The credit counseling session is meant to involve a thorough examination of the debtor?s complete financial life. The credit counselor is supposed to provide the debtor with some alternatives to bankruptcy and also give the debtor an opportunity to learn how to develop a better personal budgeting system. If the debtor cannot afford the counseling session, the credit counseling organization is required to offer the counseling free of charge. The debtor is responsible for telling the organization that he or she cannot afford to pay the fee before the session begins and will then receive a fee waiver from the organization. If the debtor is able to pay for the session, the charge could be as much as $50 dollars.

We?ve had an extraordinary amount of tragedy in our family (long story) resulting in my putting my Moms savings into a safe deposit box where it ended up being stolen. (it does happen)We are using my MOms monthly checks totally to pay off credit card debt and mine as well. I try to work with these companies but the debt increaes every year to the point we don?t have enough money to eat. (we get 200.00 for food ea month but its not enough. I refuse to stop paynig my debt or go bakrupt so ea month I pay the bills before anything. I have parrots and a dog that I care for and would sooner die than give them up. I am multiply handicapped and my Mom is 87. I am petrified of what is going to happen when she dies let alone in a month or so as with whatever help credit cards have offered and choosing house and car insurance at the lowest rates. On SSI I am not able to take in renters or have more than 2000.00 in assets of which I have none; am unable to save. We don?t have enough money to buy fruits, vegatables, etc. ea one costs practically a dollar each. We et chicken every single night. If my credit cards were taken away I would not be able to buy certain necessities that we must hve once in a while or pay for repairs. Our house is in bad need of repair too. I dont think anyone can help us at this point so your article is right. How could I pay a fee when my health insurance is no longer paying for vital medications for me? I feel totally helpless in this sitution and would give anything if I could find a reputable job at home. Believe me I have been trying. My health is worsening all the time. (I have several medical degrees and avian cert as well, and am not a lazy person on teh govt payroll)

How Haile Selassie's unique lions got their mane

You'd expect the lions of the Lion of Judah to be pretty special. Just like their late master, Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie, these top cats have a unique lineage. And like Selassie's Rastafarian followers, they have an distinctive long, dark mane.

The lions were part of the personal collection of Selassie, the last emperor of Ethiopia, who died in 1975. Seven lions were captured in 1948, possibly in south-western Ethiopia, and taken to the new zoo in the capital, Addis Ababa. Now their descendants number 20.

Susann Bruche of Imperial College London and her colleagues say these are the last living lions to have their distinctive mane, which covers the head, neck, chest and belly. Their smaller, skinnier bodies also mark them out from other lions, and their DNA suggests they are a genetically distinct population.

The team are now concerned with conservation. Lion populations are declining in Ethiopia, and the Addis Ababa lions are known to exist in only two other regions, one of them being an elephant sanctuary. They're at risk from hunters, especially because of their unique manes.

"A great amount of genetic diversity in lions has most likely already been lost, largely due to human influences," said Bruche. "Every effort should be made to preserve as much of the lion's genetic heritage as possible."

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ? A man renting an apartment in a Victorian house in Connecticut was poking around the basement when he was surprised to find some fine clothes stuffed in a trash bag. A tailor's tag listing the client's name on one of the suits startled him even more.

"Paul Newman. January 1986."

Peter Gamlen, a 23-year-old British illustrator, said he believes the suit belonged to the late actor, director, entrepreneur and racing driver. The suit was by the tailor Henry Stewart. So, Gamlen researched Stewart and found an obituary in the New York Times from 1993 that listed Newman among the tailor's clients.

Gamlen said he began to holler and run around when he made the discovery.

"Guess where my legs are!," he said to a friend. "They're in Paul Newman's trousers!"

Gamlen described the suit as a two-piece lounge suit with surgeon's cuffs.

"This is incredibly well made," said Gamlen, who said he was surprised at how well the suit fit. "The whole cut of this is absolutely beautiful."

