2012 London Olympics Blog: Video: Anatomy of a U.S. Olympic Gold Medal Race

?A lifetime dream realized? is how Peter Cipollone, the coxswain for the men?s eight team that won the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics, describes the historic victory that ended a 40-year Olympic medal drought for the United States men?s rowing team.

Cipollone, who retired in 2004 after 10 years on the national team, was recently elected chairman of the board for USA Rowing. As chairman, he plans to lead discussions and make decisions to ensure that the United States program is properly constructed and financed so that athletes who choose to dedicate their lives to rowing have every opportunity to be successful.

In a recent interview, Cipollone spoke about strategies to expand rowing in America, including an initiative called America Rows, which focuses on young people in communities that have not traditionally been served by rowing. It exposes young people to rowing while teaching teamwork and discipline, and provides collegiate opportunities and scholarships.

After their 2000 Olympic collapse, when they were the prohibitive favorite, the men came into Athens feeling good but were ?at best a dark horse,? Cipollone said. They were confident with their fast times at home but had not done much international racing that year.

?We were having fun, and it?s something you can?t underestimate when you?re at the Olympics,? Cipollone said. ?If everybody is loose and relaxed and having a good time, that has a profound effect on your ability to perform on race day.?

Having shattered the world record by almost three seconds in the preliminary race leading up to the final, Cipollone said: ?If you had asked me to write the story of how it goes, it went better than anything I would ever dared write or dream of. We got away from everybody so early and so quickly that it became the dream race. And when that boat crossed the finish line first, it felt like the greatest thing that?s ever happened.?

All the world's quakes since 1898 mapped

If you've ever wondered where ? and why ? earthquakes happen the most, look no further than a new map, which plots more than a century's worth of nearly every recorded earthquake strong enough to at least rattle the bookshelves.

The map shows earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater since 1898; each is marked in a lightning-bug hue that glows brighter with increasing magnitude.

The overall effect is both beautiful and arresting, revealing the silhouettes of Earth's tectonic boundaries in stark, luminous swarms of color.

The map's maker, John Nelson, the user experience and mapping manager for IDV Solutions, a data visualization company, said the project offered several surprises.

"First, I was surprised by the sheer amount of earthquakes that have been recorded," Nelson told OurAmazingPlanet. "It's almost like you could walk from Seattle to Wellington (New Zealand) if these things were floating in the ocean, and I wouldn't have expected that."

In all, 203,186 earthquakes are marked on the map, which is current through 2003. And it reveals the story of plate tectonics itself.

Earthquake makers
The long volcanic seams where Earth's crust is born appear as faint, snaking lines cutting through the world's oceans. The earthquakes along these so-called spreading centers tend to be rather mild. The best studied spreading center, called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, bisects the Atlantic Ocean, on the right side of the image.

Its Pacific counterpart wanders along the eastern edge of the Pacific Ocean, cutting a wide swath offshore of South America. Another spreading center makes a jog though the Indian Ocean and up through the Red Sea.

But one glance at the map shows that the real earthquake action is elsewhere. [ 7 Ways the Earth Changes in the Blink of an Eye ]

Subduction zones, the places where tectonic plates overlap and one is forced to dive deep beneath the other and into the Earth's crushing interior ? a process that generates the biggest earthquakes on the planet ? stand out like a Vegas light show.

Nelson said this concept hit home particularly for the Ring of Fire, the vast line of subduction zones around the northern and western edge of the Pacific Ocean.

"I have a general sense of where it is, and a notion of plate tectonics, but when I first pulled the data in and started painting it in geographically, it was magnificent," Nelson said. "I was awestruck at how rigid those bands of earthquake activity really are."

    1. Weird life preserved ... Pompeii-style

    2. Maya text cites 2012 as end of calendar cycle
    3. Why supermarket tomatoes taste lousy
    4. Should we have cloned Lonesome George?

That realization prompted one big decision about the map's design, Nelson said. Unlike many maps made in the United States, this one is centered over the Pacific Ocean. "That looked like where the magic was happening," Nelson said. California, a spot rattled by quakes where faults jolt horizontally, also shines brightly.

Teaching tool
There are undoubtedly many earthquakes missing, given the dramatic change in scope and accuracy of seismological instruments from 1898 to the present day. Nelson said he saw a huge jump in the volume of data from the 1960s forward. Yet even without the complete catalog of earthquakes, the map provides a striking visual reference ? even though none of the data are new.

