Ateneo Digital Brings Multilingual Digital Publishing to Latin America

Ateneo Digital logoAteneo Digital was one of three Montreal startups that was accepted to the Start-Up Chile incubator. So I thought it would be interesting to interview one of the founders, Miguel Angel Molina, about the company and why they?re making the move.

To-date we?ve had a few perspectives on Start-Up Chile including Naysawn Naderi?s take on why he?s going to Chile with his startup Art Sumo, and Ken Seville?s thoughts on the challenges he?s had as a participating startup (his company is CiviSide) in the program already.

So on to Ateneo Digital and Miguel Angel Molina?

NextMontreal: What is Ateneo Digital and when was it started?

Miguel: We?re working to become an online publisher and distributor that uses digital publishing technology to facilitate access to specialized academic and professional content. We?re going to be providing content via an online web browsing system and offline via the sale of mainly ePUB, Mobi, and PDF files, and enhanced file formats too (more rich media oriented). The idea is to get specialized content originating throughout the Americas and make it available worldwide in a creative, simple, user-friendly and engaging way. Ateneo started taking shape in my head somewhere around January, but Olivers and I teamed up in late February and started working together on it officially in March of this year (2011).

NextMontreal: Who are the founders and what are your backgrounds?

Miguel: Just Olivers and myself. We?ve known each other for years, since 1996, when I lived in Venezuela.

Olivers has the technical skills, covering telecommunications systems, web and app development, e-commerce development, and programming. His background?s quite interesting: among the first Web designers in Venezuela in 1996, he?s designed and implemented telecommunications infrastructure across the country for big-name mobile operators, and since 2010 is running his own technology venture offering web and app development, technology services, and consulting support for corporate clients in Venezuela. Olivers also has serious hardware and software expertise, making him a pretty balanced technology professional. He happens to be an electronics engineer from Venezuela?s Universidad Sim?n Bol?var, the country?s main technology school. One more thing about him (yes, it?s sounding like an Ode, but believe me, this one is very important) is that he?s creative and resilient, always finding solutions to problems in challenging landscapes. Venezuela is a VERY difficult country to operate out of. Resilience is KING.

On my end, the background is mainly on international management, strategic planning, and commercial development skills covering Lean practices, marketing, supplier/partner negotiations, and transportation and logistics engineering. These days, until we head to Chile I guess, I?m doing management consulting in these areas. I graduated Summa cum Laude from Delaware State University, earned my Master of Science in Transportation degree at MIT, and later worked in international business and management with some big names like Lufthansa and IATA (hence my connection to Montreal; IATA?s base). My work right now, along with Ateneo, is consulting, helping transportation, media and entertainment companies. I speak several languages too.

NextMontreal: Why did you start Ateneo Digital? What market opportunity did you see?

Miguel: We started Ateneo Digital out of need. In Venezuela, as across all Latin America, there?s a huge need for quality academic and professional knowledge. People there struggle all the time seeking the books/magazines/articles they want and need. It?s easier with the Internet and global supply chains these days, but you can?t compare it with life in North America and Western Europe. We see an opportunity here, and a huge one! Digital publishing is new in the industrialized world, and non-existent in Latin America, but it?s here to stay! All kinds of benefits emerge from digital publishing and online content distribution/consumption. The opportunities are just amazing. You see, Ateneo is at the crossroads of three significant economic activities: information technologies, publishing, and education. Each has it?s unique potential. Combined, the possibilities are endless. This digital publishing and content distribution of quality content market is just getting started ? not just in Latin America, but globally.

NextMontreal: Who are the competitors?

Miguel: Even though we?re touching three major sectors (IT, Digital Publishing and Education), and competitors are coming out from all three, I?ll limit things to the Digital Publishing realm. It?s very fragmented! We?ve got some big well-known names like Google, Amazon, and Project Gutenberg. There?s also more creative operations out there like Inkling and Flat World Knowledge. You also have tons of academic publishers (MIT Press, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, etc.), the big 6 publishers, and operations like Thomson Reuters, Lexis Nexis, etc. In all these cases though, they?re mostly limited to English speaking audiences. For Latin America, or a fully-multilingual player like ourselves, there?s a different mix. It?s only a handful of dedicated Spanish-speaking operations, the bigger publishing houses, and that?s about it. You?re talking about no more than 12 to 15 strong names and all they?re doing is digitizing and selling content. Nothing else too innovative.