Gamlen, who was given permission to sift through previous tenants' belongings in New Haven, said he also found a photo of Newman in the pocket of a sports jacket. The actor was sporting sunglasses and standing with three other men.

Newman, who died in 2008, lived in Westport, about 30 miles from New Haven.

Gamlen, who came to the United States for work about a year ago and works in a clothing store, said he believes, at the very least, the suit with the tailor's tag belonged to Newman.

Gamlen said he loves fine clothing and "The Hustler" starring Newman is one of his favorite films.

"It's certainly valuable to me in terms of being like an amazing coincidence and also a really beautiful set of clothes that look pretty damn good on me," he said.

Gamlen said he's not sure what he's going to do with the suit.

Kay Hill, who owns the building, said she has no idea how Newman's clothes could wind up in the basement, though she noted she's had notable tenants over the years such as professors and authors.

"It sounds like it really could have been Paul Newman's suit," Hill said.

She said her parents, who once lived in the building, met Newman at a Democratic fundraiser decades ago, and her late father in law once played tennis with Newman.

"They wouldn't have anything to do with the suit," she said.

A.E..Hotchner, Newman's longtime friend, said he could not imagine how Newman's clothes would wind up in New Haven though he didn't rule it out.

And especially fancy suits.

"Paul was notoriously underdressed," Hotchner said. "As far as I remember he had one black sports coat and he had one suit."

The down-to-earth actor who liked to race cars also had a tuxedo, but he burned it so he'd have an excuse not to attend any more black tie events, Hotchner said.

"Paul really didn't want anything to do with any kind of dressing up," Hotchner said. "He certainly wouldn't have left any clothes in a building in New Haven."

Newman's daughter, Nell, also said she's not sure why her father would have old clothes sitting around in New Haven, though she noted he briefly attended Yale University in the city.

Janet Jackson's attorney sent a scathing letter to Vanity Fair demanding a retraction of an article in the November 2012 issue.?

The magazine article, which is an excerpt from Randall Sullivan's upcoming book, "Untouchable: The Strange Life and Tragic Death of Michael Jackson," claims Janet, 46, delayed her brother Michael Jackson's funeral until she was reimbursed for her $40,000 deposit to secure his plot.

Janet's attorney, Blair G. Brown, addressed a legal letter to Vanity Fair's Editor-in-Chief Graydon Carter saying the story is "false and defamatory."

"Ms. Jackson never delayed the funeral in anyway," Brown wrote in the letter dated Oct. 5, obtained by Us Weekly. "In fact, she paid for the funeral and was reimbursed for some of those expenses by Michael Jackson's estate in the year after the services took place."?

"In addition, there were other private costs associated with Michael Jackson's passing that Ms. Jackson incurred and for which she has never sought reimbursement," he added. "To falsely accuse Ms. Jackson of holding up her brother's funeral over money is outrageous. This story is particularly hurtful and distressing because of Ms. Jackson's strong desire to serve her brother, whom she loved dearly, and he wish to stand with and support her family."

The King of Pop was laid to rest on Sept. 3, 2009 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, more than two months after his death.?

"I demand that Vanity Fair retract its statement that Ms. Jackson 'refused' to let Michael Jackson's funeral take place until the money she put down as a deposition on his burial plot was repaid," Brown wrote. "To the extend that this statement appears in excerpts of Untouchable published in Vanity Fair?s November 2012 issue, I demand that Vanity Fair publish a retraction explaining that the statement is false."

Another list of negotiation 'how-tos' misses the mark ? Part 1

This piece titled ?Beasely: 5 concepts for better negotiating? offers advice on how you can become better at that pre-eminent of life skills ? negotiating agreements. Though one can detect the misconception surrounding the meaning and use of the word ?negotiation? and its role and place in sales and business, its presence is not very pronounced in the article I?m referring to. (For those who are interested, I wrote about this misconception here, here and here). The author of the piece gives specific advice regarding the ?how-to? of negotiating a deal/sale/agreement. That is what I will devote my attention to, in this piece.