All the earthquake information and maps are freely available on the Internet courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey, university and state partners in California, and NASA.

"There's nothing new about plotting earthquakes," Nelson said. "It's just presenting it in an interesting way."

And although he was modest about his own role as a designer, Nelson emphasized the value of design in making data more engaging. The project was a follow-up to a recent map of more than 50 years of tornado tracks across the United States; he said both maps are designed to get people more interested in the larger phenomena behind them. "To get them to start asking questions," Nelson said.

In short, a colorful map will grab people more than an Excel spreadsheet, even when both contain the same information.

"It seems almost superficial, but it's true," Nelson said. "If something is treated with thoughtful design, then it becomes better."

(AP) ? Struggling BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. revealed Thursday that its business is crumbling faster than thought.

The Canadian company posted worse results for its latest quarter than analysts had expected. It's cutting 5,000 jobs and delaying the launch of its new phone operating system, BlackBerry 10, until after the holiday shopping season.

After several delays, the first phone with BlackBerry 10 was expected later this year. It will be delayed even longer, to the first quarter of next year, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said.

The delay comes as North Americans are abandoning BlackBerrys for iPhones and Android phones. Analysts have long said the new BlackBerrys will come out too late to reverse RIM's fortunes. RIM was pinning its hope on the new BlackBerry 10 system, which is meant to offer the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now demand.

Now it will come out months after a new iPhone is expected to be released. Current and previous iPhones have made the BlackBerry look ancient.

The jobs cuts are part of a previously announced initiative to cut $1 billion in annual costs this year. They represent about 30 percent of RIM's workforce, which is currently at 16,500.

"It is necessary to change the scale and refocus the company," Heins said on a conference call with analysts.

"I fully understand the impact a workforce reduction of this size has on our employees and the communities in which we operate. I assure you that we wouldn't move forward with a change of this size if we didn't think it was critical for our future."

RIM shares plunged $1.38, or 15 percent, to $7.75 in extended trading, after the release of the results. If they hold that level into regular trading Friday, they will set a new nine-year low.

Heins acknowledged that he delivered "a lot of tough news."

"This was a challenging quarter for the company on many fronts," he said. "And I am not satisfied with the financial performance we are reporting today."

Heins had previously vowed to do everything he could to release BlackBerry 10 this year but he said Thursday that the timetable simply wasn't realistic. He said RIM's top priority remains a successful launch of the new BlackBerrys.

"I will not deliver a product to the market that is not ready to meet the needs of our customers," he said. "There will be no compromise on this issue."

He said the company will release fewer models than in the past. He also said RIM will launch a BlackBerry 10 model with a physical keyboard close to the launch of the touch-screen model. RIM earlier said it would come out with a touch-screen model first, but it didn't say when it would make one with a physical keyboard, a feature that many people stay with BlackBerrys for.

RIM previously said it hired a team of bankers to help it weigh its options as it loses market share and its business erodes. Heins said they continue to study those options, but he declined to share those options and said the board would have to approve any changes.

RIM lost $518 million, or 99 cents a share, in its fiscal first quarter, which ended June 2. This compares with a profit of $695 million, or $1.33 per share, a year ago.

Excluding impairment charges, the latest loss was 37 cents per share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting a loss of 3 cents.

Revenue fell 43 percent to $2.8 billion, well below analyst expectations at $3.1 billion.

RIM said it shipped just 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones in the quarter, down 41 percent from 13.2 million a year earlier.

Heins said the company is expecting the next several quarters to be "very challenging." He said RIM is in the midst of a platform transition and faces an increasingly competitive environment. Research firm IDC says BlackBerrys U.S. market share has plummeted from 41.1 percent in 2007 to 3.6 percent in first three months of 2012.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, said the results and news of a BlackBerry 10 delay is far worse than the horrible news he had already expected.

"When a technology gets old, it's not a slow fade. It's a sharp cliff," Gillis said.

"There is very little market for old technology."

Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord, called the BlackBerry 10 delay dire and problematic in a rapidly changing technology sector.

"The biggest disappointment is the delay of the BlackBerry 10," he said. "It's extremely challenging for them to turn around the business when their new smartphone is launching that late."

