WILSONVILLE ? Skateboarders will invade Wilsonville on Tuesday.
Wilsonville Parks and Recreation is celebrating International Go Skateboarding Day with skate park tours and a free barbecue featuring music, games, vendors, demonstrations and give-aways.
The International Association of Skateboard Companies started the unofficial holiday nine years ago in skateboarding's unofficial capital, southern California. The name for the holiday possibly originated from the "No Skateboarding" signs which often has been changed to "Go Skateboarding" by local skaters.
The day in Wilsonville will begin with a tour of skate parks in Tigard, McMinnville, Newberg and Donald -- where skaters can perform a fakie; an ollie and a nollie; an FS 540 and 360 Flip; a McTwist; a noseslide and nosegrind; and laser, hard, varial kick, and heel flips. The shuttle for grades six through 12 will depart at 9 a.m. from and return at 5 p.m. to the Wilsonville Community Center, 7965 S.W. Wilsonville Road. The cost is $30. Skaters are encouraged to bring a lunch and plenty of water. To register, visit www.ci.wilsonville.or.us
Afterward, skaters and wannabes of all ages are invited to a free party at Memorial City Park. The event will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the above-ground skate park at 8100 S.W. Wilsonville Road. A professional skate coach will also give a group lesson from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for $10.

OREGON CITY
Around-the-track walks, overnight camping, activities, entertainment, vendors, and luminaries will highlight the Oregon City Relay for Life Saturday and Sunday at Clackamas Community College. The annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will be held from 9 a.m. June 25 to 9 a.m. June 26 outdoors at 19600 S. Molalla Ave.
Admission is free, but as a participant you are asked to raise a minimum of $100 through individual, team, or online fundraising. Oregon City teams raised $78,949.26 at last year's relay.
The focus of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life is to celebrate cancer survivors, to remember loved ones who have lost the battle, and to fight back against the disease.
The annual event began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Wash., ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Since then, an estimated 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities nationwide, as well as in communities in 19 other countries, have participated annually. Teams of people camp out at schools, parks and fairgrounds and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the 24-hour event "because cancer never sleeps."
Ofelia McMenamy, a four-year relay veteran, said the Oregon City Commissioners and Oregon City Mayor Doug Neeley plan to declare June 19-26 as "Relay for Life Week in Oregon City" at tonight's executive session meeting at city hall.
