The Effects of Witnessing Domestic Violence on Children

?

In this TV interview, DanielKids? Dr. Vicki Waytowich speaks about the effects of witnessing domestic violence on children. The effects on these children can be both physical and emotional, immediate and long term.

The immediate effects can be anger, depression, guilt that they can?t protect a loved one, withdrawal, acting out in school, behavioral problems and even physical symptoms. As Dr. Waytowich reminds us, kids show what they learnt and what they know. For a child who grows up seeing domestic violence, violence is what they know.
In the long term, those who experience or witness abuse, often ?go on to continue the cycle of violence,? Dr. Waytowich says. Boys who witness domestic violence are 10x more likely to be abusive in their own relationships while women are more likely to tolerate abuse.

The message is simple but important: domestic abuse causes a cycle of violence that we can stop. To learn more about our public policy initiatives, click here.