NextMontreal: Can you provide some examples of the type of content you will provide on Ateneo Digital?

Miguel: We?ve been working with some authors already, creating text books, research papers, and a few white papers too. We?re also contemplating things that have more rich media (audio and video, though not really our key focus right now). Keep in mind that the content doesn?t have to be presented as a single book or title. There are many ways to package content, especially in the digital domain.

NextMontreal: Do you have partnerships with universities / professors ? is that where most of the content will come from?

Miguel: We?re working on it! And, yep, there?s a lot of content from these sources ? especially independent authors affiliated to education. Latin America (and the developing world in general) is filled with self-publishing academics.

NextMontreal: You recently joined Start-Up Chile ? why? What advantages do you see of the program?

Miguel: We?re from the Americas and for the Americas, so our goal is to be in every country across the continent. We can envision a regional presence being managed from Chile. Chile doesn?t produce that many academic books (Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru all create more content ? in that order). However, you could argue that this is because the country is so small when compared to the five major players Still, the country is advancing in other areas, and that?s just as important for us! Chile?s trade relations and economic output are among the best in the region. It?s institutions and IT infrastructure are sound. It?s a business friendly place. And it?s landscapes? Olivers and I both like the outdoors, a lot. As we said in our application: along with everything else about Chile, we like Penguins. More importantly, though, no other country in the region has such an interesting entrepreneurship initiative. The $40K has lots of appeal. But the resources they?re bringing together really caught our attention, especially since they understand the unique dynamics of Latin America.

NextMontreal: Had you tried to raise capital in Canada or no? If so, what was it like?

Miguel: Gee, that?s a really good question. Unfortunately, I?m not allowed to talk much about. Sorry. Let?s talk again about this in a few months if you don?t mind.

NextMontreal: What are your expectations for Start-Up Chile?

Miguel: We have lots of things we?d like to accomplish while taking part in Start-Up Chile, though the main goal is to have full time attention for our project. It?s tough right now for us, with Olivers and I working full time and the other team members chipping in on the sides. Six months of non-stop, fully focused, resource rich, and morally supported effort would do us GREAT! We?re particularly thrilled about the moral support from the people we?ll be working with. Latin America doesn?t have many entrepreneur-friendly environments. It?s so not like Montreal. Half the time you?re having to explain to people why you are taking this ?crazy? path of starting something from scratch and with little or no resources. Having lived in Montreal, and having team members from Montreal, I know first hand how different it can be! We?re seriously contemplating a full relocation to Montreal at some point, because the atmosphere is just great. But having found (and been accepted to) an environment that?s just as promising, and especially designed by people that understand our primary market/audience is amazing. Just remember, more than expectations about the program, it?s our motivation to take full advantage of what it offers.

NextMontreal: When the program is finished, will you be coming back to Montreal?

Miguel: Half the team is in Canada already (though somewhat in-between Toronto and Montreal right now ? but that?s temporary). If I can convince Olivers to put up with the -30C, we?ll definitely establish ourselves with a stronger presence there. Montreal is among the best places in North America, and the French speaking community is also very important to us. Multi-cultural dialogue across the Americas, without the French-speaking community would be incomplete! So, in short, we intend on having Ateneo in Montreal again at some point ? and I hope that it?s soon.

NextMontreal: When are you launching?

Miguel: We?re looking at sometime around the first quarter of 2012, no later than early March. We?ve progressed a lot in these first 6 months of existence, and we don?t anticipate any pivots to our efforts really, just a few adjustments here and there. But you never know. You plan life at your desk, and then go outside and just live it!

Diabetes Signs You Must Check Out | Fitness and Health Tips Today

Almost one third of people with diabetes don?t know they?ve it. The symptoms seem so harmless, like symptoms of just getting older. This article goes into the different types of diabetes and some of the common symptoms of each to help you understand diabetes a little better.

In this article we?ll go over the three main types of diabetes. They are Type 1, Type 2, Gestational diabetes.

<b>Type 1 Diabetes</b>

This type of diabetic issues has also been called insulin-dependent and immune-mediated diabetic issues. It occurs when your body cannot produce insulin. The immune system attacks insulin producing cells in the pancreas. This type of diabetic issues is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously referred to as juvenile diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes boosts the risk of other severe complications such as heart disease, nerve damage, blindness, and renal system damage.