As I have stated previously, sales professionals use the word ?negotiation? to refer to

(i) A deal/sale/agreement in the aggregate, or

(ii) To describe the so called negotiating dance involving bargaining about price, warranties, discounts, and the myriad terms and conditions associated with each deal. Especially price.

Negotiation trainers on the other hand use it to refer to

(i) A deal/agreement in the aggregate, or

(ii) The effort to influence each and every decision enroute to the final sale.

The author uses the word ?negotiation? in both senses in which sales professionals generally use the term.

(At CNI, we teach that you are involved in a negotiation whenever and in whichever situation you require a decision from another person provided you also respect the right of that individual to make the decision ?No, I don?t agree to your idea/request/suggestion/proposal etc.? Thus every decision you require, enroute to the final agreement, will possible involve a negotiation.)

In my opinion, the author of the piece misses the mark on many counts.

Under his first point ?Opening the door?, he writes

?When a buyer makes a price demand, you should brush it off. Don?t immediately engage in a negotiation. Doing so indicates that there is room to negotiate, thus opening the door to a whittling of your profit margin.

When a buyer suggests a discount, don?t run to their rescue by asking them what you need to do to win the deal. Buyers are often just checking to see if your position is firm to make sure they aren?t leaving any easy money on the table.?

Now, I wouldn?t advice any sales professional or business person to rush and give a discount simply because you are asked, threatened, cajoled, or sweet-mouthed to do so. People who do so or who believe that is how business is done or ought to be done should either learn to negotiate or quit the business world. If they continue, they will cause their organizations to bleed valuable profits and resources. In contrast to the author?s advice, mine is ?Go ahead and start negotiating, immediately.?

What do I mean by that? I mean go ahead and discover the vision behind that request. It might very well be that the other person, as this author rightly alludes, is looking for ?easy money?. You just don?t know and cannot and should not assume. It might or might not be a legitimate demand. There might be a legitimate vision or there might be a desire to ?test? you, from the outset. Don?t assume that it is a legitimate or illegitimate request. You must find out, patiently and carefully.

Whenever you are trying to discover the vision behind a request, or the vision that brought the other party to the negotiating table, you are already negotiating. A large part of negotiation is spent discovering and building vision. The vision I refer to is the mental picture behind the other person?s request or demand. In my opinion, the master negotiator is able to discover and build two sets of vision ? the vision the other person has and the vision the person ought to have to make the decision to accept your idea, proposal, product, suggestion or request.

The master negotiator does not negotiate blindly. If he or she is unaware of the vision driving the other person, that negotiator is negotiating blindly. The best negotiators calmly, slowly, and decisively seek to discover and build a clear vision that will in turn drive each decision in a negotiation, and move the negotiation forward. Such negotiators allow nothing ? least of all assumptions and expectations ? to come between them and the vision they seek to discover or build. They understand that vision discovery and building are often so intimately intertwined that it may even be impossible to know whether a question, problem statement, use of a particular word, or silence is aimed at discovering vision, building vision, or both.

Remember that when you attempt to discover and build vision, you will very likely encounter the voice of reason, the pull of emotion, the distractions of imagination, physical tiredness, the opinions and judgments of those away from the table, and so much more. Those are not necessarily obstacles to a stable, profitable, and ethical agreement. You must deal with them as they appear.

You must realize when you are negotiating, and you must learn how to do it well. It starts long before the door is opened and may never come to an end. It might start in the elevator, at a meeting or conference, in an online forum, via the telephone or email, or as a result of an introduction through a mutual acquaintance, just to name a few possible scenarios. It will continue for as long as you interact with each other and with third parties who are influenced or impacted in one way or another as a result of your interaction.

Feds paid $40M to firms tied to McCaskill's spouse

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Businesses affiliated with the husband of Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill have received almost $40 million in federal subsidies for low-income housing developments during her first five years in office, though it appears only fraction of that has made it to the family's bank accounts, according to an Associated Press analysis.

