For over 30 years, Amy Grant has entertained audiences with her signature blend of pop and gospel music.? In May, the Grammy-award winning singer, 52, released her first studio album in 10 years entitled, How Mercy Looks from Here, inspired in part by her recent caregiving experiences with her parents who were both diagnosed with dementia.? Grant?s mother, Gloria, died in 2011, and her father, Burton, 81, now requires round-the-clock care.

?One of the lines from the title cut of my new album talks about a brilliant mind that fades away,? Grant says. ?That song was inspired by my father who was a respected radiation oncologist.?

Today, Grant?s dad has lost much of his vocabulary and memory, and her family?s experiences have inspired Grant to urge other families to plan ahead for unexpected medical events. She recently joined forces with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to record a public service announcement encouraging other baby boomers to begin thinking about how they might pay for long-term care if their parent or spouse becomes ill.

Grant and her sisters watched as their father?s dementia progressed to the point where he was no longer able to live in an assisted-living facility; he now resides in an apartment near Grant?s home, where he receives in-home care.

Married to her second husband, country singer Vince Gill for the past 13 years, Grant, a mom to her blended family of five children who range in age from 12 to 30, never expected to find herself in the ranks of over 42 million Americans who act as caregivers for their loved ones. According a January 2013 study by the Pew Research Center that looked at social and demographic trends, nearly 47 percent of adults in their 40s and 50s care for both an aging parent and a child.

According to the U.S. government website for Medicare, 12 million older Americans will need long-term care by 2020. ?InsuranceQuotes.com recently spoke to Grant about her caregiving experiences and why she recommends having a discussion about end-of-life care before a family member becomes ill.

How did you and your sisters determine the type of care your parents wanted in the event they couldn?t make decisions for themselves?

It?s a topic that no one wants to think about, and a conversation that no family wants to have, but it?s so important. Fortunately, my father was diligent about setting up his and my mom?s finances to cover end-of-life care.

My three sisters and I also talked to my parents about where they wanted to live, and what kind of care they want to receive when they could no longer make those decisions for themselves. We made sure my parents had a power of attorney in the event they become incapacitated and couldn?t pay their bills.

(My parents) also needed advanced health directives, where they name someone to make health care decisions for them in the event they can?t do this for themselves.

Did having your dad plan ahead help to make the transition easier when your parents were diagnosed with dementia?

Yes ? thanks to my dad?s planning, my sisters and I were able to hire professional caregivers. Since we aren?t responsible for the bulk of caregiving, we can focus on spending quality time with our dad. Although he has lost much of his conversation skills, he still enjoys going for drives in the country with us.

Fortunately, the type of dementia that my parents have isn?t hereditary, but it still made me realize that life can provide unexpected moments and that you need to review your parents? and your own insurance information, long before you think you might need to do so.

For families who are thinking ahead to caregiving in later years, there are many insurance options available including purchasing an annuity (a long-term investment that is issued by an insurer to protect consumers from the risk of outliving their income), additional life insurance or long-term care insurance.

What lessons have you learned caring for your parents?

When my parents were first diagnosed with dementia, we asked, ?Why is this happening to our family?? My sisters and I have learned to reframe our experience, to not have any regrets, and to embrace this time as the last great lesson in life that we are learning from our dad.

CRAWFORD | College Football 'Book: Media Days, Charlie Strong goes home

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Latest sign that football is close: Conference Media Days, which fire up this week with the Southeastern Conference (all right, actually the Sun Belt is before that) and then proceed steadily.

As a public service, The 'Book provides you a bit of info on the various events, and a schedule.

SUN BELT (Monday, ESPN3) -- For the second straight year, the Sun Belt will get full coverage online from ESPN, including the coaches' press conferences, and interviews with coaches from the? four programs that will enter the league next season. The live look-ins begin at 1 p.m.

SOUTHEASTERN (Tuesday-Thursday, Hoover, Ala.) -- Nobody does media days quite like the SEC, with four teams per day over three days. ESPN's College GameDay will be in Birmingham for the event, and will be on the air live from 3:30 to 4 each day. Not to be outdone, WDRB will have Rick Bozich and John Lewis in attendance, two of the more than 1,100 reporters expected to attend. Kentucky coach Mark Stoops is scheduled to speak Wednesday at 8:30. Stoops is bringing defensive tackle Donte Rumph, running back Raymond Sanders and linebacker Avery Williamson with him. Steve Spurrier speaks Tuesday afternoon, so UK should have plenty of time to craft its response to whatever insult Spurrier throws out this season.

ATLANTIC COAST (July 21-22, Greensboro, N.C.) -- Coaches, administrators and media take part in a golf event the day before the media day gets under way, but the University of Louisville's new conference (next season) gets plenty of football talk in. Full coverage is available at www.theacc.com.