Learn to approach each prospect with this question: What is the most return that the company can receive from this opportunity?

Participants will leave this session with a deep understanding of how to craft a thoughtful and creative communications plan that is strategic and right-sized for any organization.

This session will show you how to identify and build the key components of your visibility plan including:

Google's Nexus 7 cover turns on the Play store, will set you back $20

Not surprisingly, Google will have some accessories for its new Nexus 7 tablet, including a cover that also leaked out a bit early though Google Play (and spotted by MoDaCo's Paul O'Brien). As you can see, it will cover both the front and back of the device, and set you back a fairly reasonable $20. Available at least in dark grey, it has a matte (seemingly textured) finish, and provides access to both the tablet's headphone jacket and charging port.

commercial outdoor power equipment - Commercial Power ...

When used properly, commercial sprayers can help groundskeepers maintain their properties more efficiently. Sprayers can hold various solutions and chemicals to control pests, plant growth, bacteria and other elements that affect a property's landscaping. When solutions are applied with a sprayer wand, this ensures even application which can be regulated by the person using the equipment.

Solutions There is a variety of chemicals and solutions that can be applied to any property. The application of pesticides to destroy insects and molds or fungi on plants is important to properties where appearance and health of plant materials is paramount. For example, shrubbery that is chewed up by moths, insects and other bugs can be salvaged with organic and chemical applications. Spreading them evenly in specific areas can prevent an additional problem or save the plant from dying. Spraying grass, plants, trees or surfaces can also act as an inhibitor to keep insects such as ants or ticks from congregating and infesting an area. When using professional sprayers, groundskeepers should follow all regulations regarding pesticides and pesticide applications. The sprayer containers should be used for only one type of chemical and labeled accordingly. The container should also be cleaned regularly in between uses. This prevents any cross-contamination or chemical reactions which can cause safety risks and environmental hazards. When a solution is added to the sprayer, some models mark the tanks in metric measurements as well as standard gallons and pints to ensure the proper mixture.

Comfort Using professional sprayers for several hours at a time can be taxing. There are many features now available to make the user more comfortable. On backpack models, for example, the shoulder straps should have cushioned adjustable straps. Comfort grips on handles and ergonomic designs for handheld and backpack models also make the job easier.

Styles Commercial sprayers are available in two main styles, handheld or backpack. Like many types of commercial outdoor power equipment, many workers prefer to use a backpack. This evenly distributes the weight and prevents the user from getting blisters or hand cramps. Many backpacks have a support frame on the bottom that makes it easier to set down securely in an upright position when the applicator is taking a break to reload or to examine an area. For those with back problems or who have a lighter body weight, the handheld version is preferred. Handheld styles usually offer grips on the handles, which increases safety and makes it easier to maneuver the machine.

Chatbot Eugene Wins Biggest Turing Test Ever

An anonymous reader writes "Eugene Goostman, a chatbot imbued with the personality of a 13-year-old boy, won the biggest Turing test ever staged on 23 June, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Turing. Held at Bletchley Park near Milton Keynes, UK, where Turing cracked the Nazi Enigma code during World War 2, the test involved over 150 separate conversations, 30 judges, 25 hidden humans and five elite, chattering software programs. 'Thirteen years old is not too old to know everything and not too young to know nothing,' explains Eugene's creator, Vladimir Veselov."

Riva Greenberg: Why Can't Meters Tell Me My Blood Sugar?

The 72nd American Diabetes Association scientific session took place a few weeks ago.

More than 16,000 medical professionals, scientists, researchers, pharma industry representatives and some well-versed patients attended.

The exhibition hall boasted one of the largest displays of new-to-market, and coming-to-market devices, technologies and other products to make managing diabetes easier, safer and more precise.

But I, and you, are still checking our blood sugar on a glucose meter that's allowed to be anywhere within 20 percent of the laboratory standard 95 percent of the time.

What that means is when my meter says my blood sugar is 145 mg/dl (8 mmol/l) it might be -- or, given the up to plus or minus 20 percent, it might be 113 mg/dl (6.2 mmol/l) or 173 mg/dl (9.6 mmol/l), or anywhere in between.

In 2010 the FDA wrote, "Glucose meters are increasingly being used to achieve tight glycemic control despite the fact that these devices have not been approved for this use." The article goes on to say that patients at home and those in clinical settings are using glucose meters that have not been approved as safe and effective.