McCaskill's Republican challenger, Rep. Todd Akin, says the federal payments should be a cause for concern among voters. He's attempting to portray the Democratic senator's family as a prime beneficiary of government largesse.

"There is a conflict of interest and a breach of trust with the citizens of our state," Akin said in an interview with the AP.

McCaskill campaign spokesman Caitlin Legacki called such assertions "flat-out wrong."

There is no evidence that McCaskill personally routed the money to her husband's businesses. But she voted for some ? and against other ? bills that funded the federal housing and agriculture departments, which in turn provide subsidies to businesses with federal contracts to provide low-income housing.

The AP reviewed five years' worth of federal personal financial disclosure statements filed by McCaskill, which list more than 300 "affordable housing" businesses in which her husband, Joseph Shepard, had at least a partial ownership during the time she has been in office. At least one-third of those businesses also appear to be listed as recipients of federal payments in an online government database that tracks spending.

The firms affiliated with Shepard appear to have received about $39 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Housing Service or the Department of Housing and Urban Development between 2007 ? when McCaskill took office ? and the end of 2011. According to McCaskill's financial reports, Shepard earned an income of between about $400,000 and $2.6 million from those businesses in the years in which they received government payments.

McCaskill's campaign declined to make the senator available for an interview about the federal payments and ? except for Legacki's brief statement that Akin's assertion was wrong ? also declined to let campaign staff participate in an on-the-record interview. But the campaign offered a variety of reasons why the payments pose no conflict of interest, including the fact that McCaskill opposed some of the funding bills and that those she supported also included appropriations for a wide variety of government programs.

The campaign said the vast majority of the housing subsidy contracts were initiated before McCaskill became a senator, although Shepard invested in some of them after she was elected and others were renewed during her term in office. The subsidies are intended to cover the gap between the rent paid by the tenant and the value of the housing unit as determined by the federal government. Consequently, much of the subsidy goes to the owners' operating costs, such as mortgage payments or facility maintenance, the campaign said. Were Congress to not fund the subsidies, the federal government would be defaulting on its obligations, the campaign said.

Akin said McCaskill could have abstained from voting on bills that funded agencies involved in low-income housing developments.

But McCaskill then could have been open to accusations that she shunned her congressional duties ? an assertion she has made against Akin for missing numerous House votes during his Senate campaign.

"She has to vote for or against appropriation bills ? that's what the citizens of Missouri hire her to do," said George Connor, head of the political science department at Missouri State University. But he added: "It seems to me that she has influence over federal policy that has directly benefited her husband."

"There certainly is a legitimate perception of a conflict of interest, but that's not the same thing as saying there is one," Connor said.

McCaskill's campaign said her position is no different than that of lawmakers who are farmers and vote for agriculture bills that include farm aid, or lawmakers who have family members in the military and vote for bills authorizing defense spending. Her campaign suggested it was a greater conflict for Akin to have supported a federal spending earmark for a highway near his suburban St. Louis home ? though Akin's family received no money to construct it.

McCaskill ranks as one of the wealthiest members in Congress, largely because of her husband's business success, which was already well-established when she married Shepard in 2002. Her political opponents have long sought to make an issue of their finances.

In the 2004 gubernatorial primary, Democratic Gov. Bob Holden aired an ad accusing Shepard of running dangerous nursing homes that helped finance McCaskill's campaign. In the 2006 Senate race, Republican Sen. Jim Talent ran an ad accusing Shepard and McCaskill of using an insurance company based in the Bahamas as a tax shelter, which they denied. Last week, Akin began running an ad criticizing about $1 million in housing subsidies financed through the 2009 stimulus act that went to businesses affiliated with Shepard.

Although Akin is just now ramping up his assertions of a conflict of interest, Republican operatives had long planned that as part of their campaign theme against McCaskill. A consulting firm run by former Missouri Republican Party executive director John Hancock built a file on McCaskill's finances that has been shared in part with the state GOP. Hancock had been a campaign adviser to Republican Senate candidate John Brunner, who finished second to Akin in the Aug. 7 primary.

