Heads, shoulders, knees and toes: What?s the latest on injured UFC 159 fighters?

UFC 159 had a run of some odd injuries. How are the fighters feeling now?

First up, Alan Belcher, whose eye gushed blood after Michael Bisping accidentally poked him. Belcher's career went on hiatus in 2010 and 2011 when he had to undergo emergency eye surgery to save his vision. The sight of a doctor checking out Belcher's vision was worrisome. Luckily, he just needed stitches on his eyelid.

Bisping beat Belcher on Saturday, but is facing some medical issues of his own. He is suffering from nerve damage that requires surgery.

"I have stenosis, which is a trapped nerve that causes atrophy and numbness in my right arm,? Bisping said on Fuel TV after his fight at UFC 159. ?It?s progressively getting worse and worse. I saw a surgeon about six weeks before this fight and they told me I needed surgery (but) there was no way I was going to pull out of this fight.?

He said that he will head home and sort everything out when he decides his next steps are.

Finally, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones' toe nearly tore off during his fight with Chael Sonnen. Doctors fixed it up, and here's his update:

Thankfully, bone is no longer sticking out of his body.

Does a Pool Make a Home a Better Investment? | AOL Real Estate

Swimming poolBiggerPockets logo

By Tracy Royce

I know I'm not the only one with the looming feeling investors might face this time of year: "Should I buy a house that has a pool?" In places like Arizona, we might look at things a little differently (any relief from the scorching desert is a plus!). If you're in the Midwest, having a pool might mean different costs and value. But, let's look at the pros and cons of purchasing a rental or flip that has a pool.

How Bad Is It?

I've seen my share of distressed properties, and I guess after awhile, I feel like a Ghostbuster walking through freshly-minted foreclosures. ("I ain't afraid of no ghosts!") This comes with the exception of pools, though. A dark green pool may be hiding years of neglect, bad siding, algae, and who knows what else.

It can be difficult to estimate what pool repairs may be needed, and if you have, say, 20 minutes to do a full inspection of the house, the "ifs" of a range of $50 to $5,000 can swing your margins in the red quickly. If the home is a short sale, the pool may be sitting for months longer and cost more than you initially estimated, as well. If you have longer to get an inspection, and a pool person is able to give you an estimate on getting the pool back in working condition, then the initial costs may be worth the investment. However, there are further things to consider.

1. Who will be responsible for maintaining the pool?
2. Do your state laws require fencing, depending on who's purchasing/renting the house from you? If so, who's responsible for paying for that?
3. If you allow the renters (if you rent the property out) to take care of the pool, how are you assured they are actually checking and keeping the PH levels balanced and maintaining the cleaning?
4. Are you willing to accept the maintenance down the road for redoing decking/siding? Lost or stolen equipment?
5. What extra liability might you face if, heaven forbid, a serious or fatal accident should happen?

Liquid Gold?

Much of this might be negated if you're flipping the property. Similar to a fireplace in a warm-weather state building in more value (go figure!), a pool may add extra attraction to your property as well. It's advisable not to ever add the pool yourself, since dollar-for-dollar you will never recoup even your costs.

However, if there are matching houses and one has a pool, the one with the extra amenity may help you procure a buyer that much faster, therefore decreasing your holding time and/or increasing your sales price. I know many investors out there wouldn't touch a pool with a 6-foot pole (or a skimmer, I suppose!), but others find it to be a draw as a rental or a flip.

Vermont Telephone Company's Gigabit internet service is live, half the price of Google Fiber

http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/28/vermount-telephone-companys-gigabit-internet/

Remember how Google Fiber's recent announcement for planned service in Austin by 2014 spurred immediate competition from AT&T? It's safe to say telcos in other areas have taken note about the Gigabit speeds, not to mention the $70 montly pricing. According to the Wall Street Journal, Vermont Telephone Company is now offering Gigabit-speed service to some of its customers for the crazy-low price of $35 bucks a month. To keep things in perspective, WSJ notes that roughly 600 folks are subscribed (out of VTel's total base of about 17.5K) and that the company is essentially going to be analyzing whether the current pricing will remain for the long-term. With Google Fiber to continuing to expand, it's certainly promising to see how superspeed internet is trickling across the US -- and how easy it's been looking on the wallet.

How to mark a podcast as already played with the Podcasts app for iPhone and iPad

Listening to and watching podcasts with the Podcasts app for iPhone and iPad is simple enough but if you subscribe to quite a few feeds, your unplayed count can get pretty high. If you'd rather pick and choose episodes but don't want badge counts or unread counts for ones you don't plan on listening to or watching, you can always just mark them as played already.

Here's how:

How to mark an individual podcast episode as played

  1. Launch the Podcasts app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the podcast series you'd like to mark an episode as played within from the My Podcasts section.
  3. Tap on the blue arrow next to the podcast title that you'd like to mark as played.
  4. Tap on the Mark as Played button.