Some of the symptoms consist of increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss even with increased urge for food, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and absence of menstruation

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is the most common kind that fails to be diagnosed. It progress slowly and results in symptoms such as skin infections, poor healing, kidney problems, as well as vision problems. It is ordinary that neither these problems nor the diabetes is actually diagnosed after years of mild symptoms.

The problem is usually that people have no severe symptoms and do not seek medical care at all. They simply think of the symptoms as simply getting older. For this reason it is important to obtain regularly tested for diabetic issues in the most common age group (over 40?s). Less commonly a doctor may treat other diseases, without realizing to test for diabetic issues.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes occurs during a woman?s pregnancy. Women that are pregnant who have never had diabetic issues before but have high blood sugar levels during pregnancy have been demonstrated to have it. It affects 4 percent of all women during pregnancy.

Symptoms include Increased desire Increased urination Weight loss in spite of increased appetite Fatigue Nausea or vomiting and vomiting Frequent infections including those of the bladder, vagina, and skin Blurred vision.

Gestational diabetes can be missed in pregnancy. It usually starts with mild symptoms that often can be attributed to other things. It?s important to get tested during pregnancy because the high blood sugar from gestational diabetes can do harm to the infant and sometimes lead to other complications.

Even if you?re not pregnant, you should make it a priority to get tested. Many women have gestational diabetes and think about their symptoms as being typical during pregnancy. You never know, maybe it is, but it?s always a good idea to obtain tested.

If you?re having the symptoms for diabetes, it?s vital that you see your doctor. Even if you believe it?s absolutely nothing. It?s better to be safe compared to sorry. More can be study at http://diabetes-info.org/.

DeMarco: Unlikely turnaround? Don't tell D-backs

Gibson focused on playoffs in spring, put culture in place to make it happen

Image: GibsonGetty Images

Arizona manager Kirk Gibson says his surprising team isn't done yet. "We're a pretty damn good team; I've got news for you.''

OPINION

By Tony DeMarco

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 9:18 p.m. ET Sept. 28, 2011

Tony DeMarco

Ask anybody who watched the Arizona Diamondbacks this spring, and they'll tell you that other than their new, state-of-the-art Salt River Fields facility, little appeared to be going right.

The Diamondbacks couldn't catch the ball, didn't prevent enough runs and finished with the worst record in the Cactus League at 12-25 ? not exactly the spring you're looking for coming off back-to-back 90-plus-loss seasons.

So imagine club president Derrick Hall's surprise when manager Kirk Gibson talked to him one spring training day about, 'the things we have to do to get to the playoffs.'

"I thought, 'boy, you're crazy,''' Hall recalled during the Diamondbacks' raucous NL West-clinching celebration. "Gibby displayed a surprising level of confidence.''

Or on another occasion this spring, when general manager Kevin Towers told Hall, 'we're going to win 90 games this season.'

"I said, 'really?''' Hall said. "Nobody gave us a shot, but that's how we're built ? with character. It's been magical. One word ? magical.''

It all starts with Gibson, of course. He's a virtual certainty for NL Manager of the Year after a worst-to-first turnaround matched only twice previously ? by the 1999 Diamondbacks and the 1991 Atlanta Braves.

"He is one of most focused managers I've ever had,'' Towers said. "From the minute he steps in this clubhouse until the minute he leaves, it's all baseball. The guy is a winner. He was a winner as a player, and now he's proven he's a winner as a manager.''

But for everything that has gone right for Gibson and the Diamondbacks this season, it's easy to forget that he entered it with question marks attached, too. After all, the team played to virtually the same .400 winning percentage after Gibson was elevated from bench coach to replace A.J. Hinch last July 1.

But Gibson promised things would change once the interim title was removed, and that was evident in the spring ? if not in the win column. To say Gibson is a stickler for preparation and looking for every competitive edge is like saying he was a bit intense as a player. The same goes for one of the game's best coaching staffs.

The Diamondbacks drilled incessantly each spring morning on holding runners, taking the extra base, pitchers' batting skills, etc. ? to the point that Towers recently said players might have been a bit worn out for the Cactus League games.