Akin has campaigned as an opponent of what he describes as an expansive federal government. He said the federal payments to businesses in which McCaskill's husband has an ownership stake shows McCaskill has "a personal interest in big government ? something that benefits herself and her husband."

Obama raises California cash for race's last month

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Fresh off his strongest fundraising month this year, President Barack Obama is looking to raise millions of dollars from celebrities and wealthy donors in California with just one month left in a tightening race.

The two-day swing through the solidly Democratic state highlights the critical role that fundraising will play in the campaign's final weeks as Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, escalate their barrage of television ads in competitive states like Ohio. The president is to return there Tuesday.

Romney, campaigning in up-for-grabs Florida, sought to build on the momentum from a debate performance last week that even Democrats conceded was "masterful." The Republican told a crowd of about 12,000 in Port St. Lucie that he had enjoyed himself, ticking off a list of Obama shortcomings he said he had exposed during the first debate.

"Now of course, days later, we're hearing his excuses," Romney said. "And next January we'll be watching him leave the White House for the last time."

As Romney finished speaking spoke, someone in the crowd of supporters behind him held up a giant Israeli flag alongside smaller American flags, underscoring the amplified role that foreign affairs and the Middle East is playing as the presidential race draws to a close. Romney on Monday plans a major foreign policy address at the Virginia Military Institute, intended to throw Obama back on his heels over his handling of unrest in Libya and elsewhere.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki, dismissing what she called Romney's fourth or fifth attempt to explain his global intentions, said the bar is high for Romney to convince voters he's prepared to be commander in chief.

"We are not going to be lectured by someone who's been an unmitigated disaster on foreign policy every time he sticks his toe in the foreign policy waters," Psaki said aboard Air Force One as Obama made his way to California.

Even as Romney sought to reap further rewards from his debate performance, a string of good news for the president threatened to steal the former Massachusetts governor's spotlight.

A jobs report Friday showing unemployment at the lowest levels of Obama's presidency was quickly followed Saturday by a fundraising report showing Obama and Democrats had raised $181 million in September. It was their best fundraising month of the campaign, but fell short of their record $190 million raised in September 2008 as the president campaigned for his first term.

Romney's campaign has not released its report for the month, and Republicans sought to downplay Obama's financial advantage. The party's national chairman, Reince Priebus, said he had been counting all along on being outraised by Obama and Democrats.

"This isn't going to come down to money. This is going to come down to heart," Priebus said. "We'll beat them on the ground, and we'll have all the money we need to be competitive."

After trailing Romney in the money race for most of the summer, Obama is back on top and pulling out all the stops to keep it that way. In what will be his final fundraising trip out West this election, Obama is enlisting his celebrity pals ? from actors to singers to chefs ? to donate to his campaign and encourage their fans to do the same.

In one event alone, a late-night soiree high above the Los Angeles skyline, Obama expected to rake in $3.75 million. Wolfgang Puck's WP24 in the Ritz-Carlton hotel will host the $25,000-per-person event for about 150 supporters.

Former President Bill Clinton was to join Obama earlier Sunday for a more intimate gathering with elite, longtime donors at the home of entertainment mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg. Then on to the main event: A star-studded concert at the Nokia Theatre with entertainment by actor George Clooney and musical guests Stevie Wonder, Jon Bon Jovi and Katy Perry.

As Obama played for California cash, his surrogates took to the talk shows to pound the theme that Romney's success in last week's debate was propped up entirely by dishonesty.

The president "was a little taken aback at the brazenness with which Gov. Romney walked away from so many of the positions on which he's run, walked away from his record," said David Axelrod, a top Obama strategist. "That's something we're going to have to make an adjustment for in these subsequent debates."

At the same time, Ann Romney was working to soften her husband's image, a frequent refrain as Romney's campaign seeks to broaden his support among centrist voters in the race's final weeks. Introducing her husband on Sunday, Mrs. Romney called him "a good and decent person" who had helped others throughout his life.