How to mark an entire series of podcasts as played

  1. Launch the Podcasts app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the podcast series you'd like to mark an episode as played within from the My Podcasts section.
  3. Tap on the Settings button.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom and tap on the Mark All as Played button.

Fish win fights on strength of personality

Apr. 26, 2013 ? When predicting the outcome of a fight, the big guy doesn't always win suggests new research on fish. Scientists at the University of Exeter and Texas A&M University found that when fish fight over food, it is personality, rather than size, that determines whether they will be victorious. The findings suggest that when resources are in short supply personality traits such as aggression could be more important than strength when it comes to survival.

The study, published in the journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, found that small fish were able to do well in contests for food against larger fish provided they were aggressive. Regardless of their initial size, it was the fish that tended to have consistently aggressive behaviour -- or personalities -- that repeatedly won food and as a result put on weight.

Dr Alastair Wilson from Biosciences at the University of Exeter said: "We wondered if we were witnessing a form of Napoleon, or small man, syndrome. Certainly our study indicates that small fish with an aggressive personality are capable of defeating their larger, more passive counterparts when it comes to fights over food. The research suggests that personality can have far reaching implications for life and survival."

The sheepshead swordtail fish (Xiphophorus birchmanni) fish were placed in pairs in a fish tank, food was added and their behaviour was captured on film. The feeding contest trials were carried out with both male and female fish. The researchers found that while males regularly attacked their opponent to win the food, females were much less aggressive and rarely attacked.

In animals, personality is considered to be behaviour that is repeatedly observed under certain conditions. Major aspects of personality such as shyness or aggressiveness have previously been characterised and are thought to have important ecological significance. There is also evidence to suggest that certain aspects of personality can be inherited. Further work on whether winning food through aggression could ultimately improve reproductive success will shed light on the heritability of personality traits.

Bill Hancock, right, executive director of the Bowl Championship Series, introduces the new name - College Football Playoffs - and competition framework of what will replace the BCS in 2014 at a meeting of the football conference commissioners in Pasadena, Calif., Tuesday, April 23, 2013. He is joined onstage by, from left, commissioners Mike Slive of the Southeastern Conference, Britton Banowsky of Conference USA, Bob Bowlsby of the Big 12, and Larry Scott of the Pac-12. (AP Photo/Reed Saxon)

(AP) ? Now that the guys putting together the College Football Playoff have determined where the games will be played, there's only one major item left on the agenda ? and it just might be the most important piece.

Who is going to pick the teams that play for the national championship and how will they go about it?

"It's huge," Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said Wednesday. "Major change going from the BCS standing to a selection committee."

Scott and the other BCS conference commissioners ended Day 2 of their meetings at the home of the Rose Bowl by announcing that Cowboys Stadium will host the first championship game in the new postseason system, and that the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Chick-fil-A bowls will be part of the six-game semifinal rotation.

Arlington, Texas, edged Tampa, Fla., in the bidding to be the site of the first championship game in the playoff system that will replace the Bowl Championship Series.

"We couldn't be more excited about bringing college football's biggest game to Cowboys Stadium," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement. "Rest assured, we all pledge to do everything we can to make sure this game exceeds everyone's highest expectations."

The Rose, Orange (Miami) and Sugar (New Orleans) bowls were already part of the semifinal rotation.

The Rose and Sugar will host the first semifinals Jan. 1, 2015. The next season, the Cotton (Arlington) and Orange bowls will host the semifinals on New Year's Eve. The semis will be played at the Fiesta (Glendale, Ariz.) and Chick-fil-A (Atlanta) after the 2016 season.

In the years the bowls do not host a national semifinal they will stage a major, BCS-type game played on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. That means two days of huge college football triple-headers.

What teams will play in those games will be up to the still to be determined selection committee.

BCS executive director Bill Hancock said the selection committee has been much discussed over the last two days and will be a topic again on Thursday before the commissioners head home. But nothing has been decided.

"We had a quality conversation (Wednesday), we'll have a quality conversation (Thursday)," Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive said. "But we're a long way ... you have to think about composition, numbers, people, criteria, process. There's a lot to it."

The idea is for the committee to have 15 or 20 members, and for it to look something like the committee that selects the field for the NCAA basketball tournament. That selection committee is comprised of athletic directors and conference commissioners and picks 68 teams.

Because the scrutiny on this panel will be far greater, the commissioners are considering having both current and former administrators on the committee. Any appearance of bias will be difficult to overcome with the stakes so high.

"Transparency is something that's very important to us," Slive said.

The commissioners are also considering what metrics and guidelines the committee will be given to differentiate between the top teams, and whether the panel will produce rankings periodically throughout the season.

"To be decided," Scott said to most questions about the selection committee.

"We have time on our side," Slive said.

Hancock said he hoped a panel could be in place by this fall, so they'd be well prepared to go work when the 2014 season starts.