But it wasn't until mid-May ? when the Diamondbacks were struggling along at 15-22 ? that things began to click with a 15-2 run that included winning streaks of six and seven games.

"People thought Gibby maybe was a bit crazy in spring training, with all the stuff he was making us do,'' closer J.J. Putz said. "But after that stretch in May, that's when we started gaining our identity as a team. Guys thought, you know what? Maybe he isn't crazy. He does know what he's doing.''

And that's when a long list of positive developments began to mount, led by Charles Nagy's pitching staff:

  • Putz and setup man David Hernandez ? both Towers' off-season acquisitions ? anchoring the back of the bullpen, a spot so weak in 2010 that the Diamondbacks posted one of the worst-ever bullpen ERAs in the modern era.
  • Cy Young Award candidate Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson stepping to the front of the rotation on their way to 21- and 16-win seasons and 200-plus innings ? with solid support from Joe Saunders, who shook off the disappointment of being traded from the Angels in July 2010 to go 12-12-3.58 and also cross the 200-inning plateau.

"The bullpen doesn't matter if the starting rotation doesn't go deep (in games),'' Putz said. "It doesn't allow Gibby to match up the way he'd like to with the bullpen guys. We felt that if our starters could keep us in games, we had a chance to be a pretty good club. We knew our offense could bang the ball around a little bit.''

  • Justin Upton's ascent to stardom, aided by the wisdom of hitting instructor Don Baylor. Right behind Upton in the order, All-Star catcher Miguel Montero staying healthy all season, improving his throwing and fulfilling offensive promise with a .282-18-86 stat line.
  • The career year of journeyman Ryan Roberts, leading underrated but valued contributions including Gerardo Parra's left-field defense and .295 average, Willie Bloomquist's versatility and Micah Owings' 7-0-3.16 season as a middle reliever/spot starter.
  • Josh Collmenter, the rookie with the unconventional delivery honed when he threw tomahawks as a kid, grabbing the No. 4 rotation spot and stabilizing what had been an early-season problem area.
  • Paul Goldschmidt's middle-of-the-lineup production after his Aug. 1 recall ? another key rookie contributor who ended a revolving-door first base situation.

The winning continued ? escalated, actually ? even after star shortstop Stephen Drew went down in late-July with a fractured leg.

Helped by Towers' in-season acquisitions of reliever Brad Ziegler, second baseman Aaron Hill and defensive whiz infielder John McDonald, the Diamondbacks went on a 16-3 run from Aug. 26 to Sept. 9 to leave the defending World Series-champion Giants in their wake.

"I really think we have a special team,'' Kennedy said. "We've taken on the character of our manager and coaching staff. We think we can keep going ? why not? We've (surprised) all year.''

Added Gibson: "A lot of people didn't expect us to get here. But you have to become your own 'experts'. If you continue to push, you've got a shot. If you take your hat out of the ring, you've got no shot.

"We had a vision, and we stuck with it. We're in good position now to go further. We're a pretty damn good team; I've got news for you.''

Pre 3 for AT&amp;T review

This is a review of a phone that was never actually released to the public on AT&T. Despite the unfortunateness of the prior statement, we felt obligated to run this device through the wringer as a final farewell to Palm, the Pre line and webOS on consumer devices.

Man, what a weird, labyrinthine life this device has had. European carriers didn't even want the Pre 2, and for whatever reason, those folks were the only ones to even get the Pre 3. Excluding this guy, of course. This guy, as you've probably gleaned, is one of only a handful of AT&T Pre 3 handsets to make it out of the factory unscathed, and we couldn't be happier to be putting it through the paces. Well... we could be happier, but that would require Meg Whitman undoing Leo's departing shot through the webOS heart.

All that aside, it's been a strange few days with the final webOS-based phone, and in a sense, the final phone that'll ever have Palm's DNA running through its circuitry. Not even two months ago, HP was telling developers to get their Pre 3 app submissions in for approval, and a mere four weeks ago, the same company affirmed that this very phone wouldn't ever arrive on US shores. You know, despite that whole "being announced for AT&T" thing. Turns out, a few of those units actually did pass the requisite QA tests, and if you've got the right connections (or a quick enough trigger finger on eBay), you too can land yourself what'll undoubtedly go down as one of the most highly sought after pieces of Palm / webOS history. But should you? Find out after the break.