Nearly 26 million people have diabetes in the U.S. Nearly 80 million have pre-diabetes. While they don't all use meters, meter accuracy is not limited to a small, exceptional group. Since within 10 years most people with pre-diabetes will go on to get Type 2 diabetes, meter accuracy will grow to affect up to a third of the nation.

So while manufacturers keep adding bells and whistles to meters, and we're on the launch pad for an artificial pancreas -- where accuracy will be even more critical -- why don't I have a meter that gives me an accurate reading of my blood sugar?

Think about it: would you buy a scale that's 20 percent off? Your 145 pounds on the scale might really be 113, 127, 165 or 173 pounds, or anywhere in between. Would you drive a car whose speedometer gave the speed up to plus or minus 20 miles per hour? How useful would a watch be that was sometimes too fast and sometimes too slow and you didn't know when it was which?

Six to 10 times a day when I check my blood sugar, I'm making a decision to either eat more calories -- eating sugar if my blood sugar's too low, to bring it up -- or take more insulin if my blood sugar's too high, to bring it down. And that, my friend, can be a life-threatening action if I'm basing it on faulty numbers.

To minimize some worry, you should know that the governing body, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), states that the rate of allowable accuracy on your meter must be within 15 percent of the laboratory standard when your blood sugar is lower than 75 mg/dl. But still...

Variance Meter to Meter
Not only do we not know how off the mark our meter readings are, testing your numbers on one meter next to another will drive you mad. Different meters give you different results, almost a different range of results.

Last month at a pre-launch press meeting at Sanofi, I got an iBGStar meter. I've been using Bayer's ContourUSB meter for the last two or three years, so I immediately checked my blood sugar on both meters. For the sake of these lists being difficult to read, here are the results in the U.S. mg/dl value:

2012-06-25-firsttest.png

I checked twice more over the next day and in each case my ContourUSB showed I was 20-25 points lower than the iBGStar.

Fascinated, I wanted to check on more meters. I had a VerioIQ and Freestyle Lite meter at home and ordered a Freestyle Freedom Lite meter.

Here are my results from eight checks of my blood sugar at the same moment, same finger, using the same drop of blood. (I only checked on Freestyle Freedom Lite twice because it arrived toward the end of my testing.)

2012-06-25-Screenshot20120625at11.44.24AM.png

Here's another thing that happened when I checked, and then checked again a minute later:

2012-06-25-moretests.png

So if you check twice in a row on the same meter you won't necessarily get the same result.

I've been told the only way to know if your meter is accurate is to check your blood sugar on your meter when you're having it drawn for a lab test and compare when the lab test result comes back. I did this two weeks ago. The number on my ContourUSB was 115 mg/dl (6.3 mmol/l). The lab came back with 139 mg/dl (7.7 mmol/l).

While I titled this post "Why Can't Meters Tell Me My Blood Sugar?" I plan to do a second post on "Why Meters Can't Tell Me My Blood Sugar" if that's the case. I want to find out what is at the root of meter readings and disparities and what manufacturers are doing about it.

For now, I've been told the reason for accuracy distortion is largely the interplay between the strip and the meter. Plus a host of other variables like the calibration of the meter, dirt on the meter or strip, what's in your blood from medications you may be taking, what's on your fingers from what you last ate and environmental conditions like climate and altitude.

Here's my plea to the FDA, government, pharma and health insurance companies -- with all the new gizmos and cool designed products, which I applaud, let's also get our priorities straight. When 1 in 20 people with diabetes die from low blood sugar, why are we dragging our feet on getting our meters accurate? What are we waiting for?

So what's your experience? Have you checked on different meters?

Do you think one meter is more accurate than the others? Why?

Have you compared checking your blood sugar on your meter with the hospital standard lab draw?

Have you switched meters and then found you have to get used to new numbers?

On a personal note I want to say to those of us who live with diabetes and constantly feel we are judged by our numbers -- our health care providers judge us, our family may judge us and we judge ourselves -- we really don't know what our numbers are. Plus no matter how hard we work at keeping our blood sugar in our target range, there are other forces at work -- stress, illness, the 20 percent margin of error the FDA allows food manufacturers on food nutrition labels -- that we can't always have the numbers we'd like. Let's try to remember that each time we check our blood sugar and when we do get meter accuracy.

