as he missed the crown only by 1? lengths.

Having performed consistently during the last few weeks, the April-11 hound is full of power. The draw is massively in his favour. After leaving the first trap, he will be enjoying a great opportunity to take an early lead. And if he succeeds in doing so, his chances of capturing the first rank will go up significantly.

Among his rivals are: Ard To Beat, Droopys Hooper, Makeit Eagle Eye, Kilcotton Bess, and Forest Will. The clash is due to get started at 20:18 GMT. It carries a handy prize of 175 pounds.

The home advantage can enable Droopys Hooper to provide the forecast. On his previous venture here, the black did well to seize the second place, missing the gold medal only by a head?s distance. That fine act would be a morale booster.

As far as Ard To Beat?s chances are concerned, stamina may ebb away when push comes to shove. Makeit Eagle Ey boasts winning form over course and distance.

A steep rise in class may nullify Kilcotton Bess? chances here. Forest Will does not match up to selection in terms of form. We wish the best of luck to all the hounds.

Spanish daily halts edition with fake Chavez photo

(AP) ? The leading Spanish newspaper El Pais withdrew and reprinted its Thursday edition after discovering that its front-page exclusive photograph supposedly showing ailing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez being treated in Cuba was a fake.

The newspaper apologized to its readers for the mistake and said it was investigating how the photo made its way into the paper. The Venezuelan government announced that it would sue El Pais saying the image was grotesque and an offense to Chavez's dignity.

The poor-quality image showed the head of a man apparently on a hospital bed with tubes in his mouth.

El Pais had received the picture from an agency, Gtres Online, which declined to comment on the situation. The agency handles mainly entertainment and celebrity photos. The agency also offered the photo to The Associated Press and another Spanish newspaper, which both turned it down.

El Pais said it withdrew its Thursday edition and changed its website after it discovered the photograph was not of Chavez. The Venezuelan president has not been seen in public since before he underwent cancer surgery on Dec. 11 in Cuba.

The newspaper early Friday published details of the incident on its website, saying it will review its procedures. It said the agency Gtres Online had offered the newspaper the image on Wednesday morning through regular channels. The newspaper said that when it asked Gtres Online about the origin of the photo, "the agency said it come from a Cuban nurse through her sister, a resident in Spain."

El Pais prints some 340,000 copies daily. Many copies had already been distributed before the decision to reprint but the newspaper declined to say how many with the fake photograph had reached the streets.

El Pais said the photograph was on its online edition for 30 minutes before the error was discovered and the site changed.

Venezuelan Information Minister Ernesto Villegas denounced the photograph as a fake in a series of Twitter messages. He said the picture came from a video of another man and he circulated a link. That video, uploaded to YouTube in 2008, clearly shows another patient lying on a treatment table as doctors and nurses insert a tube into his throat.

"Would El Pais publish a similar photo of some European leader? Of its director? Yellow journalism valid if the victim is a South American revolutionary," Villegas said in one tweet.

Speaking at a news conference, Villegas read a statement strongly condemning the Spanish newspaper for publishing the image, saying the daily "violated journalistic ethics" and "created an international scandal."

Foreign Minister Elias Jaua said Thursday night in a telephone call broadcast on state television that the government instructed its ambassador in Spain, Bernardo Alvarez, to work with the attorney general in preparing the case.

The foreign minister said Vice President Nicolas Maduro instructed officials "to take actions leading to a lawsuit against that daily for the acts that seriously offended the president's dignity."

Pedro J. Ramirez, editor of the Spanish paper El Mundo, said in tweets on Thursday that his paper was also offered the photo. However, he and other editors expressed reservations over whether it was genuine before announcing a unanimous decision to refuse it.

Santiago Lyon, AP vice president and director of photography, said the AP turned down the agency's offer of exclusive rights to distribute the photo "because of serious concerns over medical privacy issues as well as the authenticity and provenance of the image."

Business to Business Marketing PR | Blog | MBA&Co

?Business to business activities are rarely homogenous, one business might supply raw material to another, these companies need to understand each others systems, needs and market opportunities. Maintaining deadlines are a must and payments need to be made in time is usually done through retail marketing efforts. Retailers need help from manufacturers and vice versa to distribute products and services. Previously this was done using traditional methods of communication, now this can be done through online websites. Consumers can by products directly from the company without going through a distributor.

?

?The targeted ranges of publics are much shorter in business to business PR than other kinds of public relations. At times these groups might be individuals or small organisations, depending on the size of the organisation, Public relations strategies need to be devised. Buying decisions are made at different levels within an organisation; budgets are allocated for different departments so at times more expensive products, higher levels of management make buying decisions. Depending on the product or service and the cost of the product. Depending on the product or service and the cost the message needs to be sent to the right department within the organisation.

?

While writing press releases that are sent to newspapers, the language must be very simple, it must be jargon free. The business might be targeting another business, but at times the reader may not understand technical specifications. The press release writer must be able simplify the topic so that the buyer understands the product and the benefits it offers compared to their competitors.

?

Trade press is used to communicate with other businesses; different types of organisations can be targeted specifically in a trade press. Events such as exhibitions are organised, where these companies can interact, here the organisation can physically demonstrate a product or service.

?

Communicating between businesses need to be frequently to remind organisations about their products or services. Suppliers and vendors need to make a list, so that they can be kept informed about products and services. Business to business PR involves maintaining and fostering a relationship throughout the year.??