EU Court: AB InBev, Budvar Can Both Use Budweiser Trademark ...

Beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev NV (BUD) and smaller Czech rival Budejovicky Budvar can both use ?Budweiser? as a trademark in the U.K., Europe?s highest court ruled Thursday, in the latest round of a long-running feud over the rights to the Budweiser name.

?United Kingdom consumers are well aware of the difference between Budvar?s beers and those of Anheuser-Busch,? the Luxembourg-based Court of Justice said in a statement after the ruling.

The companies have both used ?Budweiser? as a brand name for many years and both registered the name as a trademark in 2000.

However, just a day ahead of the expiry of a five-year time limit, Anheuser-Busch challenged Budvar?s mark as invalid, on the grounds that ? despite both marks being registered on the same day ? Anheuser-Busch had filed its application earlier.

The court said Wednesday that a later-registered trademark can be declared invalid only if it alters, or could alter, the earlier mark?s effectiveness in guaranteeing ?to consumers the origin of the goods covered by it.?

But in this case, it said, Anheuser-Busch and Budvar ?had each marketed their beers in the U.K. using the sign ?Budweiser? or a trademark including that sign for almost 30 years prior to registration.? It added that ?both of those companies have from the beginning used their Budweiser trademarks in good faith.?

The case still needs to be finalized by a British court, based on the EU court?s judgment.

The state-owned Czech brewer is engaged in a global intellectual property battle over the ?Budweiser? and ?Bud? trademarks and appellations of origin with Anheuser-Busch Inc., now part of Belgian brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev.

Legal battles involving Budvar and Anheuser-Busch have been ongoing for a century, intensifying since the end of the Czech communist government when Budvar?s exports grew substantially. In the U.K. however, the dispute only became an issue in the late 1970s, when Anheuser-Busch?s Budweiser beer became widely available in the country.

A case over rights to the ?Bud? trademark in Europe is still under consideration at a lower European court, the General Court.

Lincoln Park: RedEye &#39;Hoods - Second Chance Photos aims to give ...

Award-winning photographer Seth Casteel has basically devoted his life to photographing pets, and through his work as one of the most published pet photographers in the world he?s mingling with celebrity owners including Ellen DeGeneres, Amy Smart, Denise Richards, Perez Hilton, the cast of ?Twilight? and the cast of ?Glee.? However, Casteel also has a strong philanthropic streak, which led him to create Second Chance Photos. Based in Wicker Park but now working all over the city of Chicago, his aim is to take shelter animals that can be ?scared, dirty and disoriented? and take photographs that will hopefully help place them in new homes. A busy guy, who?s been featured on ?Extra,? MSNBC, ?Jeopardy!? and PerezHilton.com, among others, RedEye interviewed Casteel about his work in Chicago. Also, check out some of Casteel?s work in the gallery above.

How long have you been doing pet photography and why were you drawn to it?

I have been a pet photographer for four years and have loved every second! I love animals and I love photography, so this career makes perfect sense. I started out volunteering as a photographer at a local animal shelter and the ?job? part of it came along later.

Explain how you think Second Chance photos can help pets.

Homeless pets have no voice, so we must help them. Second Chance Photos believes every homeless pet should be represented with a positive, professional photograph, offering a glimpse into their unique personality in hopes to make a connection with potential adopters. Our mission is to provide shelter staff and volunteers with the resources to successfully photograph shelter pets, aiding in giving them the second chance they deserve. Check out SecondChancePhotos.org for more information.

In your opinion what can a dog or cat add to one?s life?

Dogs and cats are here to brighten our lives and remind us about what is truly important. And we enhance their lives just as much as they enhance ours.

You?ve been featured by several sites as a ?celebrity pet photographer.? Any interesting celebrity-pet related stories?

Sure! Two years ago I had a photo shoot with Amy Smart and her dog, Oscar. The photo shoot was so much fun and the photos turned out great, but I got myself into a bit of trouble with the Beverly Hills Police. Amy?s dog loves to stick his head out the window to feel the breeze, so I thought that would make a fantastic picture. I had Amy drive through Beverly Hills with Oscar looking out the window and I ran along side them, camera in hand. apparently this looked dangerous to the local authorities, so we got pulled over. I thought I was going to be charged with ?reckless pet photography,? but Amy explained the situation and we were free to go.

