SRWC helps students find the beauty within - News - Daily 49er ...

As senior aerospace major Teddy Mendoza walked out from his late-afternoon workout at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, he stopped to share his favorite personal feature: his smile.

?I like to see people happy,? Mendoza said. ?If you have a good vibe about yourself, it makes others happy.?

Others joined Mendoza to share their personal favorite features at the Positive Body Image booth, which was set up on Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. The booth will run through Thursday at the same times.

Graduate student in sports management and Beach Balance employee Paul Leaf said that the table?s goal is for students to love their bodies just they way they are. Leaf said that Beach Balance promotes positive body image by using a mirror, on which students write in dry erase makers about parts of their bodies that they like the most.

The event is a collaborated effort between Beach Balance and the Tri Delta sorority, Leaf said.

During the event, the sorority will be giving out small tattoos that read, ?I am 3D,? which refers to the three elements of Beach Balance: mind, body and spirit. Beach Balance employee Jocelyn Neely said through the event, anyone who participates will also receive stress balls.

Leaf said the Positive Body Image booth is a good way to start spring break because students should be happy with who they are.

According to Leaf, another goal is to put Beach Balance's name out there because not many students know about it. Beach Balance does an event for students every month, focusing on the body, mind and spirit.

In addition to the events, the Beach Balance office offers programs and services to students, such as nutrition counseling, body fat and BMI (Body Mass Index) testing, and biofeedback.

"Beach Balance incorporates the body, mind, and spirit aspect into overall health, not just physical fitness alone," Leaf said. "We want students to embrace a positive body [image] since spring break is coming up."

Brennan Gambs, president of Tri Delta and a junior finance major, said the sorority wants everyone to realize that they are beautiful inside and out.

"We want people to learn to ignore the media and focus on the positive parts of themselves," Gambs said.

During the event, Gambs said that for the most part, students were happy to share what they like about themselves.

?People definitely need to know to get positive self-esteem,? Mendoza said. ?Everyone in my life has definitely been supportive. Knowing people around you is key.?
