House GOP sets vote on revamped debt-limit bill (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House Republicans are pressing ahead with a vote on a newly modified plan to stave off an unprecedented government default next week even though the legislation faces a White House veto threat and unanimous opposition among Senate Democrats.

But some skeptics, including conservative Republicans like Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, say Geithner can manage Treasury's cash flow to avoid a catastrophe if Congress fails to act.

House Republicans tweaked their measure Wednesday to enhance its prospects of passage after a worse-than expected cost estimate from congressional budget analysts on Tuesday. The changes were modest, but under arcane budget conventions, they brought projected savings for 2012 to $22 billion, part of a 10-year cut of $917 billion. That would trigger a $900 billion increase in the debt limit.

While the Boehner and Reid measures differed in key details, they also shared similarities that underscored the concessions made by the two sides in recent days. Reid's bill does not envision a tax increase to reduce deficits, a bow to Republicans. But neither does the House measure require passage of a constitutional balanced budget amendment for state ratification, a step in the direction of Obama and the Democrats.

For Boehner, the vote shaped up as a critical test of his ability to lead a fractious majority that includes 87 first-term lawmakers, many of them elected with tea party support. Passage also was imperative to maximize Boehner's leverage with Obama and Reid in a fast-approaching endgame.

Boehner showed fire in a meeting Wednesday with the Republican caucus.

"Get your ass in line," Boehner told the rank and file. "I can't do this job unless you're behind me."

If House conservatives torpedo the bill, any follow-up probably would require Democratic votes to pass. That, in turn, would mean smaller spending cuts than Republicans are seeking in exchange for raising the nation's $14.3 trillion debt limit.

The World in Six Songs: How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature is a fascinating book with the premise that there are six functions of song (music) in human culture.? Levitin concludes with ?Although the important functions of music can be described in these six categories, the specific ways that people from different musical cultures have found to make music are very diverse.? This book lays out a compelling case for the evolutionary (natural selective) reason that we are hard wired to be musical beings (as evidenced by neurological studies ? see Dr. Levitin?s 2007 book This is Your Brain on Music).? I found his arguments to be very persuasive and the book to be entertaining.? Although it deals with what could be a dry subject, it is well written, has many interviews with musicians (from Sting and Paul Simon to Joni Mitchell and David Byrne) and historians, anthropologists, and evolutionary biologists.? One of my favorite quotes from the book involves music of Religion:? Levitin?s friend, Rabbi Hayyim Kassorla, states ?So what if there?s a center in the brain that makes people think of God? Why wouldn?t there be? Maybe God put it there to help us to understand and communicate with him.? (196)

I highly recommend this book for insight into sociological and evolutionary reasons we are hard-wired for music.? Music is in everything we do as human beings, and this book explores how we may have gotten to be that way.? The only thing I felt lacking in the book was that the musical examples are very North American-centric.? The book is clearly written for those living in North America, with familiarity with popular culture (song selections mentioned in the book can be heard at www.sixsongs.net), and I would have really liked to have had a broader world view presented.? But, overall, I really enjoyed the book and found it thought provoking and informative.

The 21-foot long, 15-foot diameter Raffaello brought back to Earth nearly 5,700 pounds of unneeded materials from the station.

Thursday's pre-dawn landing marked an end to NASA's 30-year space shuttle program. After 135 missions ??33 flown by Atlantis and the remainder spread over the space agency's four other orbiters, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery and Endeavour ? the reusable winged spacecraft were retired. It is not often that I will recommend a book that tends to hit the Catholic Church but I?ve just finished Vishal Mangalwadi?s The Book that made your World, How the Bible Created the soul of Western Civilization and must conclude that no defender of Western Civilization should be without it.

You can find my full review at Amazon but let me briefly say that in 400 pages Mr. Mangalwadi performs a service by reacquainting the reader with the role of the Biblical worldview in not only all that is best about Western Civilization but in how our modern ?humanitarian? views would have never developed without it.

This work combined with Thomas Woods? How the Catholic Church built Western Civilization (my review here) provides the defender of Western Civilization will every tool needed to defend the Western Worldview and all the good it has done.

The Food in Korea pages are packed with information on traditional Korean food culture, recommended restaurants and recipes. Those of you who enjoy cooking should take a look at the recipes page, where you can find out how to prepare any one of the dozens of dishes and side dishes listed on the site.

The main dishes have been divided into 4 main categories :?bap (cooked rice dishes), guk (porridges), guksu (noodle soups), and mandu (dumplings). Recipes for gimbap, bibimbap and mul naengmyeon can all be found here along with recipes for lesser-known (but equally delicious) dishes.

If you?re looking for banchan (side dish) recipes, you can find dozens of them listed here.