Why did you choose the Wicker Park neighborhood in Chicago to set up shop for Second Chance?

I am currently living in Chicago and am volunteering with several organizations here, but Second Chance Photos is helping pets all over the country. Chicago, like every city in the United States, has homeless pets, and they need our help. If you love animals, considering volunteering at your local shelter or rescue. You will make a huge difference.

Do you think Wicker is an especially pet-friendly neighborhood? What about the city of Chicago?

I?ve been working with pets in cities around the world and can say that Chicago is one of the most pet-friendly cities I?ve seen.

Do you have a pet?

Nala, the mini-labradoodle. She is a pound puppy I rescued from a California animal shelter a few years ago. She is a wonderful dog! I probably have 10,000 photos of her.

Health And Fitness | Back Pain :: By Jon Bjarnason | BharatBhasha ...

When most people think of reasons for going to the Chiropractor they think of back pain and rightfully so. Back pain affects more than 80% of Americans sometime in their life. Back pain also accounts for more sick days than any other condition. Most likely at one time or another in your life you too will have back pain. But what causes it and how do we treat it? Then, when you feel ready to take care of it where can you go to get rid of the problem? All these questions have answers. Depending on your approach to help, the right solution might not only get your out of pain, but might also save you money and restore some piece of mind.

Your Back!

The back is a complex structure of bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and other tissues. It is broken up into two sections: Thoracic and Lumbar spine. The spine's duties include protecting the nervous system. The central nervous system or CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system or PNS consists of all the nerves the branch of off the the central nervous system. The spinal joints also provide entrance and existing points for the PNS. Spacing between the joints is provided by the Intervertebral discs. The bony structure, the assortment of soft tissue, and the cushioning discs are all vital. All parts move together in concert, depending on each other to do their part. When one part of this intricate structure misfires or is damaged it will lead to certain pain patterns that distinguish themselves from other problems. By correctly identifying the source of the problem , a correct treatment can be provided.

What causes back pain and how do we treat it?

&bull; The first element to check is the structure. The 17 bones of the back form a distinct shape with an upper posterior curve and a lower anterior curve. Each union of two bones is called a joint. If altered or lost, this could have severe affects on spinal health. Each joint maintains a certain amount of motion. When allotted motion is not present the joint is now restricted or 'subluxated'. This subluxation can irritate the local nerve roots. Irritated or chaffed nerve roots can lead to pain, inflammation, and other problems. On a more complex scale, scoliosis is a common condition that affects the whole length of the spine. Scoliosis and other conditions are can be most accurately diagnosed via X-Ray analysis. If not addressed early on in life it could lead to irregular curves and abnormal structure. Weather an individual joint dysfunction or more complex scoliosis issues, joint misalignment is addressed with the chiropractic adjustment. The adjustment restores normal motion to the joints of the back and helps remove the pain.

&bull; The second aspect of the spine to check are the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These three parts work together to hold the soft tissue of the spine to the bones, move the bones, and hold the bones to each other. Each is comprised of smaller tissues that when stressed can rip or tear. These are called sprain-strain injuries. When this happens the body will react by causing pain, inflammation, and spasming in these areas. These symptoms, like the joint restriction, can irritate and interfere with the local nerves and nerve roots. This is a common cause of pain for athletes and those stressing their bodies in work or at play. It's victims range from stay-at-home mothers to farmers and field workers. In the case of tissue damage the body will heal. What should be avoided is incorrect healing of those damaged tissues. Controlling the inflammation and pain with such therapies as cold packs and interfertial currents will help the body heal correctly. Combining these treatments with the adjustment of the joints near those tissues will give the body its best change to heal properly.

&bull; The third cause of your back pain could very well be neither of the prior two, but could be related to the intervertebral discs. The discs are the shock absorbers of the spine. They provide a cushion for all the up and down forces the body faces each day. They are comprised of fibrous outer layer and gelatinous inner layer. They should be thick and full of water-like inner materials. When they begin to degenerate they thin down and become brittle. When this first stage of degeneration occurs the discs become much more likely to herniate or bulge. If and when they do, they will begin to push outwards and backwards on the spinal nerves themselves and cause radiating and burning pain to shoot down the legs. This pain can come on at an instant and remain constant for days, weeks, and even years if not addressed. The best way to treat this type of back pain is spinal decompression therapy (S. D. T.). Spinal decompression therapy is scientifically proven to help restore disc height and reduce herniation. Decompression therapy will remove the pressure on the nerves by extracting the bulging forces from the disc. Combined with the chiropractic adjustment, S.D.T. can restore normal function to discs and their accompanying joint structures.