Toshiba Excite 13 review a bigscreened tablet with a price to match

Well, this lede pretty much wrote itself. A 13-inch tablet, seriously? Toshiba is pushing the form factor limits with the Excite 13, and while its dimensions make it stand out in a sea of 7- and 10-inch devices, that isn't necessarily what tablet buyers are looking for.

There's no shortage of skepticism about such a large slate -- "slab" seems appropriate here -- so the Toshiba Excite 13 needs to provide an exceptional experience, with a brilliant display and smooth graphics, to make 2.2 pounds seem more palatable. On paper, its specs are promising: there's a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU under the hood, a 1600 x 900 display at 138 ppi and a clean build of Android 4.0. The company already has the Excite 7.7 and Excite 10 in its arsenal, and their good performance and bright displays make for compelling tablets. But how does a 13-inch tablet that starts at $650 round out that trio? Read on for our full impressions.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603N

At 62 pages per minute, the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603N ($1,499 direct) has the fastest rated speed of any printer we?ve reviewed. And its 275,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle, as well as substantial standard and optional paper capacity, pegs it for workgroups that print massive amounts of material. In our testing, it proved its mettle, printing out our test suite in a near-record pace.

The M603N is very similar to the Editors? Choice HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M601DN ($899 direct, 4 stars)?a little faster, with a slightly higher duty cycle, and password-protected printing, but lacking an automatic duplexer and selling at a higher price.

The M603N measures 15.7 by 16.3 by 20 inches (HWD) and weighs 58 pounds. The front panel has a 4-line monochrome LCD and some basic control buttons: Home, Help, Stop, and Back, plus a 2-way rocker control with center button. To the right is a numeric keypad for entering PIN numbers for password-protected printing; below the panel is a port for a USB thumb drive.

The M603N has a standard 600-sheet paper capacity, between a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. Additional paper-handling options are available to bring the paper capacity to a maximum of 3,600 sheets. Options include a 1,500-sheet input tray ($499 direct), a 500-sheet input tray ($299), a 400-sheet custom media cassette ($229 direct), a 75-sheet envelope feeder ($249), a 500-sheet stacker ($149), a 500-sheet stapler/stacker ($249), and a 500-sheet mailbox ($399).

As the base model of HP?s M603 printers, the M603N lacks an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. A duplexer is added with the M603DN ($1,749 direct), while the M603xh ($2,399 direct) adds an additional 500-sheet paper tray plus an encrypted hard drive along with the auto-duplexer.

The M603N provides USB and Ethernet (including Gigabit), with optional WiFi. I tested it over an Ethernet connection with its driver installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603N

Printing Speed

I timed the M603N on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 14.3 pages per minute (ppm), about what we?d expect from its 62-page per minute rated speed that?s based on printing text documents without graphics or photos?our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content. That?s just short of the fastest speed for a printer we?ve tested, and a tad faster than the LaserJet M601DN?s tested speed (13.4 ppm). The OKI B730DN ($1,299 direct, 4 stars) tested at 12 ppm, while the Editors? Choice Lexmark T650N ($700 street, 4 stars) lagged them at 10 ppm.?

Output Quality

The M603DN?s output quality is fine for typical business needs. Its text was slightly below par for a laser, but still good enough for anything short of demanding desktop publishing applications that require very small fonts. Graphics were of average quality, good enough for internal business use. Its inability to differentiate between some similar shades of gray would make me hesitate to hand them to important clients, however. Photo quality was also average, good enough to print out recognizable images from files or Web pages, which is about all you can expect from a mono laser.?

The M603N has a low cost per page, at 1.2 cents. That?s a half cent less per page than the M601DN and the Lexmark T650N.

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603N lives up to its promise as a fast monochrome laser for workgroups with prodigious printing needs. It has sizzling speed, good standard and optional paper capacity, and output quality suitable for standard business needs. It?s substantially faster than the OKI B730DN and the Editors? Choice Lexmark T650N, and it edges the LaserJet M601DN in speed. It also has a higher monthly duty cycle than the T650N and M601DN, making it suitable for businesses with even higher-volume printing.

Although it has slightly lower running costs than both the M601DN and T650N, the M603N has a substantially higher sticker price, $600 higher than the M603N and $800 higher than the T650N. Businesses with truly massive printing volume and the need for speed may want to spring for the M603N.