"Now we're going to get a chance for him to really care for others, because we're going to have the chance to see him get people back to work again," she said.

Both campaigns were prepping their running mates for Thursday's vice presidential debate ? and working to keep expectations low lest their candidate underperform.

On Sunday Priebus called Vice President Joe Biden "a gifted orator," while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., who challenged Romney in the GOP primary, suggested Paul Ryan would hold back on any hostility out of respect for Biden's status as a senior statesman.

While in California, the only official presidential business for Obama comes Monday in Keene, Calif., where he will designate as a national monument the home of Latino leader Cesar Chavez, the founder of the United Farmworkers Union who died in 1993.

Yet even that move has political overtones, resonating with some Hispanic voters ? a crucial bloc in Obama's 2008 coalition and a critical component of his 2012 plan to keep Romney at bay.

Priebus spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Axelrod spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation" and Gingrich on NBC's "Meet the Press."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? A week after her annual steroid shot for back pain, Janet Russell began getting unbearable headaches. A fever followed. Doctors admitted her to the hospital, but couldn't say what was wrong.

"She is screaming and nothing is helping. They have already given her medication, but nothing is helping," said Russell's daughter, Tracy Barreiro. "It continually escalated."

Unexplained pain and confusion about its cause are troubling patients like the 71-year-old Russell, diagnosed with a deadly fungal meningitis likely contracted from a custom-made steroid shot, and medical professionals who have little experience treating the rare disease.

Russell's husband, Robert, said his wife's doctor told him early on, "'You can call it meningitis, you can call it anything you want to, but quite frankly, nobody, not anybody in this country, knows what it is at this point because we have never seen it.'"

"They didn't really tell us it was a fungal meningitis until the CDC told them," he said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said as of Friday, five people have died in the outbreak, and have reported 47 cases in seven states. Investigators have focused on a steroid custom-made by a specialty Massachusetts pharmacy, as the source.

At least 29 cases are in Tennessee, and three people there have died, including the founder of an inner-city Christian center for at-risk children in Nashville.

State health officials trying to contain the outbreak are contacting about 1,000 patients who received epidural steroid injections at three clinics between July 1 and Sept. 28.

Russell was one of them, her family said, receiving her last back pain shot Aug. 30 from the Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurology Center, which got 2,000 vials of the injectable steroid from the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass.

The suburban Nashville woman is hospitalized in intensive care, can only say a few words and has trouble keeping down even water. She suffered a brain hemorrhage last week, family said.

She first started to have headaches and neck pain a week after the last injection, family said. No one thought it was related to the injections. "Never in your wildest dreams do you think it's related to that," Barreiro said.

She went to the hospital emergency room on Sept. 7, but was sent home with pain medication and a diagnosis of flu-like symptoms. Three days later, she returned to the hospital; the pain got worse.

"Her headache progressed to the point of unbearable," said Teresa Russell, another daughter. "We were all frantic at that point, to get her some kind of relief. ... Every day we were asking doctor after doctor, 'What is this and what are we going to do?'"

Doctors first suspected bacterial meningitis, requiring her family to wear protective clothing when they visited her, Robert Russell said.

"It's something that we have never had to deal with and it's something that a lot of people don't know anything about, including myself," Russell said.

Saint Thomas Hospital, where Russell's family said she is being treated, declined to release information about individual patients, citing medical privacy laws. The neurology center voluntarily closed last month because of the investigation and isn't commenting.

A third fungal meningitis patient died in Tennessee on Wednesday at the same hospital, according to the facility's chief of medicine, Dr. Robert Latham. The patient was identified as Diana Reed by a family lawyer. The attorney, Bill Lassiter, wouldn't discuss when the 56-year-old woman became ill or when she received steroid injections.

Reed had helped to found the Wayne Reed Christian Child Care Center in Nashville, which works with children who are educationally and developmentally at risk, said Reed's pastor, Josh Graves. He wouldn't comment on her illness.