BIG 12 (July 22-23, Dallas) -- Only two quarterbacks have been picked to represent teams at Big 12 media days. Where have you gone, Johnny Manziel? Oh, that's right, to the SEC. THE AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (July 29-30, Newport, R.I.) -- The Catholic basketball schools are gone and the headquarters no longer is in Providence, but the AAC will still hold its football media day/clambake in Newport, because what says football more than that? The conference hasn't yet released names of athletes from the schools who will be attending. In reality, while the SEC holds its media days over three days in Alabama, The American gives you three hours in Newport. But the seafood is first-rate.

STRONG VISITS RECREATION CENTER NAMED FOR HIS FATHER

Charlie Strong was in Luxora, Ark., on Friday to attend Kids Day Festivities at the Charles Strong Recreation Center. Mississippi County proclaimed the day to be "Charles Strong Day" in honor of the longtime educator and coach's contributions.

"I'm just so happy to be back home and come back to Mississippi County and come back to a community that my father was such a big part of," Strong said, according to the Blytheville Courier News. "He was a coach and educator here. . . . It's such a special day. . . . It's just so special that I could have a mentor like that. Someone that you can follow and continue in his legacy."

Strong said that he wants his team to "feel like (it's) still the hunter" in the upcoming season. But mainly, he wanted to talk about his father.

"He was an important part of this community," Strong said. "It's so good when you come back to the community and you share the stories with a lot of people and (hear) what they have to say about him. It just makes you proud."

KENTUCKY SETS KICKOFF LUNCHEON FOR AUGUST 2

THe University of Kentucky will hold its annual Kickoff Luncheon in the Hyatt Regency Lexington's Patterson Ballroom at noon on August 2. Head coach Mark Stoops, offensive coordinator Neal Brown and defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot will speak. Fans will be able to submit questions for the program, which will be emceed by Tom Leach.

Seating is limited. Reservations for the event, at $40 per person, are available by emailing Elizabeth Briggs at elizabeth.briggs@uky.edu. Deadline is July 24.

ESPN is burning up the football-free months by looking back over last season and identifying the Top 25 football games, for broadcast on ESPNU.

While U of L's win at Rutgers probably ranks in the minds of most Cardinals' fans as the most memorable of last season (second, perhaps, to the Sugar Bowl win), ESPN ranks the best game as U of L's 34-31 win over Cincinnati.

KENTUCKY TWEETS FOOTBALL WITH THE BEST OF THEM

Emory University's Sports Marketing Analytics teams tracked Tweets about college football by state for the past six months. (Yeah, tedious, but somebody had to do it, right?)

What it found about the states who had the heaviest penetration wasn't surprising at the very top, but one so-called basketball state was right with the big boys. The school said Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee ranked 1-2-3 in its index, with South Carolina and West Virginia rounding out the top five.

But the others on that lead lap of college football Tweeting are the interest here: Arkansas and Georgia you'd expect. Nebraska you'd also expect. Idaho and Kentucky you wouldn't expect.

Give an assist to Bobby Petrino's showing back up at WKU and Mark Stoops getting the social media engine going at UK, and some credit goes to U of L's Sugar Bowl run last season.

Also give an assist to a low population -- and perhaps high unemployment.

AUBURN SID PRINTS 'GAME NOTES' FOR WEDDING

You can't tell a groomsman or bridesmaid without a program, perhaps, but at Auburn assistant SID Wes Todd's wedding, you got a bit more help than that. Todd printed up a set of "game notes" for his wedding, complete with a wedding party roster, wedding schedule and background on the union.

Give him points for creativity. Sports Information Directors regularly print up notes, facts and statistics for upcoming games (most are available to the public now, as well as media, through schools' websites).

A CALL FOR MORE SPECIFICITY IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL BOXES

Pete Roussel of coachingsearch.com wants more information. Everybody likes box scores. Baseball has gotten them down to a science, and seems to tweak them every few years so that they provide more information.

The average college football box, however, hasn't changed in a while. Roussel nominates five new stats he'd like to see in college football boxes:

1. Red zone summary: This is already provided in most extended boxes published by teams in its full postgame book.

2. Sudden change possession outcomes: Roussel calls it the first thing that former Oregon coach Chip Kelly would look at after every game.

3. Average starting field position: Again, you have to dig a bit, but this is available in most teams' final books -- in the drive chart.

4. Number of offensive snaps per team: Also available by adding the number of pass attempts with the number of run attempts.

5. Number of blocked kicks/punts: This might be useful. You already can find blocked kicks or PAT attempts. A notation for blocked punts could be of use.

Two Abba-obsessed former university friends awaken old ghosts when they holiday on Skiathos, the Greek island where the hit movie Mamma Mia! was filmed.

Frankie and Julia are old university friends who shared a love of Abba, karaoke and clothes. Now in their late thirties, their lives seem to be stuck in ruts. Julia is a housewife in Hay-on-Wye, with a doting husband and teenage son, but regrets that she has not had a career. Frankie is a reporter on her local newspaper, lives with her mother in their Blackpool boarding house, but feels that she has missed out on marriage and having a family.

When the buy each other Mamma Mia! The Movie DVDs one Christmas they decide to have the girls' holiday they planned but never took the summer they left university. They intend to have some fun, visit the film's locations and maybe sing an Abba song or two.

