Disney's 'Brave' shows mettle with $66.7M debut

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A new Disney princess has ascended to the box-office throne with a No. 1 debut for Pixar Animation's "Brave."

The latest from the makers of "WALL-E," ''Finding Nemo" and the "Toy Story" movies opened with $66.7 million domestically, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Brave" added $13.5 million in 10 overseas markets for a worldwide start of $80.2 million.

Featuring a feisty Scottish princess, "Brave" was the first of Disney's Pixar animations with a female protagonist. And it left American hero Abraham Lincoln in the dust.

The 20th Century Fox action tale "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" opened far back at No. 3 with $16.5 million, behind "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted."

DreamWorks Animation's animated "Madagascar" sequel had been No. 1 for two weekends and added $20.2 million to raise its domestic total to $157.6 million.

"Brave" is the 13th-straight Pixar release to open at No. 1 since "Toy Story" launched Hollywood's age of computer animation in 1995.

"Their track record is just unbelievable," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "The Pixar brand just carries so much weight with the audience, it doesn't matter almost what the story is about if it has the Pixar name."

The weekend's other new wide release, Steve Carell and Keira Knightley's apocalyptic romance "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," misfired with just $3.8 million, debuting at No. 10.

The Focus Features film, playing in much narrower release than other top-10 movies, stars Carell and Knightley as heartbroken neighbors on a road trip as a killer asteroid hurtles toward Earth.

Woody Allen's Italian romance "To Rome with Love" pulled in huge audiences in limited release, debuting with $379,371 in five theaters. That gave the Sony Pictures Classics release a whopping average of $75,874 a theater, compared to $16,028 in 4,164 cinemas for "Brave."

"Brave" features a voice cast led by Kelly Macdonald and Emma Thompson in a mother-daughter story of a young Scottish princess defying tradition that requires her to marry against her will.

The film proved that audiences will turn up for a female hero, not just the male protagonists of past Pixar flicks, such as Woody and Buzz of "Toy Story," the robot of "WALL-E" or the rat and his chef buddy of "Ratatouille."

"Brave" matched the $66.1 million debut of Pixar's "Cars 2," with male automotive lead Lightning McQueen, over the same weekend a year ago.

"It is a phenomenal thing, these guys and their mastery of big storytelling and character development, delivering something that plays well to adults as well as kids, to girls as well as boys," Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution, said of Pixar.

The audience for "Brave" did lean toward females, who accounted for 57 percent of viewers. Two-thirds of the film's business came from families, who also continued to flock to "Madagascar 3," making a rare weekend when two PG-rated movies led the box office.

The R-rated "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" was a clever idea ? the 16th U.S. president waging his own civil war against the blood-suckers of the republic. But critics were unimpressed, and action fans had only a passing interest in the movie, which featured relative unknown Benjamin Walker as Lincoln.

Still, it was made for $69 million, a modest budget for a summer action movie, and 20th Century Fox had hopes it would hold up well over the next week or so before "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises" swoop in to take over cinemas in July.

"It's actually a good start for this movie," said Chris Aronson, the studio's head of distribution. "This is an interesting and untested genre that I think audiences are going to continue to seek out. Mash-ups have been done, but the historical mash-up has not been done."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Timbers shut out in 1-0 loss at Galaxy

CARSON, Calif. (AP) -- Goalkeeper Josh Saunders made a triumphant return to the starting lineup making four saves and earning a shutout following a seven-game absence to help the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the Portland Timbers 1-0 on Sunday night.

The victory snapped a seven-game winless streak for the Galaxy in MLS play.

In what was his first league match since April after returning from the league's substance abuse and behavior health program, Saunders made a number of key saves -- including one with his face -- to give Los Angeles its first shutout of the season. But even though the 31-year-old goalkeeper admitted that the game was "special" he approached the match like any other.

"It felt great, we battled through the game," said Saunders "We just kept believing that we're going to start winning some games, we battled, we had some struggles early on and we were able to pull through it and I can't say enough about what the guys did on the field."

The match was a back and forth affair from the start as both teams traded chances in the first 10 minutes. The first came in the second minute when a Marcelo Sarvas header was stopped by the face of Portland goalkeeper Troy Perkins before Saunders made a stop of his own with his face to prevent a Kris Boyd shot from going into the back of the net.

Saunders' defining moment came in the 26th minute when the goalkeeper was called into action, making a diving stop on Boyd's rocket shot from 35-yards out. With Saunders holding the shutout, the Galaxy were able to find the winning goal in the 61st minute when a David Beckham corner kick found Todd Dunivant far post. The defender then calmly nodded a header past Perkins for the game's only goal.

"David obviously serves in an incredible set piece. He put the ball in the back post. We kind of had talked about it halftime. We'd had a few to the front post and I said to try the back post. I found a little space back there and was able to nod it home."

However, while the Galaxy were pleased with their performance against Portland, Timbers head coach John Spencer was infuriated with his sides' inability to finish their chances as they slid into the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

"We need to start picking up points; we know that, we ain't dumb. We lost too many games, clicking by and saying, `we should of or could of done this or could have gotten a decision,"' said Spencer. "I'm sick and tired of hearing the word potential; to be honest with you if I hear it once more then I'm probably going to throw up.