Who can treat my back pain?

Doctors of Chiropractic are experts in the cause and the treatment of neuro-musculo-skeletal diseases. Their graduate education consists of a core curriculum of the basic sciences like a medical doctor: physiology, anatomy, radiology, and embryology. As they continue their courses become more complex: pathophysiology, physical diagnosis, advanced radiology, clinical nutrition, and bone pathology. All the while they spend hundreds of hours in technique classes learning how to correctly perform a variety of chiropractic adjustment techniques. The difference in the Medical Doctors curriculum and that of a Chiropractor is seen in the latter years. Medical doctors focus their studies on medicine whereas Chiropractors spend their time focusing on mastering their skills as hands on manual adjusters of the spine. Before they can graduate, they must complete a clinical internship. During this internship they are overseen by doctors of chiropractic who teach them in a clinical setting. All interns must meet hourly and treatment requirements before graduating. The education received by a Doctor of Chiropractic is thorough and involved. Continued education is mandated by each state that your chiropractor works in. This education helps keep the doctors up to speed on the latest research and techniques to better perform his responsibilities as a health care provider.

We have so many choices these days in the health care world. The medical field offers its strengths, but it does not have all the answers to your problems. Chiropractic is a safe and effective treatment for back pain and many other ailments. If you or someone you know is suffering, make the decision today. Find a chiropractor that can restore you and your loved ones back to health.

Europe crisis shadows meeting of finance officials - CBS ...

WASHINGTON ? The most perilous time for Europe since its emergence from World War II will form the backdrop this week as finance officials meet to confront a debt crisis that threatens the global economy.

Investors and analysts are skeptical that the talks in Washington will yield any breakthroughs that would restore confidence in Europe's financial system.

For Christine Lagarde, who took over as head of the International Monetary Fund in June, the crisis poses a tough first test. Lagarde has warned that without bold and collective action, the world's major economies risk slipping back into recession.

Those concerns were underscored Tuesday when the IMF downgraded its outlook for the global economy, the United States and Europe for this year and 2012. It said Europe's debt troubles and a persistent slowdown in the United States were mainly to blame for the gloomier forecast.

The IMF's chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, warned that the global economy had entered a "dangerous new phase." Investors have grown more skeptical about the ability of many countries to manage their debt, Blanchard suggested.

Those concerns are centered, in particular, on Greece. That nation could default on its debt next month unless its receives a $10.9 billion installment from a bailout fund managed by the European Central Bank, the European Commission and the IMF.

Greek officials are trying to convince officials who manage the bailout that it's doing all it can to meet budget targets that require it to shrink government spending.

Since May 2010, Greece has depended on a $150 billion rescue fund set up by other countries in the 17-nation group that uses the euro currency and by the IMF. Without the next installment of that support, Greece has only enough money to last through mid-October.

A default by Greece could destabilize other financially troubled European countries, such as Portugal, Ireland, Spain and Italy. It would also deal a blow to many European banks, which are large holders of Greek government bonds.

Last week, Moody's downgraded the credit ratings of two large French banks. Worries about Europe's debt troubles have fanned volatility in global financial markets in recent weeks.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has made two trips to Europe this month to discuss solutions to the crisis. His trips included the first by a U.S. Treasury secretary to a meeting of European finance officials.

At that session in Poland last Friday, Geithner discussed programs that the United States used to confront its own financial crisis in 2008 and 2009 and pushed for a stronger commitment by European countries.

"Markets don't respond well if you have the threat of cascading defaults," Geithner said in an interview Monday on PBS's "Nightly Business Report. "The basic thing that governments have to do is remove that catastrophic risk."

Geithner's trip to Poland was an effort to nudge Europe toward a lasting solution to its debt problems, which have endured for nearly two years. But his remarks evoked grumbling, which some critics said amounted to lecturing.

Austria's Finance Minister Maria Fekter criticized some of Geithner's policy prescriptions. She said America's economic performance was in some ways worse than that of the 17 countries in the euro zone.

