Watercolors, Acrylics & Oils at Kentlands Mansion

?Watercolors, Acrylics and Oils,? a display of works by Nighat Ahmed, Sue Kay, Mary Lou Shields and Callie Lebo, is on display at the Kentlands Mansion, 320 Kentlands Square Road, now through Nov. 25.

Ahmed is a freelance artist and designer inspired to visualize and create her artwork from the community in which she lives and from natural surroundings. Ahmed graduated from the Punjab University, Pakistan, in 1976 with a master?s in fine arts. Over the years she has experimented with different media, including watercolors, oils, pencils, acrylics, pastels, and sculpture. She uses computer graphics intensively in her greeting card series, incorporating both computer and hand-drawn graphics into her work.

Shields? interest in art began with viewing the paintings in her grandmother?s house, having a paintbrush put in her hand at 5 years old and being told, ?You can do that.? Her love of art has never diminished. Traveling is very much a part of her life, and the paintbrushes always go along. Her work has received awards in numerous juried shows, including first place awards in the Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association annual show.

Lebo calls this exhibit ?Journeys? because her paintings are inspired by her travels. Her paintings are a testament to a lifelong exploration of the landscape, the beauty of the places she has visited and the stories within. Lebo discovered her love for watercolor painting while studying with Oregon watercolorist Jim Ponti. She later received a bachelor?s in fine art from Whitman College. Lebo currently teaches art at the Norwood School in Bethesda and also teaches summer workshops for children and teens at the Arts Barn.

Kay is an artist and art teacher in Derwood, Md., whose work is inspired by the natural beauty of her native Maine and adopted home, Maryland. Kay usually shoots a photo reference and then produces her art in her bright, airy Derwood studio. ?As I paint, I try to capture something special about a place,? she says. When she?s not painting, she teaches art at the Arts Barn and in her home studio.

For viewing times (by appointment only), please call Kentlands Mansion at 301.258.6425. For more information on the exhibit, please contact Andi Rosati at 301.258.6394 or arosati@gaithersburgmd.gov, or visit us online at www.gaithersburgmd.gov/kentlandsmansion.