Velodyne vTrue

Velodyne is more known for its subwoofers than it is for making headphones, but the Velodyne vTrue takes the company's expertise in deep bass in a new direction. Velodyne refers to the $399.00 (direct) vTrue as a pair of "studio headphones," although we found them to be far too leaky to be considered for serious recording applications. In every other regard, they are solid, though, so we'll review them here as simply high-end, powerful headphones. In that regard, they perform quite well?if you love gobs and gobs of boosted bass and crisp, sculpted highs. Audio purists can probably stop reading now, but if you're looking for a powerful, bass-heavy headphone pair, the vTrue is a strong option.

Design
The vTrue headphones are strikingly designed, with an aluminum contour on the earcups and a brown padded leather headband and earpads. Everything from the precision-friendly headband slide adjuster to the deep blue padding over the 50mm drivers inside the earcups feels thoughtfully designed. The vTrue strikes out only on a comfort level?these headphones are bulky, and after a while, you're likely to feel some pressure on your scalp.

The audio cables are detachable, and split to connect to each earcup. One included cable has an inline remote and microphone designed for use with Apple iOS devices and all iPods 3rd-generation and up. Both cables are clothbound in deep blue and measure four feet in length.Velodyne vTrue inline

Call clarity through the inline mic is strong enough that your call partner will understand you, and you'll understand them just fine, but it's not excellent?the mic sounds a bit muffled at times, and we're also dealing with cellular fidelity.

Also included with the vTrue: a ?-inch adapter for larger headphone jacks and a black drawstring carrying pouch.

Performance
On tracks with deep, sub-bass content, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," the vTrue is able to show off a bit. Audiophiles seeking flat, accurate response should look elsewhere, as the vTrue is a bass-boosted powerhouse. At maximum volume, the vTrue sounds as if it is just about to distort, but never really reaches the breaking point?and these headphones get quite loud. At safer, more reasonable listening levels, the bass response is intense and clean.

Luckily, Velodyne has the good sense to add some serious mid-high and high frequency tweaking so the sound signature isn't a muddy, undefined mess. On Bill Callahan's "Drover," the vTrue graces his vocals with a nice treble edge which helps it stand front and center in the mix. This is important, because the boosted bass response arms the constant drumbeat with some serious low-end thunder, making it also stand out quite a bit. Without the sculpted treble, his vocals would get lost and the mix would be too focused on the low-mids and lows.

Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" benefits from the high frequency sculpting, as well?the kick drum loop has a nice punchy attack, while the sub-bass synth hits that sit beneath the loop in the mix are delivered with some serious throttle. The vocals in this dense mix stand out in the same way Callahan's do on his track?the crisp edge they get from the vTrue helps separate them from the powerful lows and mids.

Classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," can sound a tad too tweaked and sculpted. The highs are boosted, which occasionally makes the higher register strings and brass sound a bit too bright, but the lower register strings absorb the added bass response nicely. The large drum hits at the end of track sound a bit too bass-boosted, however?almost as if they are amplified instead occurring naturally in a concert hall.

In other words, these headphones don't offer a flat response in any sense?there's tons of bass, and lots of liberties are taken with the high-mids and highs, as well. The result is something bass lovers will enjoy and purists will probably want to avoid. If you're looking for headphones in the price range with a bit less boosting in the lows, the?Sennheiser Momentum?is a solid option and less bulky, while the TDK ST750 is a powerful pair that focuses more on the high-mids and highs.?If you like big bass, but the vTrue's price tag is too high, the?Denon Urban Raver AH-D320?offers a similar sound signature for a significantly lower price. And if it's a true studio headphone pair you seek, you can spend quite a bit less and still have top quality?Sennheiser's HD 280 Pro?is an excellent flat response option. The Velodyne True offers clean, bold performance with booming low-end, and it comes with two top-notch, detachable cables?if it were less expensive, it would get a higher rating.

New Microsoft Campaign Positions Company as Privacy Leader | Adweek

Microsoft is once again marketing its brand as the "good guy" privacy company. The new campaign, for Microsoft's Do Not Track browser, plugs right into consumer fears that their privacy is being compromised by companies who are tracking a consumer's every click and collecting information about them "even before birth." Control is the operative word in the campaign which began Monday and will run through the end of June on TV, in newspapers, online and out of home. Microsoft research released last January found that 45 percent of consumers said they feel they have little or no control over the personal information companies gather about them.

Huawei outlines plan to regain its share of European smartphone market

Huawei Device CMO Shao Yang shows off his Ascend Mate to journalists.

Last year, Huawei's Device Business Group set an ambitious goal of shipping 60 million smartphones, but managed only 32 million, keeping it out of IDC's top five smartphone vendors in 2012. That said, for Q4 that same year Huawei did finally break into top three, but it didn't change the fact that it had been a tough period for Huawei's smartphone division, especially for its CMO Shao Yang (pictured above with his 6.1-inch Ascend Mate). At the 2013 Huawei Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen yesterday, the exec was kind enough to share his side of the story about the hurdles his team faced last year -- the period when Huawei was transforming from an original design manufacturer (ODM) to serve others, to an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in order to build devices according to its own specifications.