Europe is expected to face further outside pressure when finance officials of the Group of 20 nations meet for a working dinner Thursday night and talks on development issues Friday. The Group of 20 includes traditional economic powers and emerging economies such as China, Brazil and India.

Those discussions will be a prelude to the annual meetings of the 187-nation IMF and its sister lending institution, the World Bank, on Friday and Saturday.

Some reports have suggested that Europe could be rescued if countries with bulging trade surpluses such as China recycled some of that money into the purchase of European government debt. But World Bank President Robert Zoellick cautioned against thinking that any "silver bullet" would resolve Europe's crisis.

Zoellick said there would be opposition within China, with its still-low per-capita incomes, to rescuing Europe. "I just don't think that is going to happen," he told reporters this week.

Lagarde, a former French finance minister, succeeded Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who stepped down in May to fight charges of attempted rape that were later dismissed. In a speech previewing this week's talks, Lagarde praised Obama's new job-creation plan. Still, she said it should coincide with long-term efforts to control government spending.

Lagarde said European nations with heavy debt burdens must also get control of government spending. And she said European banks need to boost their capital reserves to prepare for potential loan defaults ? an issue that the IMF's new economic forecast also raised.

In the end, analysts expect this week's meetings to produce little progress beyond the usual joint statements in which major economies pledge closer cooperation to fight the global slowdown but withhold any major financial commitments.

"Every major economy, including the United States and European countries, are facing a lot of political uncertainty at the moment," said Eswar Prasad, an economist at Cornell University. "That uncertainty is preventing them from making a concerted effort to resolve their financial problems."

I was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure a couple of years ago with a 50/50 chance of making it another ten years. My height is 5?10 and weight 272 lbs. In addition to the above ailments, I also have edema, high blood pressure, psoriasis, carpel tunnel and sleep apnea.

Diseases of the heart usually do not just appear overnight. It takes many years and decades of tobacco, alcohol, bad diet and lack of exercise. Artery blockage can be extremely advanced before one might know they have a problem. It sneaks up on you and when you least suspect it, you have a heart attack. My condition has been getting progressively worse to the point where it is quite a task to go from my basement to the main floor. Physical labor is out of the question now.

I TRIED THIS BEFORE.
Last year I attempted to lose a lot of weight through a process known as Water Fasting. I had done a lot of research on the topic through the Internet and books that I bought, and it felt like it was the right thing for me to do to improve my health. I started at about 265 lbs and got down to 230 lbs in a period of 21 days. But then I quit due to what I later found out was a cleansing reaction. In that 21 days my blood pressure normalized and I quit taking my Coversyl medication. I was taking longer and longer walks, and I could even jog a short distance. This convinced me that I was on the right track but I needed to do some more research before starting another Fast. That was the summer of 2010.

By now you are asking how a Water Fast can benefit someone who has Heart Disease. Well first of all, fasting is proven to reduce blood pressure very rapidly and effectively. Notes from my fast last year indicate I was consistently around 125-130/85 from an average of 165/95, so I know the effects on blood pressure, and I am confident that if I had continued on I would have seen further improvement. In addition, it would appear that Fasting may significantly reduce the amount of plaque that lines the blood vessels which would result in more oxygen and blood to circulate and lessen the workload on the Heart. In a study published in Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, June 2001, 174 patients did a fast and all participants experienced a dramatic drop in blood pressure. The fast lasted only 10 to 11 days and the average drop in blood pressure was 37/13 mm Hg. Those with stage 3 hypertension (180/110+) experienced an average drop of 60/17 mm Hg. No other method to reduce blood pressure has ever shown such dramatic results.

THIS TIME, SUCCESS!
Because of the results I achieved last year on my fast I have decided to start another fast. The purpose being to completely normalize my blood pressure, rid myself of the edema and gout along with a few other health related issues I am dealing with. The Fast will carry on until my hunger returns, which I suspect may be anywhere from 40 to 50 days. I would love to lose 80 to 100 lbs which would take me down to about 195 lbs. This time I will be drinking Medical grade Alkaline Ionized Water to help with the cleansing reactions which stopped my fast in 2010. I will be providing stats, commentary, pictures and video on a regular basis. I invite you to follow my progress at my blog.