"For me, potential gets you your contract, it gets you on the field then you've got to produce. We've got too many guys right now, not playing and not producing to the best of their abilities."

While Portland is struggling heading into their Cascadia Cup match-up against the Seattle Sounders next Sunday, the Galaxy hope the victory over the Timbers will provide a lift as they face Real Salt Lake on Wednesday.

"We just have to build on it, simple as that," said Beckham. "Last season we played a lot of games like this where we won 1-nil and we kept the other teams in shutouts. We need more performances like this and were capable of it, so hopefully this will be our springboard."

According to U.N. sources, one billion women are survivors of sexual assault. One billion women in a world of seven billion people -- that is a massive shared experience of being overpowered, humiliated, demeaned, undermined, betrayed, confused and violated.

How do we deal with this violence? We go to support groups, therapy sessions, political rallies; we write letters and laws; give speeches; create and staff hotlines, clinics, shelters, and organizations. We are busy.

How else can we deal with this violence? In her newest book, I Am an Emotional Creature, Eve Ensler claims space for emotions as moral compass, for intuition as a means of analysis, and for connecting to other people as a political act. She makes way for -- and celebrates -- the resilience, strength and learning that we can render from fighting violence. We can use emotions to transform pain into power.

In downtown Berkeley, California this Sunday evening on June 24th, a diverse group of women and girls will step up to this vision and attempt to create something completely new -- a public, participatory ritual that commemorates the rage and grief caused by gender violence and acclaims the power of women and girls to reshape the world.

Participants include Eve Ensler, Sistahs of the Drum, Gina Breedlove, Dance Brigade's Grrrl Brigade and many other ritualists, performers, activists and artists. This event will be the pre-launch of One Billion Rising, a global strike against gender violence, planned to begin on February 14, 2014.

Sunday's event -- Bay Area Rising -- will be a community ritual that draws from spiritual traditions from around the world. We'll sing, dance, drum, chant, speak, write, and will this new world without violence into existence. We'll express our rage and reaffirm our resilience; we'll feel our grief and cultivate our vision; we'll meet our neighbors and recreate ourselves as a community infused with love.

Inspired by the Occupy movement, we're reclaiming public space and filling it with the values that we hold most dearly.

Our problems and our social movements are global. But are solutions are always local. They lie in connecting to each other, in committing to protecting a neighbor's safety and a sister's creativity, in affirming that life of a woman I haven't yet met is as precious as my own.

Healing from trauma -- individual healing, collective healing -- is a source of political transformation. That when we heal, we become unstoppable agents of change. We rise up, together.

Scientific Arabian: Revolutions Then and Now

Walking through streets of Cairo, I?ve rarely heard talk of the unchecked pollution coughed from vehicles exhaust pipes, or of speculation of how many homes could be powered if only the vast deserts surrounding the city planted with solar farms, or of aspirations of sending the first Egyptian to space. No, the primary topics of conversation in the ubiquitous taxi cabs, hookah shops, and the neo-classically styled salons of private homes hasn?t changed in the thirty years I?ve been visiting my birth country ? politics, religion and the next meal. To hear talk of science, one needs to press ear to stone.

Not any stone will do. The rock must be old, hewn from millennia-old quarries to lay the foundation of institutes like Baghdad?s House of Wisdom and Cairo?s House of Knowledge, cornerstones of a golden age of Arab civilization spanning four centuries and reaching from Spain to Persia. If these stones could talk, they?d speak of revolution ? not the one sweeping through the Middle East today ? but of an intellectual revolution seeded by Greek knowledge and watered by a thirst for an empirical understanding of the world God (in the creationist view of the time) created.

Perhaps the stones would speak of engineers like al-Jazari, who pioneered the camshaft and practical application of automata, or of ibn Sina (Avicenna to the West), whose masterpiece laid the foundation of modern medicine. If we use our eyes and not our ears, perhaps we?d catch a glimpse of ibn al-Haytham, the father of optics and pioneer of the modern scientific method.

The spirit of the pursuit of knowledge would flee the Arab world, escaping the destruction of Baghdad?s House of Wisdom at the hands of Mongol invaders, but it would survive in the West. Just as Greek knowledge provided the foundation of an Arab scientific revolution, so too would Arab knowledge transferred to Europe lay the groundwork for the Renaissance in which the language of Arab science ? al-jebr, kimiya, al-khwarizmi ? would become Latinized to algebra, chemistry, and algorithm.

Today, many critics of Arab society rightfully ask, ?what have you done for me lately?? Where are the polymaths, the inventors, the free thinkers of the Arab world? Decades of occupation followed by stifling dictatorships drove many scientists and engineers (including my own father) to Western institutions where they would have the resources to pursue their research. Now it is the Arabic that borrows from English to describe technological advances such as the radio, television, and computers.

There are signs that scientific revolution is following on the heels of political change, the millennia-long dark age is lifting, and the ?baton of enlightenment? is being shared, if not passed, to the Arab world. In Egypt, Dr. Ahmed Zewail?s vision of a science city in Egypt is being realized after over a decade of stagnation, and in Saudi Arabia, an oil-rich monarch is once again investing in science in the tradition of Caliphates of the Arab Golden Age. In the series, ?Scientific Arabian,? we?ll take a closer look at the reemergence of science in the Arab world, and the influence the West and the Arab Spring are having upon it.