They spend a few idyllic days lazing on the beach and swimming in the sea. But as temperatures rise so do tensions and, despite a blossoming relationship with a tour guide, Frankie cannot shake the feeling that something is dreadfully wrong. SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) Have you ever wondered exactly how much body fat you have? The ?Bod Pod? at the Syracuse University Human Performance Laboratory can tell you after sitting in the machine for just a few short minutes.

Southern city in Egypt takes on Islamists

ASSIUT, Egypt (AP) ? The southern Egyptian city of Assiut has long been a haven for radical Islamists, and its Christian minority has largely kept a low profile. That all changed this weekend.

An estimated crowd of 50,000 packed the streets this weekend to join protests calling for President Mohammed Morsi's ouster, prompting a violent response that left three people dead.

The show of defiance can only be fairly measured in view of the city's bloody history and the shifts in the local centers of power when Morsi became president a year ago, empowering many of the hard-line Islamist groups around the country, including those in Assiut.

The bloody end of the protest ? 32 people were also injured ? points to the high risks that Assiut residents, particularly Christians, face if they were to join the wave of opposition to Morsi's rule that culminated Sunday when millions of Egyptians came out across the country to demand his ouster.

"I, my kids Mariam and Remon and my husband, Nabil, came out because we miss the Egypt we know and we want it back," Assiut resident Mary Demian said. "These people (militant Muslims) say we are infidels and they terrorize us, but we are not scared. This is our nation and we have always lived with Muslims in peace."

The size of Sunday's rally was nearly five times the demonstration that celebrated the ouster of Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. But what is equally important is that the protesters showed a level of defiance and courage that may have been unthinkable just days ago.

It defined a change of mood in a city of 1 million people where political activism has traditionally been the exclusive domain of the powerful Islamists of Gamma Islamiya, a hard-line group that fought a bloody insurgency against Mubarak's regime in the 1990s. The insurgency left more than 1,000 people dead, including foreign tourists and Christians.

The group, born in Assiut in the 1970s, has since renounced violence and set up a political party after Mubarak's ouster, joining a new political landscape dominated by Islamists. Thousands of its members were jailed under Mubarak's 29-year rule. It is now one of the strongest allies of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood.

Adding to the combustible mix, Christians in Assiut province make up about a third of its 4 million people. In all of Egypt, Christians make up about 10 percent of the estimated 90 million people.

In that context, Assiut can be a major flashpoint if the two sides decide to fight it out. Islamists across much of the country were mobilizing their supporters Monday night after the chief of the armed forces gave Morsi and his opponents 48 hours to work out their differences. If they don't, warned Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, the military will intervene with a political road map of its own for the nation's future.

In the meantime, millions of Morsi opponents are rallying for a second day in a row, filling Cairo's Tahrir Square, the thoroughfare outside Morsi's presidential palace, and elsewhere in the country.

Sunday's events in Assiut underline the city's potential as a main battlefield in the fight between the two sides.

Significantly, the anti-opposition rally was held in tandem and in close proximity to another one by Gamaa Islamiya, whose members toured the city on motorbikes chanting "Down with the saboteurs!" before they gathered near a government building only 50 yards from the opposition rally.

"Our rally was a message to everyone that we are here on the streets doing what our conscience dictates to us and that we shall not allow saboteurs to do what they wish," said Tareq Beder, the Gamaa official in charge of Assiut.

In the run-up to the opposition rally, several activists also received threatening text messages. "All of you infidels will die," said one, sent to Christian activist Joseph Amin.

The protesters burned posters of Morsi and Assem Abdel-Maged, a longtime leader of Gamaa.

"Oh Assiut, tell the terrorists that Muslims and Christians are united!" they chanted. "Down, down with Assem Abdel-Maged the terrorist!" they screamed.

Abdel-Maged, a native of Assiut, has been taking the lead in a campaign to discredit Morsi's critics, delivering fiery speeches that brand them as communists, extremist Christians and paid Mubarak loyalists.

The violence began soon after the festive rally got underway when a suspected Islamist riding behind another man on a motorbike opened fire on the crowd, killing a 21-year-old Christian man, Abanob Atef, and injuring 11. Protesters used the blood from the fatal head wound to write on the ground "Erhal!" or "Leave!" ? the chant of the Arab Spring protesters now directed at Morsi.

Enraged by the violence, many of the protesters moved to the nearby villa housing the local branch of the Freedom and Justice party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Suspected Morsi supporters in the villa opened fire on the protesters, killing two more and injuring another 21, according to security officials speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. Fighting continued with the protesters pelting the villa with firebombs and rocks. Policemen, angered by the death of one of their own, joined the fight on the side of the protesters.

The fighting continued for hours, with the police occasionally retreating because of heavy gunfire. Morsi's supporters, some wearing construction helmets and homemade body armor, shot at the protesters and police from pickup trucks and motorbikes that came in waves.

Both the Gamaa and the Muslim Brotherhood in Assiut have denied involvement in the violence.

Violence resumed Monday, with about 3,000 anti-Morsi protesters storming and torching the villa housing the Freedom and Justice party.
